Zilch - Pupil Band's Most Sophisticated Release To Date

When Ely Buendia sings "The world is a place / behind this firewall" on Zilch's scorching opener "Firewall:, it is both an invitation and a taunt: a wink - nudge suggestion that there is a plane beyond the rabbit hole - that the practice of imagining is a reward in itself, perhaps the best reward of all - but also a show of sneer-filled discontent. In this day and age, when unthinkable things start coming to life, when fiction starts ringing like the truth, it is odd of anyone to not want to rearrange the furniture in their minds even for a bit. And Zilch, Pupil's fourth full-length and their first with MCA Music, Inc. is charitable in imaginings both musical and lyrical.

Finished during a collaborative sabbatical of sorts - Buendia doing shows with punk-rockabilly supergroup The Oktaves, as well as booking the occasional solo revue home and elsewhere; drummer Wendell Garcia doing session work with a host of acts, even reuniting for a few gigs with Barbie's Cradle; and perhaps most publicly, bassist Dok Sergio and new guitarist Jerome Velasco doing a string of successful shows with he momentarily-reformed Teeth - the new record brings with it a fresh perspective on Pupil music making.

One thing is apparent, though: the quartet has long found their musical thesis, and no uncertain number of dalliance will make them stray from their project: in-your-face guitar rock executed in the most rudimentary manner, and this much is evident in first two singles "Out of Control: and "Why". "I've always preferred a stripped-down sound live and on record, and this was the objective from the moment I started writing new songs for Zilch," Buendia shares. Check out

What Pupil has in their hands in Zilch, ultimately, is a more refined rethinking of their sound. "The guitars growl, the drums are in your face, no synth pads, very little delay. It's an album played on the gut level. Yet it is, I think our most sophisticated release to date," Buendia offers. Velasco confidently chimes in, "Personally I find that it's inevitable that the band shall release a definitive rock record. I think this was a great time to do it" Throughout the process, the band was both instinctive and resolute in reconciling hte sound in their heads with the sound that eventually ends up on disc. Wendel Garcia's drum parts, for one, were redone almost entirely in a rented photography studio in an attempt to capture the much-revered John Bonham (skinsman for Led Zeppelin) sound. The band DIY'd the whole thing, installing their own personal mattresses for soundproofing, with bassist Dok Sergio manning the controls.

"Zilch" is now out in CD's at Astroplus and Odyssey outlets under MCA Music, Inc. It is also available through digital download via spinnr.ph and iTunes and streaming via sppinr.ph, Spotify and Deezer.

Court Order on PWU Forclosure

The impending foreclosure on Philippine Women’s University reported in the news has been halted. Dr. Helena Z Benitez, PWU chairperson and a longtime creditor of the university, has filed for involuntary rehabilitation of PWU in a bid to preserve its operations after STI Holdings initiated foreclosure proceedings against the university.

Dr. Benitez said in her petition filed before Manila Regional Trial Court that PWU’s operations are obviously dependent on the income generated by its campuses, and that the foreclosure proceedings will prevent PWU from paying its debts and will render it insolvent. “The foreclosure proceedings…will also drastically disrupt and stop PWU’s school operations,” she said.

PWU owes Benitez P33.6 million. Benitez submitted a proposed rehabilitation plan for PWU, the goal of which is to enable PWU to meet its obligations to its creditors (including STI) without disrupting the conduct of its business. It involves a rehabilitation period providing for the sale of assets to cover part of the debts of PWU, while the rest will be paid in accordance with projected cashflow over a 10-year period.

PWU is a non-stock, not-for-profit institution which has been supported by the Benitez family for the past 96 years. In 2011 STI offered to help PWU by starting a joint venture, which went sour. Despite the Benitez family’s offers to pay STI for the P513M advanced to PWU (and its sister company Unlad) as part of the joint venture, STI Holdings last month initiated foreclosure proceedings against PWU covering its Taft Ave. and Indiana St. campuses, the Jose Abad Santos Memorial School (JASMS) campus on EDSA, Quezon City, and a property in Davao City. The JASMS QC property is the site of a condo mall development announced by STI in September 2014, which the Benitez family and the JASMS community opposed. In December, STI initiated default proceedings against PWU which the Benitez family contested in court.

