ONE FC: WUSHU WORLD CHAMPION RENE CATALAN ENLISTS THE HELP OF MALAYSIAN FIGHTER WHO DONATED HIS EARNINGS DURING TYPHOON YOLANDA

Rene Catalan has arguably one of the most impressive track records among all Filipino mixed martial artists.  He was a Wushu world champion who also won gold at the Asian Games.
However, his mixed martial arts career has not gotten off to as smooth a start.  He put up a spirited performance but ultimately fell to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Alex Silva and then had a controversial loss that was eventually reversed into a no contest against Khim Dima.
He now gets a chance to right the ship in Manila though, as he finally gets to compete in his home country for the first time when he takes on Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke at ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY.
Rene Catalan sought the assistance of ONE FC Malaysian Featherweight Champion AJ Pyro who was highly publicized last year as one of the first foreigners who went to Tacloban to help the victims.  Coach AJ, fresh from winning a ONE FC tilt in Kuala Lumpur pledged his earnings to Yolanda’s victims and thru ONE FC, arranged a visit there along with a team of 25 doctors.
According to Coach AJ, "The will to win is important but the will to prepare is vital.   Rene is very serious about his December 5 fight.  He did contact me a long time ago about his intention to do a serious full training camp here in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo.  Once his December 5 fight was confirmed, he flew to KK right away for his training camp.”  While in Borneo, Catalan also trained alongside Anne Osman and the rest of the Borneo Tribal Squad team.
“He really wants to win this fight not only for himself, but he really wants to dedicate this win for the Filipino people,” he adds.
Rene Catalan triumphed in the Wushu World Championships on multiple occasions and also won gold at the 2006 Asian Games.  Having proven to be one of the best in the sport of Wushu, Catalan is now determined to do the same in mixed martial arts.
Catalan is now back in the Philippines poised to make a run in ONE FC.  He first has to face Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke, who looked impressive in his three ONE FC outings thus far.  Muay Thai World Champion Amanuaysirichoke has finished all of his opponents with relative ease and put on exciting performances to boot.  This is a battle of two of the most renowned striking styles in the martial arts realm and fans will be in for a pugilistic treat.
Coach AJ concludes the interview by saying, “Rene is ready to battle his opponent and stand up even on the ground…Rene will win!”

New book tackles the Ateneo-Lasalle Rivalry: How did it all begine?

The UAAP season is reaching its climax again with the teams of Ateneo, DelaSalle, NU and FEU in the final lineup. UAAP fans are awaiting with bated breath for the final toss up: is it going to be an Ateneo-La Salle match in the finish?

Ever since the start of the University Athletic Association in the Philippines in 1938, Ateneo and La Salle games have drawn the most ardent and passionate crowds. Ticket sales for these sports matches have virtually subsidized the whole season. The rivalry at the games has extended into many other competitions and has at times intensified into ugly verbal and physical tussles between students. This has led many to ask: Is basketball the be-all and end-all of the rivalry between schools?

This question is what columnist, TV host and author RJ Ledesma tackles extensively with his trademark humor and ironic wit in his latest book entitled BLUE BABBLE, GANG GREEN the Ateneo-La Salle Rivalry. In his essays, RJ looks at the different angles and possible reasons for the intense competition between the two schools. In his research RJ refers to an article written in the 90's about a controversy that erupted n the late 19th century America between the two largest teaching controversy apparently extended beyond the Atlantic Ocean into Philippines shares and into the campuses of the Ateneo de Manila and Dela Salle University.

Of this controversy, RJ writes that "It was a rivalry that got downright Latin" and compares it with the rivalries between the Spartans versus the Persians. Toyota versus Crispa and Noranians versus Vilmanians.." Nevertheless, Christian values will prevail at the end. After each game and victory, the winners and losers are reminded that to be a La Sallian, one must be open to the needs of others and to be an Atenean, one must be a man for others. In his conclusion he writes, "Ateneo and La Salle have both enriched me as a person. And we continue to seek God in all this. God's presence is wherever we are, whomever we are with. Whether they be Blue or Green."

Caritas Manila’s BUY & GIVE Expo 2

Buy and Give 2 through Caritas Manila’s Expo at Glorietta

The Social Entrepreneurship Program of Caritas Manila will hold the second-run of a Grand Expo dubbed “Buy and Give Expo 2”on November 28-30, 2014 at the Glorietta Activity Center, Palm Drive, Makati City.

