Ballet Manila Closes 23rd Performance Season with DEUX

After a spectacular 23rd performance season, Ballet Manila is set to close its curtains with Deux, a double header that gracefully combines classical and contemporary ballet. The show will be held at the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex on March 2 and 9 at 6PM and March 3 and 10 at 3PM.

The first chapter of the show will open with classical vignettes. It will highlight “Les Sylphides,” also known as “Chopiniana” in Russia, a romantic dreamy white ballet that depicts a lone danseur (The Poet) surrounded by his muses – white-clad sylphs or air spirits, dancing in the moonlight. While there is no plot, its lingering music by Frederic Chopin and lyrical choreography by Michael Fokine evoke the illusion of ethereal weightlessness which characterized the romantic era of ballet where technique is the focal point, especially the intricate pointe work of ballerinas.

From this dreamy ambiance, the audience will be transported to the second chapter filled with contemporary numbers, and exhilarating rock and roll beats in the world premiere of Martin Lawrance’s The Winding Road set to the legendary music of The Beatles. The young or old will surely connect to the music and lyrics of I Saw Her Standing There, Here, There and Everywhere, Something, The Long and Winding Road, She Loves You, and many more!

“It has been a very exciting and rewarding 23rd season for Ballet Manila. It kicked-off with electrifying productions that formed part of our “Tour de Force” and now we’re poised to close it with Deux,” says Ballet Manila CEO and Artistic Director Lisa Macuja-Elizalde. “We thank our audiences for their continued patronage and support and we hope to see you all again when the curtains rise for our 24thseason.”

Love Life Plagued by Money Problems? Heed These Tips

Strong and healthy relationships are built on love and mutual respect, but sometimes even the strongest ones can get rocky, especially when faced with rifts about money.

AXA Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance companies, offers some tips on how to avoid money problems that can ruin relationships:

Establish accountability. Agree on who will be responsible for what. Who will cover monthly bills and day-to-day expenses and who will handle long-term savings? It is important that the system you come up with works for and has been agreed on by the both of you.

Know your priorities. Think about the future and identify what matters to you most. For married couples with children, the kids’ needs must be given priority. For new couples, identify assets that you both want to have someday. Invest a part of your savings so you have funds to spend for these priorities. AXA’s Asset Master, a single-pay, investment-linked insurance plan, allows you to build a diversified investment portfolio of local and global investments.

Live within your means. Whatever financial management strategy you follow, living within your means should guide your decisions. Spending recklessly might cause a strain on your relationship especially when you have set a financial goal, like making an investment or buying a house and lot or a car. Be open with each other about income and finances.

Protect your assets and worry less. Insure what you worked hard for, such as your home or your car, to lessen your financial worries. Prepare to deal with damages and losses caused by road and vehicular accidents with AXA Auto Security. Safeguard your home from natural and unexpected disasters like fire, flood, earthquake, storms and volcanic eruptions with AXA Property Insurance.

Set aside a “fun fund.” Couples who have fun together become closer and stronger. When creating a budget, make provisions for things that will give you joy as a couple—like traveling together. Feel more secure and safe when you travel with AXA Smart Traveller, which comes with a wide range of benefits including 24-hour medical assistance, personal accident coverage, liability and personal safety coverage, as well as refunds for travel inconveniences.

While we are well into the second month of the New Year, it’s still not too late to practice #SelfLove2019, especially when inclusive of this rapidly rising ideology is the empowering act of only keeping what makes you happy, or, as Netflix’ Marie Kondo would say, what “sparks joy”.

These of course, undoubtedly would include our personal photographs, which is quite unsurprising. Photographs, for the longest time, have been known to hold a lot of sentimentalities, and with the evolution of camera-centric smartphones in recent years, it’s been apparent that your albums have been flooded with all kinds of photos, and deleting has been difficult. And the same could be said even when deciding what kind of pictures to take as well.

Worry no more, though! We’ve made it easier for you to decide on which photos to keep or take. Largely patterned after the “KonMari Method” of the popular Netflix show, we placed blinders on ourselves and focused on the photos one should keep, or the photos one should be taking; and chose what we think would earn the most joyful “yes” against the ever so popular question, “Does it spark joy?”.

Without further ado, here is a shortlist of photographs that will undoubtedly spark joy to you this 2019:

Make it a practice to take and keep photos of things that make you happy, whether it’s your pets or even your favorite item at home. These will give the extra boost you need to get through those horrid Manic Mondays in the office!

An ATV adventure leading to the breathtaking view of Mt. Mayon

Don’t be afraid to go on adventures this year. Explore and experience life to the fullest and also remember to catch every moment possible. Somewhere down the road, you will look back at the memories and be reminded of the instances that you felt truly alive.
PRO TIP: Taking photos of any view will be easier with a ZenFone that has Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) because it can focus swiftly at whatever situation.

Ohori Park, discovered at the heart of Fukuoka City in Japan

Of course, where there is a photo of high adrenaline, there is a photo of serenity. Keep photos of the calm sea, the clear skies, or even the peaceful city nightscape. These do not only ease your eyes and mind, but these also serve as a reminder to keep yourself grounded in Zen when the going gets tough.