The Benitez family welcomed the Manila court’s issuance of a Commencement Order which paves the way for the approval of a rehabilitation plan for PWU, saying the decision ensures the continued operations of the university and its schools. The Petition for Rehabilitation of PWU filed by Dr. Helena Z Benitez asked the Court to issue a Commencement Order and a Stay or Suspension Order which shall “suspend all actions or proceedings, in court or otherwise, for the enforcement of claims against PWU and against third party mortgagers.” The order, granted last week, suspends the extrajudicial sale of lands currently occupied by PWU (in Manila) and JASMS (in QC) worth well over Php1.2 Billion, which STI is seeking as a creditor of PWU as payment for the Php513 million principal loan it extended starting 2011. In return for the Php513 million peso loan, it is asking to be paid back Php1 billion, just four years later.

The Benitez Group of the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) said the move of STI Education Systems Holdings (STI) to pursue the foreclosure of the university’s properties only serves to hurt the school and threaten the welfare of the students, faculty, and employees. In a statement, PWU Media Director Lydia Benitez-Brown said “It is now very evident that STI is totally disregarding the welfare of PWU. This is what we have been saying all along, that the priorities of STI’s owner, Mr. Eusebio Tanco are really incompatible with those of the Benitez group and the PWU stakeholders,” she added.

Ms. Brown lamented that STI Holdings continued to reject attempts at an amicable settlement to repay the P223M debt assumed by Mr. Tanco when he offered to help PWU as an investor in 2011. “This foreclosure is clear proof that STI will always put business ahead of education. The action merely validates our concerns. It is an unfortunate and disappointing development but we have confidence in the fairness of the courts and that the legal system will protect the public interest of our students,” she said.

Ms. Brown said the rehabilitation plan will enable PWU to meets its legitimate obligations to its creditors without disrupting the conduct of business.

Simultaneous Earth Hour ceremonies in all SM Supermalls in the Philippines and China

For eight years now, Earth Hour have been creating tremendous impact on the global awareness of climate change. More people around the world are beginning to understand the significance of going beyond one hour to really make a difference. The Philippines, once proclaimed as the "Earth Hour Hero Country" for having the most number of participating communities, will once again try to take the lead – thanks to private companies like SM Supermalls.

All 52 SM malls around the country and six in China will simultaneously turn off their lights to show SM's continued support to the annual Earth Hour climate change awareness campaign of World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). With all SM malls hosting Earth Hour ceremonies for its respective communities, it will not be surprising if the country becomes a "hero" again for this environmental campaign.
All SM malls will provide the crowd with inspiring videos leading to the switch-off countdown. After the lights have been switched off, candles will be distributed to the crowd while an exciting lineup of entertainers will be presented for free.

SM Mall of Asia will be the host mall for the ceremony, with candidates from Ms. Earth as guests, among others, and AVP for Operations Mr. Perkin So to lead the switching off of the lights.

JrNBA / JrWNBA Presented by Alaska Not Just A Selection Process

A unique story that I witnessed all throughout the two days of watching the complete selection process of, I got a complete grasp of the how they pick the cream of the crop of Baguio.  From all of the 295 Participants on the first day trimmed down to the top 50 of the boys and girls aged 10-14 years old.

Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Determination, Action, and Being Healthy are just some of the traits that a team and an individual should have for being a Champion and starting to learn this on an earlier age is definitely recommended.  Having proper nutrition in the first place is essential in the sport of basketball and it is a good thing that Alaska is in full support always on fulfilling that duty of providing Alaska Milk and Choco Milk on the sports events like Jr.NBA/Jr.WNBA. Here is my story in pictures of the Baguio Selection Process.

This undersized little girl named Angelica caught my attention from the first day til the last day of selection. Fortunate that all the girls that tried out qualified to be part of the top 50 to qualify for the next level of the selection process where tests are harder and players are tougher. You can just imagine on competing with predictors that will eat you alive if you don't give your best on all the activities and playing your A game.

And that's what I saw in this cute little girl, not only did she perform her best but really tried hard to compete with the taller players.

Starting from day one, I can see this little girl's passion on playing the sport, although I wasn't really able to get a chance to formally interview her because of their busy training schedule because they were only given a few minutes of hydration break to drink on to the Alaska Milk/Choco Milk Booths and I don't want to stole that time away from her to recharge.

