PH and India to Boost Trade and Investment

The Philippines-India Joint Working Group on Trade and Investments Co-Chairs DTI Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo and Ministry of Commerce Joint Secretary Anant Swarup with Ambassadors Ramon S. Bagatsing, Jr. and Shambu S. Kumaran with some members of the Philippine and Indian delegation.

Manila, Philippines –The Philippines and India successfully concluded the virtual 13thMeeting of the Joint Working Group on Trade and Investments (JWGTI) on 17 September 2020. The JWGTI was led byUndersecretary for Industry Development and Trade Policy,Dr. Ceferino S. Rodolfo, and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce of India Anant Swarup.

In the said meeting,discussions focused on initiatives tofoster synergies in various sectors such as textiles, electronics (Smart manufacturing and digital technologies, IC design and electronics system design manufacturing), IT-BPM (telemedicine, health information management, software development and IT solutions and online learning), energy, and agriculture.

Recognized as the “pharmacy of the world,” India was also encouraged to consider opportunities in the manufacture of active pharma ingredients, vaccines and essential medicines and establishment of R&D facilities for herbal medicines.

According to Undersecretary Rodolfo “the Philippines still has a traditional view of India. This mindset has to change given the vast opportunities for collaboration that remain untapped.” Joint Secretary Swarup shared the same view saying that “both sides share in each other’s total trade is negligible, from only about 0.3 – 1%, hence the full potential of the relations is yet to be reached.”

Relevant trade and investment promotion agencies from both sides are now gearing up to pursue concrete initiatives for an enhanced promotion of trade and investment between the two countries.

In 2019, India was the Philippines’ 14thtop trading partner (out of 226), 17thexport market (out of 220), and 13thimport supplier (out of 194) with total trade of USD 2.4 billion. India was also the 8thlargest source of approved investments at Php 915.64 million in 2019.

The JWGTI serves as DTI’s dedicated platform to discuss trade and investment issues, proposals for economic cooperation, and concerns on the business environment. The 13thJWGTI meeting was attended by various business organizations and was graced by their Excellencies Ramon S. Bagatsing, Jr., Ambassador of the Philippines to India and Shambhu S. Kumaran, Ambassador of India to the Philippines.

DTI 4-A Grants Livelihood Support to Micro and Small Entreps in Ternate, Cavite

Livelihood support outpours in Ternate, Cavite as the Department of Trade and Industry Region 4-A, through its Livelihood Seeding Program – Negosyo Serbisyo sa Barangay, granted starter kits to 25 qualified micro and small entrepreneurs on 24 September 2020.

The beneficiaries were awarded P200,000 worth of starter kits, which included twenty-two (22) sari-sari store packages, one (1) auto repair shop package, one (1) goto and tapsi food house package, and one (1) eatery package. 

The LSP-NSB is a program of the DTI that allows a wider reach of business development assistance by bringing government services closer to the people through partnerships between relevant local government units and DTI officials. Through Barangay Development Councils (BDCs), the DTI shall help capacitate Barangay personnel to provide basic business advisory or information dissemination services to MSMEs in the locality.

DTI 4-A Director Marilou Q. Toledo sought commitment from the beneficiaries that they sustain their chosen livelihood package.

“We have our Negosyo Centers all over the province of Cavite to inform our beneficiaries and the public about our programs and projects. Our Business Counsellors will be able to assist and guide them on how to start, sustain, and level-up their business,” said Toledo.

Ternate Mayor Lamberto D. Bambao thanked the DTI 4-A for the project and expressed his hope for more livelihood projects like this in the future.

As of September 2020, DTI 4-A has already distributed starter kits to 135 beneficiaries in the province of Cavite.

In a landmark event hailed as a strong and successful finish amid the pandemic, Century Tuna Superbods 2020 named nursing student and ESL instructor Samantha Ashley Lo and fitness coach and professional model Sam Ajdani as the Century Tuna Everybod Superbod title holders. The most anticipated health and fitness event of the year was also a momentous occasion as it set the standards for future online events in the new normal. 

Held at the Blue Leaf Cosmopolitan in Quezon City, the finals event followed strict adherence to the FDCP-DOH-DOLE safety protocols for film and audio-visual shoots.

“We needed to rise up to the challenge. We knew it was going to be tough but we stayed focused and if we’re able to pull this off successfully then at least we are able to provide a template for the industry to learn from and use. We soldiered on despite the challenges to show that it can be done,” said Century Pacific Food Inc. EVP & COO Greg Banzon. He also added, “It’s important to stage the event to provide inspiration and a good benchmark for the country to put health, wellness and fitness as the top priority.”

The success of the event amid the pandemic made their victory even more memorable for both Samantha (27) and Sam (30). Sam, who is a professional commercial model, admitted that one of the most challenging part of the competition was trying to stay healthy given the restrictions of the pandemic. Meanwhile, Samantha, who is a former Miss Grand International Philippines winner, had to strengthen her focus and remain creative in her home workouts, even when she could not go the gym. Their persistence and commitment to stay strong and focused paid off when they were proclaimed winners of the biggest health and fitness competition in the country.

Samantha and Sam bested 25 other Superbods candidates and will each tak home Php 500,000 tax-free cash and other amazing prizes. Both winners passed rigorous digital challenges required during the competition to emerge as the new ambassadors of Century Tuna Superbods 2020—health and fitness advocates who are passionate in promoting health and wellness as an everyday commitment especially during these trying times. They are also exceptional individuals who remain optimistic and believe in getting back up again even after falling so many times.

Meanwhile, the runners-up were Superbod 2020 Stunner Candice Ramos and Superbod 2020 Ageless Erie Matic. Other candidates who took home special awards were Shirley Garcia, Zai Ebido, Enzo Bonoan, Samantha Purvor, Philippe Magalona, Nelson Banzuela, Key Trajano, Albert Lorenzo, and Grace Del Rosario.

The 25 finalists were all strong contenders, showcasing inspiring traits and skills to encourage themselves and their fellow Filipinos to keep going, and remain healthy and strong during these trying times.

The finalists were judged by a distinguished panel of judges. Joining Century Pacific Food Inc. EVP & COO Greg Banzon, Century Tuna marketing director Carlo Endaya, triathlete and SEA Games gold medalist Nikko Huelgas, GMA Network senior assistant vice president for alternative productions Gigi Santiago-Lara, Isabelle Daza, Alice Dixson, Sarah Lahbati, Ina Raymundo, and DJ Toni Tony.

The health and fitness competition was relaunched last July 25 with a more inclusive and relevant #StayStrongPilipinas theme. To signal its resumption, Century Tuna released a rousing video via its official Facebook page (, featuring Century Tuna celebrity ambassadors Nadine Lustre and Alden Richards with the Superbods finalists urging everyone to stay strong and to continue pursuing their dreams of a healthier future through proper diet and exercise.
