Philippine Veterans Bank urges bike enthusiasts to join ‘Ride for Valor’

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) today urged bike enthusiasts to join the “Ride for Valor,” a non-competitive bike ride to be held on August 28 to honor Filipino soldiers who defended the country against Japanese forces during World War II. Mike Villa-Real, PVB vice president for communications, said the event was supposed to be held last April, but due to pandemic restrictions and the elections, it has been postponed to August 28 to coincide with the National Heroes Day and commemorate the bank’s 30th Anniversary.

“Through this event, we commemorate the unsung and unknown heroes of World War II and the Bataan Death March who bravely fought and sacrificed their lives for our country and freedom,” he said.

Villa-Real explained that the bike ride aims to raise funds for the Filipino-American Memorial Endowment (FAME), a non-government organization that maintains the kilometer markers of the Bataan Death March from Mariveles, Bataan to Capas, Tarlac. At least 10 kilometer markers in Mariveles and at least 4 in Limay have to be relocated due to road widening.

He said the event’s format for this year is Gran Fondo or “Big Ride,” and each participant will have a “passport” that they need to bring to three stops: Mt. Samat in Bataan, San Fernando Train/Water Station in Pampanga, and the Death March Memorial Shrine in Capas, Tarlac.

Each stop will have optional destinations such as the Stotsenburg Park near the Clark Parade Grounds and the Bamban Museum of History in Tarlac, where participants will be receive their ride kits.

Villa-Real said a 12-hour cut-off will be implemented during the event, and participants may finish the entire route or join along the stops.

“There will be a mechanic to help those who will experience mechanical issues and roving marshals to monitor the progress of the participants. Support vehicles are allowed, but participants should not ride the vehicle unless they decide to withdraw from the bike ride,” he noted.
Those interested in joining the bike ride may register online at and pay P550 per individual and P2,100 per group of five persons. Only bikes with brakes are allowed in the event, and participants must be fully vaccinated.

Each participant will be given a bib number, a bike sticker, an event shirt, a loot bag, and commemorative patches on the day of the event.

PVB is a commercial bank owned by World War II veterans and their families. As part of its charter, PVB allocates 20% of its annual net income for the benefit of its shareholders.

Around 80,000 Filipino and American soldiers and prisoners of war were forced by the Japanese military to march 69 miles from Bataan to Tarlac during World War II.

Only some 54,000 persons reached the camp, and around 20,000 died due to starvation, dehydration, diseases, and the brutality of Japanese captors.

The event is in partnership with Shimano, Air21, Panahon TV, and Booster-C.

Singer and producer Jackson Wang announces the release date for his sophomore album MAGIC MAN, out September 9th via TEAM WANG Records/88rising Records/Warner Records/RYCE MUSIC GROUP. The album will feature 10 tracks including the previously released “Blow” and new single “Cruel, out now with the accompanying music video with creative & movement directed by Jackson Wang, choreography by Jackson Wang and Vinh Nguyen, and directed by Rich Lee (Billie Eilish, Eminem, Lana del Rey). Both tracks brim with the energy of “Magic Man,” the seductive message to let go and give in.

Cruel” is produced by Cambo (Doja Cat), Floyd Fuji (Kanye West, Anderson .Paak), Roland Gajate Garcia (Camila Cabello, Kanye West), and LOUALLDAY. Listen to “Cruel” here and watch the video here.

Jackson comments, "Cruel is a very special record for me. It really set the precedence for where the narrative of the album needed to go and sound.” He further states, “We were working on many records before this one, but we were struggling to find a clear direction. Cruel is like a manifestation of the environments and hurdles we had to overcome at the time. Every time we felt we were getting close, something slips past us and it all felt so far away. Once ‘Cruel’ came into our hands, it all made sense for us, it was like a beautiful mental breakdown.

Cruel’s grunge, and raw sound is exactly the perfect representation of the distorted and warped story that I am trying to unfold. It is the opus to a wild yet beautiful symphony."