I think I'm also avoiding that not to spoil up something from her game and I specially don't want to end up with watery eyes after, because I just really got very inspired of the heart that she puts in her game and in the selection process.

From the picture above you can see that her dad carrying their youngest is all support for her and her elder sister which also qualified for the top 50.

Her determination, good listening skills and following what the coaches say are the winning traits that I saw in her and made my eyes stuck on what she will do next. Tried hassling to other players, bringing out the ball to her team mates from the side lines. I also commend her teammates that did not treat her like someone that will not contribute but rather the opposite, she tried all her efforts to be inluded in the team's scoreboard even if her shots can't barely reach the basketball board.

In the end, unfortunately she doesn't made it to the top selection to go back to Manila, but what she won is not the selection process but the heart of the people that saw her play, saw her determination and her big heart on playing the game of basketball. Among all the rest I can say that she got more fans than any of the qualifiers had.

As an added bonus, she got a consolation prize of an NBA Baller that only few people have in the Philippines and that baller came from New York that was given to one of the coaches organizing the event.

I saw how they went out from the gym and the pride that her parents have with her and her elder sister, now equipped with experience, and knowledge that she learned from the selection camp. It is heart warming that I saw them spending their time as a family in the camp cheering their two little girls. Alaska will definitely look forward on seeing her again next year for Baguio Selection Camp of JrNBA/JrWNBA presented by Alaska.

Ericsson At The Forefront Of Industry Transformation At Mobile World Congress 2015

Elie Hanna
President and Country Manager
Philippines and Pacific Islands

•    Predictions for 2015 focus on video, LTE subscriber growth and mobile broadband coverage
•    Announces hyper scale upgrade to Ericsson Cloud System —adding new software and hardware to ensure a secure cloud experience
•    Broad set of new launches support operator needs across network evolution, IT transformation and opportunities for innovation and revenue growth
Telecommunications operators are transforming their businesses and operations, according to the role they have chosen to play as either Network Developers, Service Enablers or Service Creators.
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC)  also continues to transform in its role as an ICT player, and builds on its  position in Mobile Broadband and Telecom Managed Services, while reinforcing its position in Cloud, IP, TV&Media, OSS/BSS.
“These were the key reflections of our President and CEO, Hans Vestberg, as he talked about the pace of change in the industry at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.  We predict four key changes during 2015: more people will watch streamed, on-demand video than broadcast TV on a weekly basis; video will generate half of the mobile data traffic; LTE subscriber growth will exceed 80 percent; and world mobile broadband coverage will be above 70 percent. These are all massive forces of change and open up new opportunities both in the ICT industry and in other industries,”Elie Hanna, President of Ericsson Philippines and Pacific Islands, shared.
Ericsson sees a new logic being applied across industries. “We can see a definite shift from physical products to digital services. New business models are emerging, along with new ways of solving old problems that create new efficiencies. True customer intimacy can be created using digital tools. All in all, you can see that ICT drives transformation that is really changing the game,” Hanna added.

