ASUS Collaborates with Country’s Premier Icons for Design and Style for #ZenLooks

ASUS Philippines teams up with world-renowned industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue, together with the trendsetting duo of David Guison and Arisse de Santos, for this regional competition that offers Filipinos the one-of-a-kind chance to be the designer of their own ZenFone 2 case

ASUS Philippines has joined forces with the crème de la crème of the country’s creative elite to encourage more Filipinos to showcase the diverse beauty of local culture, as well as their unique eye for design, for the #ZenLooks competition.

Internationally acclaimed and multi-awarded industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue and style authorities David Guison and Arisse de Santos are onboard to help amplify the call for their fellow Filipinos to join in by creating their own designs for this competition, which invites individuals to submit an original case design for the ZenFone 2 inspired by the Philippines’ national colors.

Nature’s most captivating hues inspire Cobonpue
Fresh from accolades received for the outstanding venue design he conceptualized for the recently-concluded and highly-publicized APEC 2015, Cobonpue focuses his attention on the shades and shapes of nature as his design inspirations for #ZenLooks.

On partnering with ASUS Philippines for the competition, he says, “I feel humbled to be a part of a global movement that allows Filipinos to express their creative identities through a personal must-have that accompanies them in their day to day. Our mobile phones, and what we do with them, say a lot about who we are and what we love.”

Admitting his personal affinity for the ZenFone 2, he declares, “It’s the perfect phone for this campaign. As a designer, the ZenFone 2 allows me to express my personal aesthetic. It’s very important that a device latches on to its owner’s views. And as for its performance, I like that it doesn’t compromise speed and promises such a rich photography experience for anyone who appreciates style.”

He concludes, “#ZenLooks is consistent with my personal advocacy of creating original and unique designs while promoting local culture. It’s a collaborative effort between the ASUS team and aspiring artists to produce an art piece inspired by the Philippine’s iconic elements.”

Guison pays tribute to one of Ilocos Norte’s most scenic spots
As his way of reminding himself that the Philippines has so much to offer in terms of beauty and travel experiences, Guison zoomed in on the Kapupurawan rock formation in Ilocos Norte, admittedly also one of his favorite scenes, for his case design.  A travel enthusiast himself, he reveals, “I always feel the need to document everything, so this image is a note to myself that there are 7,107 islands in the Philippines to explore.”

Having previously worked with ASUS as an intern, Guison shares, “I am very honored to be working with ASUS again as I have a deep appreciation for the brand. The ZenLooks campaign inspired me so much as well since I love travelling and capturing everything – which also makes the ZenFone 2, with its superb camera, a great phone match for the campaign.” And with his many blog followers, this stylephile is likewise excited to encourage others to express their own brand of creativity through the competition. “My readers are very talented and they have a keen eye for style, so I'm sure they will rock this design contest by ASUS. Plus, it's not every day you get to collaborate with such an established brand.”

It’s a play of watercolors for de Santos
The lifestyle blogger harnessed her love for watercolors in her ZenFone 2 case design. Commenting on the strong platform the competition provides for creative self-expression, de Santos says, “#ZenLooks is a great springboard for Filipinos to showcase their skills and creativity, not to mention pay tribute to the beauty of our country for the whole world to see. It also doesn’t hurt that they’re encouraged to do this with the ZenFone 2, which is classy and sleek and can match any personality or mood.”
She encourages her readers to add their personal touch to their case designs. “Envision what you want for the final look, and embrace the opportunity to use your creativity to show everyone why the Philippines is worth experiencing.”

Road to #ZenLooks: Incredible Catwalk featuring Kim Jones
Following a global introduction that launched an exciting design partnership with Italian vlogger and YouTube personality Marzia Bisognin (better known as her handle “CutiePieMarzia”), #ZenLooks likewise took off with a regional prelude highlighting a collaboration with Filipina-British fashion icon Kim Jones, which saw the popular blogger and style connoisseur going on a whirlwind 7-photo sartorial journey across seven countries in Southeast Asia in seven days with ASUS to unravel the region’s ultimate fashion story using the ZenFone 2.

