Sparta Presents The Biggest Calisthenics Event in the Country, Hari ng Baras
SPARTA Calisthenics Academy (SCA), which is housed in the hectare-wide sports facility - SPARTA along Pioneer Avenue in Mandaluyong City, is set to present another groundbreaking calisthenics event in the country, called HARI NG BARAS.
SPARTA Calisthenics Academy created the biggest gathering of calisthenics practitioners and followers last year, when it launched its SPARTA Battle of the Bars event. The event saw an attendance of 300 followers and participants. It sparked an interest in the fitness industry after the first calisthenics event was held in the country, and this year, it expects to have a “bigger and better event”, this according to Amanda Fernandez, owner of SPARTA.
“Since last year’s event, I feel more people have practiced their endurance, strength, and creativity. I can't wait to see how the past contestants improved since the last calisthenics competition. We may even have those who couldn't make it last year finally come by this year”, Fernandez continues.
SPARTA Calisthenics Academy’s Founder Ton Vergel de Dios says, “SPARTA Hari ng Baras this year is a level up from SPARTA Battle of the Bars last November. This year, a mobile bar set up will be used outdoors for the event. The rig was designed specifically for showcasing skills and strength with bodyweight movements.”
“Competitors from last year's battle of the bars can expect tougher competition this year at SPARTA Hari ng Baras. There will be athletes coming from all over the country including Baguio and Iloilo”, Vergel de Dios adds.
Participants who are part of Philippine Street Workout and Calisthenics Association or PSWCA may register for free while non-members may easily join the group or pay a small fee to join the reps battles. 1x1 and 2x2 skills battles registration is nearly complete and those interested may message SPARTA Philippines on Facebook.
Prizes at stake include cash prize, gear from 2xu and Vamos socks. Event sponsors include Vita Coco and Gatorade.
SPARTA is located along Pioneer Street in Mandaluyong City. For more information, please call 6553799 or 0977-7634402.

Former Ballerina Cathee Roslovtsev Opens Dance Studio at Sparta in Mandaluyong
Former Ballerina Cathee Roslovtsev has decided to fulfil her life-long dream of putting up a dance studio, which caters to children and adults alike. The Elan Ballet and Pilates Studio is located at the second floor of SPARTA in Mandaluyong. Formerly with the Philippine Ballet Theatre and presently an artistic council member of The Philippine Ballet Theatre, she will be using the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet training method for her ballet classes.
The training method is a 12-year training method for the child, from 5-17 years old, wherein yearly, somebody from Australia will give the exam, to see if the child can move on to the next level.
Apart from Classical Ballet, she also offers Baby Ballet classes for kids from 3-5 years old, Mommy and Me Ballet classes for kids who are between 2-4 years old, while her Pre-primary Ballet classes on the other hand, targets kids who are at least 5 years of age.
According to Cathee, the values that kids can learn from ballet include, “Camaraderie, obedience, discipline, patience and perseverance. All of these values can be learned while mastering the various techniques, like doing the pirouette.”
She also stresses the importance of learning Pilates for ballet students.
Cathee, who is also a Certified Pilates Instructor, will also be offering Pilates with machine and mat. “Pilates and dance go hand-in-hand. Because with Pilates, the exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and it rebalances the muscles around the joint”, she says.
Cathee, who is very dedicated to her craft, was also very hands-on with the construction of the Dance Studio. For instance, she had to install a special kind of flooring that helps cushion the knees and the joints, so when you do your jumps and your leaps, you don’t get injured.
Apart from Classical Ballet, The Dance Studio also offers Jazz, Street Dance, Tap, Salsa, Zumba, Pilates and Yoga for Special Kids. She also has customized programs for her dance clients, Cathee adds, “Because each person has a diff body type. So programs will be customised depending on what the client needs.”

Sparta Presents the First Ever Battle of the Bars Calisthenics Competition
SPARTA, Sports and Recreational Training Arena, recently opened the first and only calisthenics academy in the country. It is proud to present the first ever Sparta Battle of the Bars Calisthenics Competition.
Calisthenics, which is slowing making waves in Asia, uses body weight movements and has benefits which include increasing strength, creativity, balance, power, endurance, and of course, aesthetics.
Sparta has been at the forefront of this movement in the Philippines. After opening the first indoor calisthenics academy this month, it will now put to test the strength and endurance of the best calisthenics practitioners in the country on November 29, 2015 for the Sparta Battle of the Bars.
According to Sparta Calisthenics Academy’s consultant and designer Ton Vergel de Dios, “Calisthenics or training with body weight exercises is not only fun and challenging but also beneficial to strength, and in achieving that Spartan 3D abs look.”
“What sets calisthenics apart from the usual weight training is that, one gets to master moving the body through space and is able to use body weight exercises as opposed to external weight to gain strength. One is also able to work on the smaller muscles, which gives calisthenics practitioners that 'ripped' look.”
Vergel de Dios added, “We put up the academy because with all the different scientific approaches to fitness, it was obvious that simple progressions (provided by calisthenics) could give most people the results they wanted. With Sparta Battle of the Bars, we can expect to catch a glimpse of the calisthenics and street workout lifestyle which is quickly making its way into the limelight here in the Philippines. Hopefully this will inspire more people to try calisthenics and train like Spartans.”
Registration for the event starts at 12:30 p.m. on November 29. There will also be a Food Market curated by Jj Yulo at 4 p.m. Bands such as Mayonnaise, The Brat Pack, Hansom, Jensen and the Flips and Cygnet will also be performing at 6 p.m.
Registration fee is at P100 for one-on-one reps and P200 for tricks tournament. Event is free for all non-participants.

Sparta Opens Calisthenics Academy - Free Trial for Month of November
Sports and Recreational Training Arena, also known as SPARTA, recently opened the first and only calisthenics academy in the country.
SPARTA has a sprawling space of almost 10,000 square meters right smack in the middle of Mandaluyong City. The entire facility is being developed phase by phase. Early this year, it initially opened the country's first and only FIFA 1-star certified indoor football field.
Its owner, TV host and football player Amanda Fernandez, says, “We envision a sports facility which turns ordinary individuals into modern-day Spartans wherein they can overcome their own limitations through constant practice and focused training that challenge them beyond their limits.”
The Sparta Calisthenics Academy was launched this November with the aim of training athletes and non-athletes using bodyweight movements. The benefits of calisthenics include being able to build Spartan-like strength, power, balance, endurance, proprioception, and of course, aesthetics.
Calisthenics comes from the Greek words, "Kalos" and "Sthenos” which means beauty and strength.
The 'KALOS' program is designed to build one’s physique like a Spartan. This includes a strong and defined abdominal region, shoulders, arms, legs, back and chest. Whether for fat loss or muscle building, this program focuses on building the body through specialized bodyweight exercises tailored to any fitness level from beginner to advanced.
The 'STHENOS' program, on the other hand, focuses on gaining strength through the fundamental calisthenics movements and using progressions to get the most out of each exercise every session. Beginners start with easier variations of the fundamental exercises and advanced athletes perfect their techniques on more difficult variations of the same basic movements and progress to more advanced movements.
Free trial is available for the month of November. For bookings, please call 6553799
