The Modern-Day Heroes on Two Wheels

Frontliner Honda

Tanauan, Batangas—August ,30 2020
— Who says that only heroes with capes are superheroes? And who could imagine that every day, we can see heroes around us? And who would think that this pandemic will turn the negative into something good and positive?

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the country’s economy into a complete halt, affecting the lives of Filipinos. However, it is during these trying times that hero within us tend to show.

Lockdowns and quarantines in the country may have limited mobility and the community’s ability to help one another, but it did not stop some riders to lend a helping hand to those who are most affected by the pandemic.

Honda Philippines Inc. (HPI), the No. 1 motorcycle manufacturer in the country, pays respect to the initiatives of these unsung heroes on two wheels, who continue to go above and beyond to help their fellow Filipinos during a time of struggle.

The Man of Togetherness

In the Municipality of Kabacan, North Cotabato, a small community in Barangay Kilagasan, has one man who supported them during this crisis. Mark Rollon, an accounts developer, a member of I RIDE SOLO PH, and an owner of The New XRM125, organized a poster-making contest for the community to help people still have a sense of togetherness.

Last July 24, Rollon organized and donated materials for the poster-making contest, so parents in the community can express their hardships. The contest also gave away facemasks to the families in the community to stay safe and abide by the quarantine guidelines.

The Humanitarian Rider

Hush Aguelo, a proud owner of The New CLICK150i and founder of a humanitarian group of motorcycle riders named “Cebu Tabang Express.” He created this group to call upon volunteer riders to give free delivery services for the less-fortunate people in Cebu.

“We aim to deliver groceries, parcels, and even buy medicine for seniors, minors, pregnant, disabled, people without access to the internet and delivery services, and people without quarantine passes. We’re a free delivery courier delivering essentials,” Aguelo said.

Thanks to The New CLICK150i, he can perform his humanitarian duties, despite the challenges of the pandemic. And, with the help of the volunteers and the group’s beneficiaries, they continue to face the pandemic with their heads held high.

The Mommy Volunteer

Delivery couriers are not the only heroes on two wheels. Jessa Cayago, a teacher, volunteer, and single mother, who uses The All-New Genio to bravely face the dangers of the global health pandemic to help not only her baby but also the youth of tomorrow.

Last July 26, she was on her way to Laguna Bay with the Laguna Genio Riders for a charity ride, when they came across a group of starving street children before arriving at their destination. They decided to prepare food and come back for them.

“Thank God, they were still out there. We came back to the place where we saw the street children, and there we gave them all the food we prepared. It really touched our hearts to see the smile on their face. We usually count the blessings we receive but should also make our blessings count,” Cayago said.

Leaders of Tomorrow

COVID-19 changed many people's lives, including children who were heavily impacted by this pandemic. Jerson Zuniga, President of the XRM Biker's Club (XBC) Iligan Chapter, and other club members took it upon themselves to help the future of this country survive and move forward from this crisis.

Members of XBC Iligan Chapter donated boxes of bond papers to help teachers ease expenses in making and printing learning modules for their students, last August 23.

They also did another outreach activity to help a family of orphans, which included a pregnant sister. The bikers brought supplies such as food, clothes, and other essentials to provide their basic needs during these trying times.

"Our aim is to share as much as we can, even if it is small shares, to help the teachers make the modules the students will use for remote learning. We also shared with the orphans so that they have food and clothing. No matter how small the sacrifice, if many will share, all will have enough," Zuniga said.

These people show that there is still good in this pandemic. Seeing fulfillment of one’s dream and desires to be good is as important to be a human. Same with the “ONE DREAM” Campaign of HPI, which helps fulfill the dreams of Filipinos through the joy of mobility with Honda motorcycles.

The All-New Genio, The New CLICK150i, and TheNew XRM125 are only three of HPI’s top of the line Models that can let Filipinos experience the joy of mobility and the ability to help each other during these difficult times.

DTI-12 Capacitates Local Sewers of Cotabato City in PPE Suit Making

KORONADAL CITY, SOUTH COTABATO—A skills training on Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) Production was conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry 12 (DTI-12) through its Cotabato Satellite Office to capacitate the local sewers of Cotabato City.

Participants to the one-day skills training on August 27, 2020 are members of the Moving Forward for Quality Life Association, operator of DTI’s Shared Service Facility (SSF) on T-shirt Manufacturing, were trained in producing suits and face masks.

The training is a response of DTI-12 to the call of DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez to encourage local manufacturers to re-purpose some of their manufacturing capacity into producing PPEs and masks in order to address the need for local producers who will supply the needs of healthcare workers.

It was also noted in a meeting of Sec. Lopez with some officials of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases last August 19, he mentioned that when the COVID-19 started in February, the Philippines had no local manufacturer of PPE.

