5 Must-Know Tips on Preparing a Safer and Healthier Baon

Solane

With the easing of quarantine protocols in many parts of the country, employees are starting to adapt to the new normal and return to work. However, things aren't quite back to how they used to be. For instance, many restaurants are still closed, or are open but with limited capacity which, among other important issues, limits the food choices for Filipino workers during break time.

To help with this, Solane, the country's leading LPG brand, offers some tips on safely preparing healthy baon that you can bring to work.

Clean your cooking space. Prior to cooking, make sure to clean every kitchen surface and equipment that your food will come into contact with to stop bacteria from spreading. This includes the countertops, cutting boards, pans, dishes, and even utensils. Wash or wipe them down with warm, soapy water and dry them with a clean cloth or paper towel. Also, do not forget to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Cook with fresh ingredients. Now more than ever, preparing a healthy meal is essential, and cooking at home enables you to do so. Avoid canned or processed food. Instead, buy fresh and high-quality ingredients. Fresh food can really improve your health since it retains more nutrients. Also, you can enjoy a tastier meal because you get the most flavor possible from fresh ingredients. Try supporting local businesses and buy your groceries from them. Many reputable sellers are on social media and offer delivery.

Use insulated containers. Using an insulated lunch box and containers is the best option for packing your meals. Consider investing in them if you haven’t yet. They can keep your food warm and help minimize bacterial contamination and growth. Another advantage of having insulated containers is that they are reusable, eco-friendly, and may be safer. Single-use plastic containers and food wraps may carry a higher risk of cross-contamination.

Store food properly. To avoid rushing to cook your lunch in the morning, it's a good idea to prepare your meal the night before, or even days ahead. When prepping ahead of time, it’s also advisable to know how to store your food properly to maintain its quality. If you’re storing freshly cooked food, let your food cool first for a few minutes before putting it in your fridge to avoid spoilage. Cook a big batch, then divide it into small portions and put in separate containers for each day of the workweek. Also, always check the shelf life of the meals you make.

Turn off all heat sources. After you are done preparing your meals, make sure to turn off all the cooking equipment that you used, especially the gas stove and the LPG cylinder. Moreover, it is best to cook with a trusted liquefied petroleum gas brand like Solane to help ensure safety in the kitchen.

Invest in Global ‘Emerging Themes’ to ‘Future Proof’ Portfolio, says BPI AMTC

bpi

The economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t entirely prove a downward trend for investors who wish to diversify their portfolios on a global scale. There are still opportunities for investing, such as in global “emerging themes,” to future-proof one’s portfolio.

This is according to Allen Martin Dee, Head of Investment Solutions at BPI Asset Management and Trust Corporation (BPI AMTC) in a recently held BPI AMTC webinar “The Bull, The Bear and The Virus – The Anatomy of Resilient Investment Plans.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic will change the way consumers behave, and we're already seeing it now. This is the perfect time to future proof your portfolio by investing in emerging themes such as healthcare, technology, innovation, and sustainability,” explained Dee.

“These themes are going to do very well in the coming years and we encourage you to diversify your portfolio so that you can take advantage of this opportunity,” he added.

Diversification is important because every year, there are winners and losers in the market, Dee said. “There was a time when the S&P 500, the main US index of stocks, was the best performing in the past 12 years. But there are also times when Emerging Markets did better.”

He continued, “there were times when gold did better, and a year when cash was the best performing asset class. It's very difficult to pick winners, and there is a different winner almost every single year. But if you have a balanced portfolio, then you can take advantage of whoever wins in that year.”

BPI AMTC also noticed that there is a common misconception on investing in global assets, as some investors think that this is riskier. But this is not always the case, said Dee.

“The fact is, over a ten-year period, the numbers show that global equities gave better returns with less volatility compared to local equities. While the Philippines continued to grow at a rapid pace and obtained its investment grade credit rating along the way, other parts of the world are advancing more significantly. Dramatic progress in the varied fields of technology and healthcare spurs new innovative ideas, giving investors a glimpse of the future and a chance to participate in potentially more profitable ventures. A balance of domestic and offshore investments keeps your portfolio diversified and resilient over the long term.”

Investing in the time of COVID-19

The webinar also featured Bank of the Philippine Islands and BPI AMTC Independent Director Ignacio Bunye who shared his experience as a seasoned investor.

Bunye’s investment journey with BPI AMTC, which spans over two decades, has weathered several market declines including the 2008 Global Financial Crisis.

To navigate investments amidst COVID-19, he shared some insights on how to build one’s savings and how to effectively invest in the long term.