MAGIC MAN follows Jackson’s journey as he finds himself in an alternate reality, operating under the laws of mystery, temptation, and confusion. “Magic Man” – the alter ego of Jackson – is transported to various realities, each bound by its own set of rules. This is Jackson at his most vulnerable - exploring what it means to be human and stripped away of any armor.

MAGIC MAN was produced by Jackson Wang, Daryl K and Henry Cheung. Preorder the album here.

Earlier this year, Jackson made an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, showcasing his undeniably charming personality and inspiration behind MAGIC MAN. He also opened up about his vulnerability in a digital exclusive here.

Jackson made history at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival as the first-ever Chinese solo artist who performed on the Coachella main stage as part of 88rising’s ‘Head In The Clouds Forever’ set. Watch his performance here. He is set to headline this year’s 88rising ‘Head In The Clouds’ Festival on August 20th and 21st at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. Purchase tickets here.

In addition to being a singer and producer, Jackson is also a fashion designer, creative director, founder of TEAM WANG designand member of the hugely successful K-Pop group, Got7. Universally admired by global press, Jackson has been featured extensively across Vogue, GQ, FLAUNT, ELLE, Forbes, Complex, New York Magazine, Billboard, The FADER, Buzzfeed, E!, and more.

As a globally acclaimed artist and a creative director, Jackson’s goal is to showcase a Chinese-influenced sound on the international music stage and highlight Chinese and Asian culture worldwide. In his ascent, Jackson has amassed over 55 million followers across socials.

Shopee, Shopee Xpress partner with Whisper and World Vision to empower young women to #Share The Confidence

Shopee, Shopee Xpress partner with Whisper and World Vision

MANILA, JULY 28, 2022 - Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, recently launched the #ShareTheConfidence campaign in partnership with Whisper and World Vision, to educate Filipinos on the importance of menstrual hygiene management. This initiative is part of Shopee Bayanihan, the company's umbrella CSR arm that seeks to provide support for communities in need through partnerships with various humanitarian organizations.

As part of the campaign, Whisper pledged to match and donate sanitary products for every Whisper product sold on Shopee from May 28 to June 30. Almost 130,000 young women from World Vision’s partner communities all over the Philippines benefitted from the initiative and received sanitary products through the delivery efforts of Shopee Xpress, Shopee’s logistics arm. Apart from raising awareness on proper menstrual hygiene management, the #ShareTheConfidence campaign also aimed to break the stigma around menstrual health and address the issue of period poverty in the Philippines.

Last July 22, Shopee and its partners culminated the #ShareTheConfidence campaign with an on-site event in Laurel, Batangas to turn over Whisper sanitary pads to over 85,000 beneficiaries within the area.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, shared “Everything we do at Shopee goes back to our main mission of serving the underserved through our technology. We are humbled to partner with Whisper and World Vision to empower Filipinas in need. We look forward to maximizing our platform to deliver even more meaningful initiatives that will benefit communities all over the Philippines.”

Twitter Unveils 3 Conversation Themes that are Important to Filipinos

Manila, 27 July 2022 – Billions of conversations take place on Twitter everyday which makes it the go-to platform for Filipinos to see and be part of #WhatsHappening in real-time. From breaking news, local entertainment, to various topics of interests; Filipinos on Twitter meaningfully connect and converse with each other that eventually help shape the Philippines’ culture and what’s next in the Philippines.

Analyzing billions of Tweets in the Philippines over a two-year period (January 2020 to December 2021), Twitter has taken a deep dive into the conversations on Twitter and shares its findings in the Philippines TwitterTrends Report 2022. The report found that Filipinos are passionate about bringing positive contributions to societal development. The findings also show that Filipinos perceive Twitter as a space for their communities’ collective reimagination – from mental wellness, fandoms, and finance.

The Great Restoration, Force of Fandoms, and Finance Goes Social are the three major cultural themes and conversation insights that are heard on Twitter that drive and shape Philippines’ culture.

Commenting on the findings, Preetha Athrey - Marketing Director, APAC, Twitter said, “What two years worth of Twitter conversations showed was that Filipinos turn to Twitter to collectively push for causes that matter to them. It’s heartening to see these communities empowered to engage in discussions that solicit positive impact to society. The report also lays out rich findings about the emerging key cultural trends in the Philippines and how the culture of tomorrow will be shaped.”