“With the covid outbreak, the demand for PPE is greatly increased for everyday use of healthcare personnel. As such, DTI, being one of the line agencies who is mandated to provide service to help in providing PPEs through our SSF cooperators, we have thought of conducting training to this effect to assure that production of PPEs by our SSF Cooperators are sown according to the desired standard,” said Ma. Theresa T. Chua, the OIC Division Chief of DTI-12 CSO.

“We continue to support local micro, small and medium enterprises especially here in Cotabato City as they adjust to the ‘new normal’ and make them more resilient by providing alternative business ventures,” added Chua.

Supporting the initiative is the Local Government Unit of Cotabato City through its Office of the City Mayor-Investment Promotion Division.

Here’s How We Can Create an HIV-Free World in the Next Normal

HIV Free

Inevitably, there are numerous issues of importance that have taken a backseat because of the ongoing pandemic. One of them is HIV, which has not only been a cause for concern for those in the LGBTQIA+ community, but the entire human race as well. And while the DOH recently announced that HIV cases have gone down by an astounding 68% in the 2nd quarter of 2020, they also note that it is no cause for celebration.

Whether the number of cases has truly gone down or is simply unreported due to lockdowns across the country, the fact remains that there are still new cases daily. In fact, before the pandemic, DOH statistics revealed that the country averaged 35 cases on a daily basis.

While we have movements and events like Pride Month that promote HIV-awareness alongside gender equality, bringing awareness to this cause, even while on lockdown, should not stop. There are actually some ways to raise the alarm and bring the issue of HIV to the fore. Here are a few:

A good first step—especially for those who are still on the fence and have reservations on the matter—would be to acknowledge and accept that people are free to identify themselves as they wish and that there is no one way to express one’s self and one’s love—not to mention that HIV exists. With this first step, individuals will have a much easier time trying to understand and empathize with each other and possibly help each other overcome challenges such as HIV, gender inequality, and other similar issues.

One of the many benefits of this fast-paced, digital world we live in today is that seemingly-unlimited information is readily available within our fingertips. This is key because part of creating an HIV-free world also entails learning more about it, the groups of people who usually contract it, and ways in which the virus can be eradicated.

With a clear understanding on HIV, creating a world without it would mean spreading the word, engaging in discourse, and spreading your knowledge to uninformed people. In advocating, one can also learn more through likeminded people looking to express themselves as well.

Lastly, in order to disseminate information and knowledge further while building a sense of community, it would be good to take action and support calls and campaigns such as Durex’s “No One Way Love All Ways” Campaign that supports and promotes all ways of living and expressing.

“A big challenge in the fight against HIV has always been the lack of acknowledgement and proper education on the matter.” Said Dr. Rica Cruz, Licensed Psychologist, Sex Therapist and Educator. “While our current situation presents difficulties as physical events cannot be staged, the opportunity to use available technologies such as social media and online webinars can also be utilized to our advantage. These are excellent tools for spreading the word to a wider audience from the comforts of our home while still being safe in more ways than one.”

Manulife Philippines and Barangay Ginebra share how Filipinos can restart their life game plans

PBA Manulife

Manila – Manulife Philippines and members of well-loved Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) team Barangay Ginebra recently joined forces to hold a free webinar titled “The Champion Within.” It aimed to inspire Filipinos to embrace a winning mindset amid the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barangay Ginebra’s Tim Cone (PBA coach with the most titles in the league's history), L.A. Tenorio (5-time PBA champion and 3-time PBA Finals Most Valuable Player), and Richard del Rosario (2-time PBA Champion and lead assistant coach) shared their personal stories and struggles, and how they have been able to remain motivated to overcome adversities on and off the basketball court.

“The pandemic has not only brought many of us physical and financial challenges, but has also tested our mental strength and well-being. Through this webinar, we at Manulife hope to help Filipinos learn how they cannot just cope with and recover from our current situation, but even win and achieve their dreams in the next normal,” said Melissa Henson, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer of Manulife Philippines. “We partnered with members of the Barangay Ginebra team, one of the most storied teams in Philippine basketball history, because we believe in the power of sports and its ability to teach us meaningful lessons about dealing with failure and challenges, getting back up again, improving yourself, and collaborating with others. We hope the stories and tips shared by Barangay Ginebra help Filipinos win in the game of life and make every day better.”

At the webinar, Cone shared his learnings from coaching winning teams, including the Philippine National Team in various international sporting events, and inspiring champion performance from each individual player. He emphasized that while everyone wants to succeed, there is a price to pay, and that the journey exacts discipline and accountability. He also highlighted the value of taking extreme ownership – of holding one’s self responsible over one’s life and actions.

"As a coach, I am accountable for all that happens in my team. My role is to make sure that I am clear about our goals and help my players build habits to achieve these,” said Cone. “Leaders need to learn to encourage themselves and the people around them to stay motivated, be consistent, and develop that ‘never say die’ spirit to achieve their goals."