“As the saying goes, every threat has a corresponding opportunity. Under these extraordinary times, it is prudent for you to set aside a cash buffer to meet your basic expenses for a certain period of time and for any unforeseen circumstances. Having done this, just stay calm and stay invested. Keep your eyes wide open for the evolving risks while simultaneously looking out for investment opportunities.”

Mr Bunye also emphasized the importance of working with fund managers who are better equipped to weather the turbulence in the financial markets brought by crises such as COVID-19.

“A doctor does not operate on himself but gets another doctor to do so. But the more practical reason is the lack of time I can devote to managing the investment. It is almost impossible to have an ordinary day job and still be as in touch with the financial markets as much as a fund manager can. Because of hands-on, day-to-day interaction, a fund manager is also better positioned to make timely investment decisions.”

The webinar was attended by over 600 clients and bank frontliners.

BPI AMTC holds regular webinars on the financial markets, featuring its diverse pool of investment experts in the Philippines, and foreign fund managers from Hong Kong, and Singapore.

BPI Employees and Clients Raise P12.7M for Disaster, Pandemic Facility

BPI

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), through BPI Foundation recently turned over P12.7 million to the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) for the construction of a two-storey 506 square-meter safe shelter for people burdened by disasters and pandemics.

The funds came from the collaborative efforts of BPI employees, clients, and the BPI Foundation through the Bank’s fundraising initiative called #TaaLove: Sa Puso Magmumula ang Kanilang Pagbangon.

“As an institution, we are committed to continue playing a constructive and meaningful role in nation-building. We are grateful for the generosity of our dear clients and employees who took part in this initiative to help our fellow Filipinos in need,” BPI President and CEO Cezar Consing said.

Early this year, BPI called on its employees to heed the call for help by people affected by the Taal Volcano eruption. After initially raising P2.7 million from employees and a matching amount by the BPI Foundation, the program was eventually opened to the general public through the BPI branches from February 14 to March 13, 2020. An additional P10 million was raised from clients.

The multi-purpose facility was initially intended to support those severely affected by the Taal Volcano eruption and to prepare for future disasters. In light of the ongoing pandemic, the design will be modified so that it can also function as an alternative health care facility.

The facility will be built to withstand hazards in the locality and will accommodate approximately 300 people. Livelihood activities will also be held there when there are no disasters and pandemics to deal with. The construction will start in August once the ideal location is identified and the new design is approved.

DTI Lifts Quantity Limits on Essential Products Except for 4 Essential Products

DTI Sanitizer

Amid the community quarantine, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) issued Memorandum Circular (MC) 20-36, amending the previously issued circulars on Anti- Hoarding and Anti-Panic Buying, MC 20-07, MC-20-10 and MC 20-25 that limit consumer purchase on essential and vital products.

Under the latest circular, the general public can now purchase a maximum of five (5) bottles for sizes of 1Liter and below and a maximum of three (3) for sizes more than 1Liter for products such as disinfecting alcohol, hand sanitizers, and disinfecting liquids.

Meanwhile, a maximum of 50 pieces of face mask per person, whether N95 or N88 may now be availed of under MC 20-36 as compared to 10 pieces previously in MC 20-25.

Disinfecting alcohol

5 bottles for sizes one liter and below 3 bottles for sizes more than one liter

Hand sanitizers

5 bottles for sizes one liter and below 3 bottles for sizes more than one liter

Disinfecting liquids

5 bottles for sizes one liter and below 3 bottles for sizes more than one liter

Face Masks

(N95 and N88)

1 box of 50 pieces

It can be recalled that the quantity limits for alcohol, sanitizers, and disinfecting liquids were limited to two (2) pieces regardless of size under MC 20-07 which was issued last March 2020.

Further, under MC-20-36, the quantity limits for basic necessities and prime commodities such as locally produced instant noodles, canned sardines, canned regular milk, powdered milk in sachet, instant coffee in sachet, mineral water, loaf bread, canned pork, canned beef, detergent soap, bath soap, and condiments have been lifted.

“As we continue the battle against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) while at the same time adjusting to the new normal, our manufacturers and retailers continue to assure us of the sufficiency of supply of finished goods as well as raw materials necessary for production of these basic necessities and prime commodities, hence the need to relax the restrictions on some products and increase the quantity of limit per transaction for those that are vital and essential during this pandemic”, says DTI Consumer Protection Group Undersecretary Ruth B. Castelo.

The Department enjoins the consumers to always observe physical distancing when doing grocery shopping or doing business outside their homes and to always sanitize their hands.