Cobonpue, Guison, and de Santos all laud ASUS’ choice of Jones as the campaign’s regional ambassador. “Kim Jones as a style icon seamlessly displays what it means to travel in style. She reflects the caliber and passion of this beautiful campaign.” Guison agrees: “Kim has consistently produced quality content for her brand and she outdid herself yet again with this campaign. I enjoyed following her adventures with the ASUS team. One day they were in the busy mosques of India, the next day they were in the floating markets of Vietnam. It was exhilarating!” De Santos adds: “Her classy and sophisticated style sense makes her the perfect fit for the Incredible Catwalk.”

ZenLooks Week 1 Winner
Over 4,000 design submissions from the Philippines so far
With influential and talented Filipinos the likes of Cobonpue, Guison, and de Santos now joining the campaign, ASUS Philippines Marketing Manager Jamie Zaldivar is confident that the competition will see an increasing representation of Filipino creative minds.

“To date, we have already received over 4,000 amazing case design submissions from the Philippines,” she says. “We have always experienced great support from Filipinos every time we launch global and regional campaigns, and this is certainly no different. It’s a great testament of how we as a people are passionate about being part of a creative movement.”
With just 2 weeks to go before the competition comes to a close, Zaldivar calls on Filipinos to get creative and join in. “Not only will you get to express yourself and your love for your country – you’ll also get to share it with the world. Plus, awesome prizes from ASUS Philippines are up at stake.” These include a ZenFone 2 deluxe (worth Php17,995) and the limited edition case designed by CutiePieMarzia for weekly winners; and, if chosen as the Grand Winner, the chance to collaborate with the ASUS design team to have his or her winning case design manufactured.
ZenLooks Week 2 Winner

Zaldivar concludes, “We hope that Kenneth, David, and Arisse’s designs will inspire other Filipinos to keep the entries coming. We are so excited to have these three onboard as together, they represent and advocate the best of Filipino design, style, and culture, culled from their individual perspectives and experiences.”
Deadline for submission for the #ZenLooks design challenge is December 6. To join and create your entry, visit the #ZenLooks Facebook Application at https://asuscampaign.com/zenlooks/ph/.

Quezon City Monument Turns Orange

Quezon City will “Orange” its symbolic icon – the Quezon City Monument, reflecting orange lights every evening from November 25 to December 12. The city stands one with the United Nations Women (UN Women) and the rest of the nation during the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women.

This year the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, or UN Women, aims to highlight the issue of street harassment and all forms of sexual violence that women experience as they move about in the city – using public transport, lining up in terminals, going to markets/malls, and even just walking home in their own neighborhoods.

Whether due to shame or fear, women traditionally ignore and keep silent about catcalls, stalking, repeated harassment for their numbers, male public exposure, rubbing or groping (panghihipo) inside the MRT/ jeepneys, even bearing indecent language being yelled at them by men as they walk by.

This is why the Quezon City government has partnered with UN Women to implement the Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Initiative. QC is the first city in Metro Manila to join over 24 cities around the world in the programme to stop street harassment and sexual violence against women in public spaces with the support of the Spanish Cooperation for International Development (AECID).

During this period, UN Women also launches the hashtag #FreeFromFear as part of the social media campaign to raise awareness that all women have the right to be free from violence AND to be free from fear of violence as they go to work, school, participate in recreation and community life, and enjoy public spaces.

Their Facebook page features a photo blog and testimonies of women in Metro Manila who have experienced street harassment, a celebrity ‘fan sign’ collage, a community poll, and many more resources on preventing and responding to sexual harassment and violence against women in public spaces.

Visit the page and join the Quezon City government and UN Women in their call – We want Safe Cities where Women are #FreeFromFear!

According to Sparta Calisthenics Academy’s consultant and designer Ton Vergel de Dios, “Calisthenics or training with body weight exercises is not only fun and challenging but also beneficial to strength, and in achieving that Spartan 3D abs look.”

“What sets calisthenics apart from the usual weight training is that, one gets to master moving the body through space and is able to use body weight exercises as opposed to external weight to gain strength.  One is also able to work on the smaller muscles, which gives calisthenics practitioners that 'ripped' look.”

Vergel de Dios added, “We put up the academy because with all the different scientific approaches to fitness, it was obvious that simple progressions (provided by calisthenics) could give most people the results they wanted.  With Sparta Battle of the Bars, we can expect to catch a glimpse of the calisthenics and street workout lifestyle which is quickly making its way into the limelight here in the Philippines. Hopefully this will inspire more people to try calisthenics and train like Spartans.”