Caritas Manila’s Social Entrepreneurship Program helps the livelihood of poor communities by encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit and marketing their products. This program is providing skills and training to the urban poor communities and marginalized sector as well as honing them to become social entrepreneurs. Caritas Margins and Segunda Mana are two of the programs under Social Entreprise.

The first expo was held last year, November 29, 30 and December 1, 2013 at the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City.

Buy and Give Expo 2 will showcase products made by social entrepreneurs. It aims to raise funds to help sustain the social enterprise and other pro-poor programs of Caritas Manila.

Here are some of the products that you can see in the expo:

The Expo will sell products which are 100% made by marginalized communities in Metro Manila and provinces, such as gift items, accessories and personal care products made by urban poor families. It will also offer artworks made by residents of the National Bilibid Prison and pre-loved items and inventories generously shared by the benefactors and corporate partners of Caritas Manila.

The Expo is dubbed as BUY and GIVE because every product enables the buyer to GIVE and SHARE in 3 ways: First, the buyer generates income for the producer from the marginalized community or sector. Second, part of the income is plowed back to Caritas Manila to sustain its pro-poor programs, specifically the Skills and Livelihood Training and the Youth Servant Leadership and Education Programs. Third, the buyer gets high-quality products at friendly prices for his personal use or as gift to people he cares about.

Chris Tiu – CARITAS Ambassador is also helping the caritas manila to gain more funds and send more unfortunate kids to school, and give them brighter future..

FILIPINO WARRIORS TO HOLD OPEN WORKOUT ON TUESDAY

Three of the biggest sports stars in the Philippines are set to hold a workout to showcase their skills this coming Tuesday. Kevin Belingon, Eduard Folayang and Honorio Banario are set to return to action at ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY, and prior to the biggest bouts of their lives, will showcase to a select group of media the new skills that they have acquired since we last seen them in the ONE FC cage.
We last saw the representatives from Team Lakay in action in various events earlier this year, and they now return to the year-end event in Manila to cap off 2014. Eduard Folayang and Kevin Belingon can be considered title contenders, and they will be poised for a potential opportunity in the future should they overcome their respective opponents on 5 December.
Folayang is riding a two-fight winning streak while Belingon came close in a #1 contender’s bout earlier this year. Teammate and former ONE FC Featherweight World Champion Honorio Banario will also compete in Manila for the first time this year in a potential epic. Standing opposite Banario in the cage will be Herbert Burns, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world champion who is on a hot streak since debuting in ONE FC.
The Wushu exponents turned mixed martial artists are the Philippines’ best hopes to a world championship in ONE FC. Once criticised for their lack of grappling skills, they have rounded out their skills with the incorporation of a wrestling regime. ComeTuesday next week, a privileged few will get to see the new and improved versions of these warriors before they fly the flag for the country against foreign mixed martial artists. This is the final rallying call for Filipino fans to join them as they start their conquest towards ONE FC gold!

“Green Switch,” SM’s Solar Rooftop Project

SM City North EDSA is now the biggest solar powered mall in the world with over 5,760 solar panels with a maximum capacity of 1.5 megawatts!

With President Benigno S. Aquino III as guest of honor. See his Speech (source: official gazette)

SM City North EDSA launched the country’s largest solar rooftop power plant on Nov. 24, Monday. The Green Switch SM Solar Rooftop Launch, hosted by Kim Atienza, took place in SM North’s Northlink Building roof deck where government officials such as President Noynoy Aquino, Senator Loren Legarda, House Speaker Sonny Belmonte and Q.C. Mayor Herbert Bautista were in attendance. The president of Solar Philippines, Leandro Leviste, was also there to welcome the honored guests in celebrating the mall’s contribution to a healthier and safer environment.

This initiative to use renewable energy resource, such as solar energy, has been previously adapted by SM City Xiamen in main land China. Solar Philippines hopes to locally promote cleaner air, save electricity, and prevent climate change through partnering with SM Prime Holdings, Inc. by establishing more solar panels that has started with SM North EDSA, and will hopefully progress to other SM Malls.

President of SM Supermalls, Annie Garcia, informed all that they are already aiming to initiate this same project to a number of SM branches. “After SM City North EDSA’s green switch today, we shall begin installing solar panels in SM City Cavite and SM City Dasamariñas in Cavite. SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City shall follow next with 10,534 solar panels to be installed,“ said Garcia.

“With the future generation in mind, we shall continue to seek ways and solutions to climate change. We shall continue to collaborate with the best,” added the president of SM Supermalls.