Meanwhile, del Rosario introduced the concept of “porosity.”

“Being porous means being open to change and accepting that these changes will enter your life,” said del Rosario. “There will be a lot of disruptions in your life but what can help you adjust is having the right attitude to deal with these situations. It’s not what happens to you, but what happens in you."

Lastly, Tenorio spoke about the importance of teamwork and respecting others. He believes that even if you feel that you’re already at the top of your game, determination, discipline, and humility still matter.

“As a leader and as a player, it is important to remain humble and see the value of each of our team members, so we can stay focused and motivated on our goals,” said Tenorio.

To deepen insights from members of Barangay Ginebra, Manulife also invited certified life coach Carelle Magaliag-Herrera to share tips on life skills Filipinos can develop to build their resilience amid today’s challenges.

“If you want to be emotionally resilient, you should be physically active and mentally positive. To do this, we should practice creating good stories in order to change our state and create strategies that would lead us to success,” said Magaliag-Herrera. “Also, being more compassionate and kinder to yourself allows you to extend these values to others which creates a positive effect on our well-being.”

Shopee Powers Growth for Filipino Brands and Sellers with Enhanced Warehouse and Logistics Capabilities

Shopee Logistics

MANILA, AUGUST 27, 2020 - Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, steps up its logistics preparations to help brands and sellers meet the increased online demand in the peak year-end shopping season.

As e-commerce in the region continues to flourish, there is a higher demand for quicker and secure deliveries for online purchases. Shopee offers a robust logistics ecosystem to help brands and sellers meet evolving consumer needs. This year-end shopping season, Shopee commits to strengthening its warehouse and fulfillment support for brands and sellers, enabling them to increase sales and maximize customer satisfaction even as online shopping activity peaks.

Martin Yu, Associate Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “Quality and reliable logistics are integral to the online shopping experience. As consumers turn to and rely more on e-commerce, businesses aim to deliver more quickly and efficiently to remain competitive. With this, Shopee has built up a robust logistics ecosystem designed for quality, reliable, and scalable deliveries. We want to simplify logistics for brands and sellers by providing them with solutions that support their business needs. The initiative helps them attract more customers, increase sales, and grow their e-commerce business in the long-term.”

Optimized warehouse and inventory support

Shopee has an optimized network of warehouses that form the backbone of its logistics networks in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. They are integrated with the Shopee platform and leverages data to help brands and sellers ship out orders more efficiently.

In the Philippines, its purpose-built Warehouse Management System (WMS) uses data to make smart recommendations to trained warehouse teams, allowing increased efficiency from product picking to dispatching. The WMS uses data to forecast demand ahead of peak shopping periods so that brands and sellers can better allocate their resources. These services help brands and sellers to optimize their inventories and ship out parcels more efficiently, which translates to increased customer satisfaction and drives business growth.

Offering quality, reliable, and scalable deliveries

Shopee has over 100 logistics partners in the region who are highly familiar with local landscapes and provide quality services tailored for consumer needs. Brands and sellers on Shopee can tap on their reliable expertise and extensive coverage to reach customers.

Shopee also has its own Shopee Xpress fleet that specializes in e-commerce deliveries. It provides additional capacity and flexibility for Shopee to scale delivery operations during busy periods, allowing sellers and brands to ship quickly and reliably out parcels during peak shopping seasons.

Shopee’s logistics partners and its own Shopee Xpress fleet are closely integrated with its platform and warehouses. It means that sellers and brands have access to quality and reliable logistics support all year round and can easily manage and track shipments on Shopee.

Driving long-term e-commerce growth for brands and sellers

Shopee’s logistics ecosystem allows sellers and brands to grow their e-commerce business with confidence. Supported by quality, reliable, and scalable logistics on Shopee, brands, and sellers can focus their attention on other vital areas of their business, such as optimizing their product assortment, marketing, and sales.

Shopee’s robust logistics support has enabled sellers and brands to scale their e-commerce business effectively. Across the region, sellers and brands who use Shopee’s warehouse services sell more and ship up to 4 times more parcels than before. It shows how Shopee allows sellers and brands to deliver with higher speed, reliability, and efficiency.

Shopee also enabled sellers and brands to scale their delivery operations in times of peak demand. In the Philippines, the Covid-19 pandemic increased the online demand for Home & Living, Food & Beverages, and Fashion categories. Sellers and brands offering these items on Shopee were able to ship more parcels during this time, allowing them to meet their customers’ needs and grow their e-commerce business.

Yu closed, “As the year-end shopping season arrives, Shopee will continue to strengthen its logistics support and maximize growth for sellers and brands. For users, they can look forward to greater value with exclusive free shipping promotions from our trusted logistics partners across the Philippines. In line with our vision to power the future of retail, we will keep evolving our logistics ecosystem so that our users, sellers, and brands can unlock the full potential of e-commerce in the months and years ahead.”