At the recently-concluded Mobile World Congress, Ericsson showed its full range of capabilities, supporting a broad variety of customer needs. Elevennew launches were lined up with a common theme of transformation and advancing digital experiences.  These launches included: Media Delivery Network, Digital Telco Transformation, Expert Analytics 15.0, Hyperscale Cloud, Maritime ICT Cloud (from CES), Connected Traffic Cloud, App Experience Optimization, Networks Software 15B, LTE License Assisted Access (from CES), Ericsson Router 6000 Series, and the Ericsson Radio System.
Ericsson Radio System – meeting growing user demands
The new Ericsson Radio System is designed to improve app coverage for mobile device users in the face of an 8X growth in smartphone traffic between 2014 and 2020, by which time 90 % of the world's population over six years old is predicted to have a mobile phone.  The Ericsson Radio System puts operators on the road to 5G by delivering industry-leading performance – on Ericsson’s Many-Core Baseband Architecture – while drastically reducing energy requirements, site space, and install time.
Hanna said that “we consider the new Ericsson Radio System as the gold standard in radio – it’s a completely new approach on how to build radio networks on the road to 5G, with the Router 6000 Series integrating IP backhaul into the radio.”   He further clarified that the company decided not to compromise on radio performance when introducing a new smaller macro radio. “Improvements have been made in the digital radio part by using System-on-Chip technology and by introducing new advanced power amplifier architecture and technology as well as using a high integration of electronics, which also improves overall power efficiency by up to 50%. Super compact filters are used to decrease the size further, while keeping performance high.”
Ericsson cloud system gets hyperscale upgrade
Ericsson also introduced its Hyperscale Cloud Solution in MWC, to meet the growing demand for cloud agility, operational scale and associated economics.  The Hyperscale Cloud solution at the same time mitigates existing concerns around security and governance as it slows the full adoption of cloud by the world’s largest enterprises. Our latest estimates indicate that 74 percent of the largest enterprises have not fully adopted cloud, citing security and governance as a concern. The Hyperscale Cloud Solution adds new software and hardware to ensure highly governed, secure and hyperscale cloud is possible while increasing speed and control.
New products in the Ericsson Cloud System include: Ericsson HDS 8000 (Hyperscale Datacenter System), built on Intel® Rack Scale Architecture, Ericsson Secure Cloud Storage and Ericsson Continuum ®, delivering the world’s best policy-driven platform for hybrid cloud, leveraging Ericsson’s investment in Apcera.
The Ericsson HDS 8000 is the first product in the world to include Intel Rack Scale Architecture. Ericsson and Intel have been working together for a long time across a numberof technology areas, and now the two companies are moving into the data center and delivering new solution building on that relationship.
Hanna said that “technology change is exponential in the ICT industry but investment in infrastructure cannot be. With Intel and other industry leaders we are bringing a hyperscale approach across both software and hardware. We are re-inventing the future data center concept from a total architecture and economics perspective.”
Seeing the network through users’ eyes with App Experience Optimization
App Experience Optimization was also launched as a new service, bringing app experience into the mix to give operators a more valuable view of network performance.  “Operators adapt and optimize their networks for data, which long ago surpassed voice traffic. But the new reality is not just data, it’s apps. And the biggest driver of smartphone customer loyalty is network performance. In this environment, network performance KPIs need to capture our operators’ in-app experience,” Hanna explained.
The Ericsson App Experience Optimization uses tailored measurements that give operators insights about availability, accessibility, integrity, and retainability, and which in turn allows Ericsson’s network design and optimization experts to optimize and fine-tune operators’ systems where it matters most to the consumer.

Why Do I Run? - Ben Alves

This is probably the main question that you have in mind that you've been wanting to ask to runners. I just happen to stumble upon a video of a local celebrity named Ben Alves that happens to have an answer to that. His answer of course may not be the same as other runners but somehow may have some similarities to some.

After seeing this, I can probably answer the question with... Why Not Run?
Aside from the health benefits that you're going to get from it, you can also feel good that you're doing something to burn those unwanted fats, but that is just me. May not be the case for others but I hope I make some point.

The Alaska IronKids Race Series is just one of many sports development programs that Alaska conducts yearly to engage children to come out and play.

Pioneering athletic programs like the Alaska IronKids Philippines Triathlon has managed to take children away from their video game consoles, cellphones and cable TV remotes and out into the sun to swim, bike and run in triathlon races. Alaska’s sports programs hope to encourage children to get into organized sports while learning positive values like hard work, discipline, determination and teamwork. Michelin Tires Chosen For Porsche Cayman GT4 Launch

For the dynamic launch of its new Cayman GT4, Porsche AG has chosen to equip all of the cars with MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 ultra-high-performance tires: 245/35 ZR20 (91Y) TL N0 front and 295/30 ZR20 (101Y) XL TL N0 rear.

The MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyre is the latest generation of road-legal track tires designed for ultra-high performance cars. The performance levels that this tyre offers are clearly demonstrated by the fact that it is the OE fitment on recent Porsche models including the 918 Spyder and GT3.

Further evidence of the performance of this tyre is highlighted by the Nurburgring lap record set last year by the 918 Spyder which was fitted with exactly the same model of tires, albeit in a different size, that can be bought from any Official Porsche Centre.

Compared to its predecessor, the Pilot Sport Cup+, the Pilot Sport Cup 2 lasts up to 50 per cent longer on track and also offers faster lap times* due to technology developed in motorsport, at races such as the Le Mans 24 hours. Plus, these improvements in performance are achieved with no compromises in other areas, and are an example of Michelin’s Total Performance strategy.

The MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 combines Bi-Compound technology, which involves the use of different rubber compounds on the inner and outer sections of the tread with Track Variable Contact Patch 3.0, which is an innovation that optimizes pressure in the tyre's contact patch so the same amount of rubber is always in contact with the road or track, whether driving in a straight line or cornering. To ensure the Cayman GT4 is prepared for difficult winter driving conditions, Michelin is the sole supplier of the winter tyre option for the car:

Oasis Garden Cafe - Solaire Resort and Casino

For desserts or if you just feel like you're craving for something sweet then this is what I will recommend. One of our stops in Zomato Foodcrawl.

Oasis Garden Cafe is a refreshing centerpiece to the spacious Sky Tower atrium. Bedecked in elaborate bird’s nest interiors, this restaurant is highlighted by a transparent glass roof that brings life to a multihued backdrop of foliage, blooms, and cascading water features.
From morning until early evening, Oasis Garden Cafe offers a wide selection of coffee, tea, traditional snacks, and artisanal finger sandwiches. By sundown, the vibe turns into that of a stylish lounge that offers a full complement of cocktails and drinks served with the usual Solaire panache.

We got Red Velvet Cake with vanilla mascaporne filling and fresh strawberries, Layers of almond caramel filled with caramell butterscotch parfait and roasted almonds, Butter Scotch Macaron Cake and Caramel Cheese Cake. Of all the three pastries I must say that the sweetness are not very overpowering but rather just enough to satisfy your sweet tooth so I'm sure that even diabetics will love it. By the way, before anything else, the desserts that was served to us was not part of their regular menu except for caramel cheese cake so I posted what you can find from their display instead.

And to match those sweet desserts we had Oasis Blend Tea(Oasis Specialty) and Earl Grey(Aromatic Combination of Earl Grey and Vanilla Cream). I'm already sold out on the Ambiance of this Cafe and like it even more when I got a taste of their desserts.

The Voice Kids Season 2 Goes to Starmall

After the stunning success of The Voice Kids (TVK) Season 1 and The Voice franchise as a whole, it isn’t surprising that  is already laying the groundwork for the next batch of talented young singers in the country.
The reality singing competition is open to children between ages 7 to 13. Each kid shall prepare two to four songs in the audition. No need to bring tapes – the songs will be sung in a capella to better gauge the singing talent of the participants.
Auditions will be done in different Starmall branches, as per schedule:
March 15 – Starmall Alabang, 9 to 5 PM
March 15 – Starmall San Jose Del Monte, 9 to 5 PM

From there, the ABS-CBN reality show judges will be weeding out contestants and picking the best of the best for their team. No doubt, the audition is just part one of the long, gruelling – yet highly rewarding process of being the next grand champion of the The Voice Kids.
The Voice Kids Season 1’s winner, Lyca Gairanod, won a recording contract with one of the best in the industry today, her career currently enjoying a fast rise with MCA Universal.
Along with that, she and her family are now enjoying their new home in Camella Tierra Nevada. Camella, the biggest homebuilder in the country, was one of the major sponsors of the show.
Additional prizes of Lyca include 1 million cash prize, a trust fund, home appliance and music showcases, and many more.
Even months after the airing of the TVK season 1, Lyca, and the other top contestants, namely, Darren Espanto, Juan Karlos Labajo and Darlene Vibares, continues to make waves and creates their own mark in the local entertainment industry, a testament to the high publicity the show has garnered.
According to Kantar Media, TVK Season 1 was the most-watched show nationwide in 2014, garnering an average rating of 34.5%.
Last season’s show was hosted by Luiz Manzano and Alex Gonzaga, and the second season promises the same setup. The team of judges in Season 1: Sarah Geronimo, Lea Salonga, and Bamboo Mañalac may also be part of this successful show’s second season.
During its three-month run (May to July 2014), The Voice Kids dominated social media with the top contestants trending in social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. More of the same are expected for Season 2 as judges embark on blind auditions and coach their picks to become better singers and performers in general.
The Voice Kids is based on a Dutch reality TV Show running under the same name. The Philippine reboot of the show will start airing soon after auditions. Stay updated for further TVK audition schedules.