Currently, the 5,760 solar panels in SM North EDSA have the capability of powering 16,000 lighting fixtures, 59 escalators and 20 elevators while counteracting 1,200 tons of carbon emissions (CO2) per year. These panels are also expected to generate 1.5 megawatts of solar energy, which is equivalent to covering five percent of the mall’s consumption per day, therefore saving an estimated two million pesos a month.

Alejandro Leviste, 21 year old founder of Solar Philippines, also shared his thoughts about the joyous milestone of this project. He expressed how SM’s involvement in solar energy could inspire more businesses to get into the use of renewable energy to save the environment. “The one thing I want to underscore in this message is that SM’s support for solar energy is important far beyond this project in itself. Today marks a watershed moment for solar in the Philippines, because where SM goes, the rest of Philippines will follow. SM is a spark that ignites the future of a massive shift towards solar energy,” said Leviste.

With the country facing a potential energy shortage in 2015, harnessing the sun’s power will grant long-term benefits for the Philippines, both environmentally and economically. It is SM’s hope that their new way of conserving electricity and saving the environment will also inspire other establishments to follow

BUTLER-POTARD REMATCH SET FOR ONE FC: WARRIOR'S WAY

At ONE FC: TOTAL DOMINATION last year, light heavyweights Sylvain Potard and Jake Butler faced off in a highly anticipated contest. Jake Butler, the former NCAA wrestler and captain of his wrestling team at Princeton University was riding a three-fight winning streak with all finishes, and was hoping to add another win to his record. Meanwhile, the unheralded Potard was making his ONE FC debut.

Potard though, had other plans. After a close first round, the Frenchman started the second round with a left hook that landed on Butler’s chin. He then followed it up with a series of relentless strikes that called an end to the contest. The win was a huge upset that silenced the 12,000-strong crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Butler, the Ivy League alum who gave up Wall Street for an MMA career is hungry for revenge. He believes that he is the better mixed martial artist and simply got caught. He bounced back from the defeat by trouncing Egypt’s Mohamed Ali, and immediately asked for the rematch. Butler was granted his request.  Now more than a year removed from that contest, Butler and Potard are once again set to lock horns at ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY.

Butler stated, “He’s the only loss on my record. I would love to get in there and do it again. I’m pretty confident I can beat him. I think the last bout was not a reflection of the type of fighter that I am and what I can do.”

To achieve victory, Butler would probably be well suited to return to his wrestling roots. His takedowns have proved unstoppable thus far in his career. In their first meeting, Butler managed to take Potard down in the final seconds of the first round. Butler will be the strong favorite to emerge victorious should he be able to bring the bout to the canvas.

Manila fans will also be treated to another light heavyweight clash as James McSweeney faces Roger Gracie. ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY could determine the future of the ONE FC light heavyweight division.

Isabelo Tampinco Master Sculptor

Vibal Foundation, the National Museum pay tribute to the life and art of master sculptor Isabelo Tampinco

The famous facade of the Manila Cathedral, the high relief on Santo Domingo Church’s molave door, and the main altar at the Laoag Cathedral—these are just few of the masterpieces created by Isabelo Tampinco, one of the greatest Filipino sculptors. Known for his woodcarvings in churches, Tampinco endeavored to create a distinct Filipino style by infusing his carvings and sculptures with native flora and fauna designs, a classic style that would come to be known by his name.

Vibal Foundation celebrates the artistry of Tampinco as it publishes The Life and Art of Isabelo Tampinco by Dr. Santiago Albano Pilar, a book that explores his life and the influences that molded the style he created. Tampinco presents a comprehensive gallery of his extant works as well as archival photographs of his lost masterpieces. While the ravages of war obliterated much of his work, what remains—showcased in the book—cements Tampinco’s status as one of the greatest Filipino masters.

For his exceptional talent and skill, Vibal Foundation and the National Museum gave tribute to the master sculptor a few months ago at the National Museum. Author Santiago Albano Pilar, who dedicated over ten years to his in-depth research on Tampinco’s life and works, graced the event and spoke to members of the press about how important it is to revisit the country’s past to further develop a national identity.

“Revisiting our past does not simply mean unlocking deep, dark secrets of how our country and our people used to be,” said Dr. Pilar. “It is a rediscovery of our rich cultural heritage and through hundreds of forgotten master artists, such as Isabelo Tampinco, an exquisite part of our heritage lives on which allows us to shape our society today.”

The event also allowed guests to tour the National Museum’s Fundacion Santiago Hall, which houses notable Tampinco sculptures dating back to the nineteenth century.