Registration for the event starts at 12:30 p.m. on November 29.  There will also be a Food Market curated by Jj Yulo at 4 p.m.  Bands such as Mayonnaise, The Brat Pack, Hansom, Jensen and the Flips and Cygnet will also be performing at 6 p.m.

Registration fee is at P100 for one-on-one reps and P200 for tricks tournament.  Event is free for all non-participants.

Porsche and Michelin win the LM GTE Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Cups

The 6 Hours of Bahrain saw the Stuttgart firm take the top prize in LM GTE Pro, too. Although the N°92 Porsche 911 RSR of Pilet/Makowiecki failed to figure well in qualifying, it went on to dominate the race. Patrick Pilet, who was nominated to start, overtook several cars to appear in front after half-an-hour. Fellow Frenchman Frédéric Makowiecki then finished off the job to collect the win ahead of the N°51 Ferrari 458 Italia (Bruni/Vilander) which failed to match the lap times of the German machine.

Rigon/Calado (N°71 Ferrari 458 Italia) were initially slightly off the pace but they fought back to pass the Aston Martins before a pit-stop problem put paid to their remaining chances of winning the Drivers’ title and clinching the top Manufacturers’ prize for the Italian make.

The winner of the 2015 FIA Drivers’ Cup was Richard Lietz (N°91 Porsche 919 RSR), even though the consistent Austrian could manage no better than fifth in Bahrain.

The Rise of Female Entrepreneurs in the Emerging Markets

Men traditionally rule the startup world, particularly when it comes to technology startups. However, an increasing number of women entrepreneurs are driving business innovation in the Philippines and across the Asia-Pacific region.

While there are still gender challenges, women in the emerging markets are overcoming obstacles to break through the glass ceiling. As these developing countries advance technologically, and become increasingly startup-savvy, women are helping to revolutionize the business landscapes in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

And it’s not only individual businesses that are affected by the presence of women at C-level. According to a recent report from EY, tapping into women’s economic potential could have the equivalent effect of an additional one billion people in business and in the workforce.

From managing directors, to frontend developers, co-founders to product managers, global real estate portal, Lamudi, employs women from all over the world to lead its international teams. Lamudi Philippines was founded by young female entrepreneur Jacqueline van den Ende, who was invited to speak at the Asia CEO Young Leaders’ Summit earlier this year.

According to van den Ende: “Women are standing up and demanding the global business stage. I believe that as women in a male-dominated environment, we are in a position of strength; we have the power to bring something unique to the table, to create a motivated and collaborative company culture, and to educate and encourage other women to embrace entrepreneurship.”

In the Middle East, significant change is underway. Currently, over a third of startups are founded by women - with females fighting against common stereotypes to achieve business success through female-run companies. These women are independent, young, well-educated, and increasingly tech-savvy. One such example of this is WOMENA, a Dubai-based network which comprises high net worth female investors.

Meanwhile, in Africa, Lamudi has recently appointed Akua Nyame-Mensah as the new managing director of Lamudi Nigeria. Akua is currently the MD of Lamudi Ghana, and will continue to drive the development of the company in both countries.

Female entrepreneurs in Kenya are becoming increasingly high-profile. As a result, programs have been put in place to support future growth, including Akirachix, co-founded by a group of 12 women who teach girls about coding and entrepreneurship. The Kenyan Ministry of Devolution and Planning has even launched the Women Enterprise Fund, to support women as they start and develop their businesses.

“The business world in the emerging markets is changing every day. There is huge potential for women to break down barriers and overcome the obstacles to success, whether in technology, real estate, finance, or any other male-dominated sector. In so many developing countries, well-educated, tech-savvy women are stepping up to drive innovation and business growth,” concluded van den Ende.

6 Highly Urbanized Cities with Homes Under 1 Million Pesos

Many assume that buying a home in a highly urbanized city (defined by the National Statistics Office as having a minimum population of 200,000 and an annual income of at least Php50 million) is expensive. But it looks like this is not the case. According to data from MyProperty.ph, the following are highly urbanized Philippine cities that boast urban yet laidback lifestyle, great culinary tradition, buoyant economies, and most importantly, affordable real estate.