For consumer-related concerns and queries, you may send an email to ConsumerCare@dti.gov.ph or reach us thru the One-DTI (1-384) Hotline.

DTI Credits DOTr Orders to Address High Shipping Costs

DTI

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez credited and supported the initiatives taken by Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade to address mounting complaints against unreasonable shipping charges. This, following the transportation department’s issuance of multiple Department Orders to bring down the cost of shipping and provide redress on complaints against shipping lines.

Sec. Tugade issued an order creating the Shippers Protection Office (SPO) to assist shippers that have been assessed unreasonable fees and charges by shipping lines. Under Department Order 2020-008, the SPO is authorized to accept complaints pertaining to rates, charges, practices, and operations of international and domestic shipping lines.

“The creation of such an office is very important as importers, exporters, forwarders, and brokers will now have a venue to ventilate complaints against shipping lines charging exorbitant and unreasonable fees,” said DTI Secretary Lopez.

“The intervention of DOTr in addressing this issue could not have come at a better time, considering that this has been a recurring problem for shippers, which affects the general cost of goods and has further aggravated the economic difficulties that all businesses have been experiencing due to the pandemic,” Sec. Lopez said.

“At the end of the day, it’s consumers who will bear the burden of these high costs in terms of higher prices of final products. Shippers may file their complaints directly at the SPO,” the trade chief added.

Sec. Tugade also issued Department Order 2020-009 prescribing a minimum free time period of eight (8) days for cargoes unloaded by international shipping lines. The eight-day period extends the period of five (5) days currently granted by shipping lines before collecting demurrage charges on containers. This again is a very welcome intervention in lowering the overall charges applied to shippers and consignees.

Studies have shown that the five-day free time period granted by shipping lines to Filipino importers is one of the shortest free time periods in Asia. The eight-day free time period aligns the free time period granted by many shipping lines to importers in other countries.

Moreover, under the government's policy of ensuring adequate supply of food at affordable prices, Sec. Tugade also issued Department Order 2020-007 directing all domestic shipping lines to allocate cargo space and provide preferential rates for agricultural and food products.

The order enjoins all domestic shipping lines to allocate no less than 12% of a vessel’s cargo capacity per voyage exclusively for agriculture and food products and provide a discount of 40% of published rates for cargoes of said products. The said order is also expected to benefit farmers by way of boosting demand for locally produced agricultural products. It will likewise help ensure the unhampered movement of said products across the country.

“The longer free time of minimum of eight days prescribed under DO 2020-009 is expected to minimize, if not eliminate, demurrage charges to be incurred by consignees on imported products,” Sec. Lopez explained.

He also pointed out that importers that are able to release their shipments within eight days no longer have to pay demurrage charges.

For locally-produced agriculture and food products, the allocation of a vessel’s cargo capacity and provision of discounted rates as provided under DOTr’s order can lead to increased competitiveness and demand for such products. This will contribute to the viability of domestic food production, as well as help sustain the government's efforts to attain food security for the country.

“These initiatives are expected to help stabilize prices of many basic commodities, which will ultimately redound to the benefit of Filipino consumers. Secretary Tugade deserves to be commended for taking concrete actions to resolve the issue of high shipping costs,” added Sec. Lopez.

The ROG Strix notebooks have been the go-to esports laptops for many professional gamers. This year, the Strix line expands with more design choices, more capabilities, and even better performance.

The SCAR series boldly proclaims its gaming chops with an Intel processor up to the latest eight-core Core i9-10980-HK, up to 32 GB of 3200 MHz DDR4 RAM, and up to the RTX 2080 SUPER GPUs. The fastest 300hz/3ms display with 100% sRGB shows the battlefield in full fidelity.

Last year’s innovative Keystone also gets an upgrade on the new SCAR laptops. Keystone II allows users to link quick commands and other functions to a physical NFC-enabled key, which docks into the side of the chassis. Inserting a Keystone can launch a specific operating mode, the Armoury Crate game library, or a program or game of choice. Removing it can instantly activate a stealth mode that minimizes apps, mutes audio, or logs out of Windows.

The ROG Strix G now comes in three different designs: Original Black, the recently launched Glacier Blue, and all-new Electro Punk color -- a bold black and pink design that is sure to turn heads.

The Electro Punk edition puts a twist on the streamlined gaming machine. A sleek stripe around the chassis mirrors the outlined edge of the touchpad, while cybertext patterning adorns the deck. Brighter touches include highlighted WASD keys and an unmissable pink ROG logo across the lid. It also comes with an exclusive Electro Punk ROG Sheath 35” Desk Mat and ROG Impact II Electro Punk Gaming Mouse.