The launch of the book is another proud success for Vibal Foundation, Inc., the corporate philanthropy arm of Vibal Group. “The Vibal Group extends its commitment and responsibility by focusing on education in the broadest sense of the word and we believe that there is so much to be learned about our country and heritage,” said Gus A. Vibal, executive director of Vibal Foundation and president of the Vibal Group of Companies.

During the media launch, Vibal premiered a video documentary entitled Estilo Tampinco, which chronicles the rediscovery of the seemingly forgotten master. The video contains interviews with the author Santiago Albano Pilar; Jeremy Barns, director of the National Museum and editor of the book; and Tampinco aficionados and art collectors Ernie Salas and Don Conrado Escudero.

You're Not You - You Will Be Moved!

We are pretty familiar with chain video that went viral a few months ago which is the ALS Bucket Challege to raise awareness to what used to be a not very common syndrome called ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease, and rarely Charcot disease—is a neurodegenerative disorderwith various causes. The term motor neurone disease (MND) is sometimes used interchangeably with ALS while others use it to refer to a group of similar conditions that include ALS.  ALS is characterised by muscle spasticity, rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle wasting. This results in difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. The disease usually starts around the age of 60, except in cases that are directly inherited when the usual age of onset is around 50.
About 5 to 10% of cases are directly inherited from a person's parents.  ALS is the most common of the five types of motor neuron disease.
The average survival from onset to death is three to four years.  Only 4% survive longer than 10 years, although rare cases survive 50 years or more. Most die from respiratory failure. In much of the world rates of ALS are unknown.  In Europe the disease affects about 2.2 people per 100,000 per year. In the United States, more than 5,600 are diagnosed every year, and up to 30,000 Americans are currently affected. ALS is responsible for 2 deaths per 100,000 people per year.
Descriptions of the disease date back to at least 1824 by Charles Bell. In 1869 the connection between the symptoms and the underlying neurological problems were first described by Jean-Martin Charcot who in 1874 began using the term amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.  It became well known in the United States when it affected a famous baseball player by the name of Lou Gehrig,  and later when the ice bucket challenge became popular in 2014.

You're Not You
2014 Film

Kate is a suave, successful classical pianist just diagnosed with ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). Bec is a brash college student and would-be rock singer who can barely keep her wildly chaotic affairs, romantic and otherwise, together. Yet, when Bec takes a job assisting Kate, Kate sees something special in the way Bec takes care of her. Kate and Bec find each other’s  strength through their weaknesses. You're Not You explores how two strangers can bring out the best in each other even in the midst of trials and tribulations.  This movie also gives face to the much talked about ALS and will definitely make people more compassionate with victim of the said disease.

FILIPINA BOXERS TURNED ONE FC MMA FIGHTERS READY FOR ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY

Filipina boxers turned MMA fighters Ana Julaton and Jujeath Nagaowa are both set to show their wares on December at SM Arena.

ONE FC’s May event in Manila earlier this year was a successful endeavour, as both former professional boxers Jujeath Nagaowa and Ana Julaton earned victories and solidified their standing as leading belles of women’s MMA in the Philippines.

At ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY on December 5, they aim to put on a repeat performance. Both women will once again be in action on the same night. Nagaowa is set to face Cambodia’s Tharoth Sam while Julaton has a stern test in front of her against Egypt’s Walaa Abbas.

The ONE FC female mixed martial arts scene continues to thrive, especially with the addition of the two former boxers. Julaton previously won both the WBO and IBA Super Bantamweight titles in boxing.

Julaton then decided to try her hand in mixed martial arts and immediately fell in love with the sport. She has now enlisted the help of prominent wrestling coach Ricky Lundell to improve her grappling and is eager to showcase her newfound skills in her next fight.

Julaton is now set to fight in Manila for the second time, and will look to have her hand raised in victory once again in front of her fans in the Philippines.

“Ana is so proud to be Filipina and has been working so hard to make all her supporters and Kababayans proud of her. With Coach Ricky Lundell teaching her ground game you can expect a new and improved Ana Julaton,” her boxing coach, Angelo Reyes, says.

Nagaowa, on the other hand, is a true rags-to-riches story.

She came through the ranks in the Philippine boxing scene before winning the WBO Asia title, competing in several bouts in Korea and Japan. The native of Baguio City has ferocious punching power and is rounding out her game, training with some of the top gyms in the country.

It may be a matter of time before a ONE FC World Championship belt is introduced for the women’s division, but both Julaton and Nagaowa can stake a claim for a title opportunity with victories at ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY.