DUMAGUETE CITY

Dumaguete City, nicknamed the City of Gentle People, is located in the province of Negros Oriental. This city is accessible by air via Sibulan Airport (aka Dumaguete Airport), which is located in the general area of the city. If traveling by sea, it can be reached via daily ferry transportation to and from neighboring Cebu Province.

This city is also the home of Asia’s first American private university, Silliman University, which makes Dumaguete a popular college town in the Visayas region.

According to the 2014 Retire Overseas Index released by Live and Invest Overseas, Dumaguete is one of seven best places to retire in the world. The index, which was cited in an article published in Forbes magazine, singled out Dumaguete’s beaches, affordable real estate, and good health care facilities are major draws.

So if one plans to relocate in Dumaguete, he will be delighted to know that houses for sale in the city are some of the most affordable. MyProperty.ph data shows that depending on the area, a two-bedroom house may cost as low as Php410,000.

DAVAO CITY

The Durian Capital of the Philippines is the most populous city in Mindanao and is also the home of Mount Apo, the Philippines’ highest peak. Davao is also often cited as one of the country’s safest cities. It can be accessed via sea and land as transportation is widely available in and around the city.

The city has a lot to offer to both tourists and residents. Aside from Mount Apo, Davao City has parks and beaches for outdoor fun activities, such as extreme water sports and trekking. Also nicknamed the “Fruit Basket of the Philippines,” Davao City is the island’s leading exporter of mangoes, mangosteens, papayas, and the notable Davao fruit, durian.

Despite being Mindanao’s business capital, Davao City still offers some of the most affordable real estate in the country. A two-bedroom home can be had for as low as Php450,000.

The capital of Negros Occidental, Bacolod City is billed as the “Best Place to Live in the Philippines” by MoneySense Magazine.

Dubbed the City of Smiles, it has a modern airport , good infrastructure, and has also been declared as a Center of Excellence by the Department of Science and Technology. But these don’t take away the city’s heritage and character. Bacolod still boasts heritage homes of the sugar barons of the yesteryears, while some of its prime areas are being converted to gleaming shopping malls and BPO centers.

In Bacolod, a starting family may purchase a two-bedroom house for as low as Php550,000.

Dubbed the City of Hot Springs, Calamba is a popular weekend resort destination among residents of Metro Manila. It also helps that the city is at the southern terminus of the South Luzon Expressway, making commute from the capital very easy.

Tourists flock to Calamba all year round. Apart from its hot springs and resorts, Calamba is also home to the second tallest Rizal monument, which was built at the national hero’s childhood home. Another city landmark relevant to Rizal’s life that still stands today is the St. John the Baptist Parish Church, where the National Hero was christened. The Calambanga, a huge claypot or banga in Filipino, stands at the city plaza to represent where the name “Calamba” originated from. A more modern tourist attraction, the Republ1c Wakepark in NUVALI, serves as a respite for extreme sports enthusiasts.

Calamba has plenty of residential areas and subdivisions. If one would like to live in a two-bedroom home that has a beautiful view, he may acquire one for as low as Php605,000.

ANGELES CITY

A city renowned for its culinary tradition, Pampanga’s Angeles City is also famous for the Clark Freeport Zone, a former U.S. military installation that was turned into an economic zone after the Americans left in the early 1990s. What remained after the U.S. base shut down was a city with an international airport, waterparks, BPO centers, condos, and some of the largest townships to be built in the Philippines. Add to this the fact that Angeles is accessible from Metro Manila via the North Luzon Expressway, making commute to and from the capital fast and easy.

Angeles City’s newfound boom is fueling its real estate market. However, housing here is still quite affordable. A two-bedroom home in Angeles can be had for as low as Php650,000.

ILOILO CITY

The capital city of Iloilo Province, it has its own airport, a buoyant local economy, colorful festivals, and now mixed-use townships by national real estate developers.

Iloilo also has international and domestic seaports and fish ports that are heavily used for international trading of fish and marine products. These products supply fresh catch to region’s largest supermarkets, hotels and restaurants.

Native delicacies and cultural, historical and natural tourist destinations await future residents of Iloilo. However, the city is not all fun and no business. More and more BPO companies are setting up shop in Iloilo, drawn by the city’s high number of college graduates.

These developments have led to the city’s real estate boom. Aside from the aforementioned mixed-use township by Megaworld, the city boasts traditional horizontal housing in gated communities or subdivisions. A two-bedroom home can be bought for as low as PHP 980,000.