Let’s take a closer look at the three cultural themes and conversation trends on Twitter in the Philippines:

  1. The Great Restoration: Healing the planet and healing ourselves

A lack of access to green spaces and long-lasting lockdowns are two of the contributing factors to the decline in mental wellbeing amongst Filipinos. There is a 62% increase in conversations around mental health awareness and 69% around green spaces year-on-year. The need for support in tackling mental health issues, improving overall wellness, and a place to discuss other related matters prompted Filipinos to look to Twitter for ways to take the edge off of this.

The top sub-trends to emerge within the well-being conversation are participation in discussions (+104%) and coping mechanisms (+77%). Twitter becomes an open space for kindness as conversation rises. Filipinos on Twitter are openly speaking about their mental health issues and sharing steps on how they’ve been managing it. Hashtag #UsapTayo (let’s talk) attracts and gathers many, providing them with engaging and helpful mental health-related discussions, while the gift of virtual yakaps (hugs) offers a glimpse into what mutual care for those dealing with mental health challenges can look like online.

Keeping an eye on the future, Filipinos are realising that pivotal change is a must if their lifestyles and cities are to meet their mental and physical wellness needs. Thus, nature photography (+145%) and forest bathing (+133%) are two of the top sub-trends that emerged. Community-led campaigns like #NoToParex, for instance, exemplifies Filipinos’ resistance to projects that will negatively impact the environment, heritage, public health, and mobility.

  1. The Force of Fandoms: Fandoms spreading their wings beyond stanning

Filipino fandoms are second to none. Their passion and dedication are next-level and they’re realising that they have the power in numbers to create and drive positive change. It’s no longer ‘just’ about stanning, but about making the world a better place.

Variety and diversity are key here. With new fandoms appearing daily and conversations branching out across a multitude of topics, Filipino fandoms are taking over the world of entertainment. Local P-Pop groups have captured the hearts of Filipinos across the nation with a 223% increase in mentions of “P-Pop” and 40% around content streaming year-on-year. The vibrant space enables fandoms to flourish and thrive alongside one another, often attracting new audiences to Twitter. Conversations around new P-Pop groups are also growing year-on-year: Gigi Vibes (+4,706%), KAIA (+2,127%), and YARA (+508%).

Fandoms are constantly evolving, and Filipinos are borrowing elements from one fandom and applying it to another. The Bayanihan culture takes its next level, where fandoms are not only bonding over passion for their idols, but promoting social good, too. #ATINProjectPagsibol, for example, was a movement driven by SB19’s fandom in support of women in farming communities.

  1. Finance Goes Social: Investing has entered the chat

As the Philippines is switching up its relationship with money and finances, chats around digital wallets and investment are also on the rise. Filipinos are exploring and sharing new ways to make money, spend it, and talk about it too. This results in the growth of conversations around finance in the Philippines by 201% year-on-year.

With information on stocks, personal finance, trades, and crypto constantly racing; Filipinos stay up to date and react to what’s happening on Twitter. Some of the popular finance-related topics in the Philippines show triple digit year-on-year conversation growth: Crypto (+466%), ETH (+288%), and $SOL (+170%).

Creativity is brewing too. With 7,290% year-on-year growth, NFTs are making their mark on the art and gaming worlds as Filipino enthusiasts take the conversation to Twitter to bring about unidimensional finance-related dialogues with a splash of fun and creativity. Play-to-earn games, such as Axie Infinity (+54,282%), have transitioned from pure investment into entertainment conversation while Filipino gamers are connecting with other players around the world.

Lastly, while traditional banks are now pushing to digitise Filipinos’ lives, digital-wallet players like GCash (+287%) had a first-mover advantage on spending habits, streamlining access, and simplifying transactions.

On Twitter, where connections and conversations unfold, these trends are actually what Filipinos are talking about that shape their cultures and depict what’s coming tomorrow.

Check out to read more about the findings on the conversation insights on Twitter in the Philippines.