Tickets for ONE FC: WARRIOR’S WAY on 5 December in Manila are on sale now at SM Tickets (http://www.smtickets.com). Ticket categories begin with the full Red Carpet and cageside experience for VIPs at PHP 6,360 followed by Patron PHP 3,180, Lower Box PHP 1,280, Upper Box PHP 640 and General Admission PHP 220.  Prices include ticketing fee. Vitamin C - MegaStar of all Vitamins by Mega C

Vitamin C,as we all know is a water-soluble nutrient found in some food and acts as an antioxidant, helps protect cells from the damages caused by free radicals. Free radicals are compounds formed when our bodies convert the food we eat into energy. People are also exposed to free radicals in the environment from cigarette smoke, air pollution, and ultraviolet light from the sun. Aside from that our body also needs vitamin C to make collagen, a protein required to help wounds heal. In addition, vitamin C improves the absorption of iron from plant-based foods and helps the immune system work properly to protect the body from disease. These are some of the facts that describes what Vitamin C is which is in a way something that is relevant to all of us because this is for me the most important Vitamin that a person should have  for the obvious benefits that you can get from different physical and mental challenges we get everyday.

I'm glad to be introduced to a company that manufacture and market Vitamin C's in the market which is very beneficial to me because Vitamin C is something that can be taken from food that I do not eat ever since(like fruits and vegetables) and so I only have fewer option for regular intake of this essential Vitamin.

I met Mega C Health Ventures, Incorporated which is a leading direct selling marketing company engaged in the distribution and retailing of health and wellness products and services that address the needs not only of every Filipino but also of every human being.

Honored to also have met the Chairman and President Yvonne Rebecca V. Benavidez which is a Public Relations specialist by education and profession, Yvonne was nominated director immediately after subscribing stocks of the company and, because of her expertise in Organizational Management and Public Relations, She was appointed General Manager, traits and qualities the company severely needs in its long term expansion and development plan.

In the even we were able to know more about Mega C Vitamin C and the advantages of their product. On of which is it is Sodium Ascorbate which means that it is non acidic and that is definitely better, another fascinating thing about the vitamin is that it has veggie coating(vegetable based capsule) which means that it is easier to digest, even demonstrated to us by putting Mega C in a glass of room temperature water  and dissolved in minutes.

We all know that Vitamin C is the mother of all vitamins and I'm sure you can just search all the amazing benefits that we can get from it. At the end of the questions and answer portion of the program I was sold out to what Mega C have and one of the best thing I heard in the event was how affordable their product is, only P5 per capsule.

Vitorrio's Steakhouse - New House of Steaks in QC

Only more than a couple of months old this amazing steakhouse is already attracting more clients in the area where the restaurant is situated.

We got a chance to visit this restaurant to try out the menu that they have and to know a little background of the restaurant as well which is owned by Chef Victor Daluz backed with years of experience as Ship Chef and Chef for their family owned restaurant in the US. The restaurant is actually just below a recording studio and naturally when you dine in this restaurant you'll most likely see some of the known figures in the Philippines and can see them in Vittorio's Steakhouse Facebook Page.

To start with, let me show you how the restaurant looks like.

The space is okey and can accommodate approximately 90-100 people. Another interesting fact about the restaurant are the paintings hanging on the walls of the dining area up to the walls of the lavatories which were fantastic works of the students of Dolores Quezon. Good thing about it is if you will like the painting you can purchase it as well and proceeds will go back to the students which is a big help in supporting their studies.

After a few minutes of interview with Chef Victor Daluz dishes were served to us and also time for dinner.

First in our menu was the Chopped Noodle Salad. Unfortunately a carnivore like me is not a fan of salads from what I can say, seems that everyone likes it. Followed by Lemon Buttered Fish Fillet made of fried dory with lemon sauce, Salpicao that has tender beef, Garlic Butter Shrimp with an awesome sauce for dipping. You will also love their Thai Chicken Pizza topped with bagnet, laing, spanish sardines and peanut sauce, the second pizza was the Crab Shrimp Pizza if you like the seafood kind of pizza. And of course we were served a series of steak(its a steakhouse in the first place). Australian Rib Eye, Baby Back Ribs, Porterhouse Steak and Pan Seared Hanging Tender Steak all of which are perfectly cooked, juicy and tasty on what a mouth watering steak should taste like. Although most of the ingredients were imported it is still served fresh and all are delicious. You should also try their Fried Rice which for me actually can stand alone just by it because it really taste good.Lastly after all the steak and most of us are full Clam Pasta and Banana Split was served and they both also taste great and a good way to end a perfect meal set.