Whip out your trusty ZenFone, put it on selfie camera, and grab all the special people in your life for one amazing wefie. These people are your “persons” and they have your back no matter what. You can also return all the support they’ve given you by keeping a photo to remember by.

PRO TIP: It helps to use the softlight LED flash; especially when using the selfie cam for wefies. It gives everyone the chance to look amazing!

It’s high time to be unafraid of taking photos of yourself and sharing them with the world. So wear the brightest smile you can muster and strike your best angle. Why? Because you can. Besides, you never know – you, yourself, might spark joy in others.

2019 is definitely the year to push forth loving yourself and be unapologetic about it. Take the year by its reins and show the universe you are deserving of all the happiness that is rightfully yours. Of course, catching sparks of joy needs the right tool, and one that doesn’t have to break the wallet.

The ZenFone 4 Selfie Lite is definitely right for that job. With a goal to help you catch your precious moments in vivid and stunning quality just for the affordable price of PHP 6,995.00, this special ZenFone is designed with a 13MP selfie camera, great for taking your selfies as well as wefies. Team Lakay’s Gina Driven to Win in Bangkok for Her Mother

When Gina “Conviction” Iniong returns to action at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS this Saturday, 16 February, she will be battling for something bigger than herself, her team, or anyone else for that matter.

She will be doing it for her family — her mother in particular, who has been diagnosed with stage 5 chronic kidney disease.

“When we found out about her condition, we were all shocked. We were so clueless. Next thing we know, it’s already in stage 5,” said Iniong, who is slated to face the unbeaten Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

“My mother didn’t want to go to the hospital even though she felt ill. It was only when my older sister noticed swelling [all] over her body that we were able to bring her to the hospital.”

Now, “Conviction” is juggling her duties both as a mixed martial arts competitor and a daughter who is doing everything possible to take care of her mother.

Iniong is thankful to be in a very supportive family. Although they do not necessarily show affection through words, they make up for it through action.

“When we found out, the advice of the doctor was to undergo dialysis. We provided her with everything she needs. We’re working hand in hand for her,” the Team Lakay representative shared.

“She knows that we love her. We’re not the type of family to always say, ‘Ma, I love you,’ but we’re always here for each other. We know that no matter the hardships we go through, the whole family will be there to support you. That’s how we show our love.”

That is why she does not need any more motivation in bringing her A-game against Jihin. Talks of a World Title bout and redemption for her previous losses can wait.

Iniong only has one thing in mind.

“This upcoming fight, this is for my family.”

Prestone PH’s Anak ng Mekaniko Scholarship program bags Silver Anvil Award

Prestone Philippines, a leading innovator of cutting-edge coolants, brake fluids, and motor oils, bagged a silver award for its Anak ng Mekaniko Scholarship Program during at the 54th Anvil Awards.

Presented annually by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP), the Anvil Awards is recognized as the premier award-giving body in the communications industry that symbolizes excellence in public relations.

Prestone’s Anak ng Mekaniko Scholarship program emerged as one of the recipients of the coveted award under the PR Programs Targeted at Specific Stakeholders category.

In line with its 90th Anniversary, Prestone initiated the nationwide search aimed at choosing nine students, who deserve a chance at receiving a tertiary education through the Anak ng Mekaniko Scholarship program.

“Prestone designed this program to help local auto mechanics not just by providing them with top-of-the-line products to use for their livelihood, but more importantly, could ease the financial burden of sending their children to school,” said Paolo Lao sales and marketing director of Clorox Southeast Asia.

The program also shines a light on the fundamental human right to a good education regardless of one’s age, gender or status. It puts into focus the lengths to which parents would go to give their children a better life.

The scholarship program did not require the nine selected scholars to enroll in automotive technology or a similar vocational course. Instead, it was set up to provide a free college education for any degree that they want to have.

Receiving the award during the Anvil Awards’ Gabi ng Parangal were Prestone executives, together with Kieth Bryan Perez, one of the recipients of the scholarship grant, and his parents, as well as representatives from Prestone’s communication and activation partners Themeactive, Inc. and PRC, Inc.

Tips for Maintaining Healthy Eating Habits for the New Year

The new year always brings excitement and motivation for people who want to have a fresh start. One of the most common New Year’s resolutions we hear is about healthy eating, which is also probably one of the hardest things to follow.

However, don’t give up just yet. Making changes in your health takes commitment, but it is possible. One of the keys to succeeding is by forming and maintaining healthy eating habits.

Not sure where to start? Worry no more as Beko Philippines, the Official Partner of the Everyday, listed four tips to help make 2019 a healthful year for you and your family.

Drink enough water

We all know that drinking water is essential for the body but, what most of us don’t realize is how being properly hydrated plays a key role in our health.  In fact, dehydration often manifests as hunger, causing you to eat more.

Water not only helps the human body function well, but it also helps in maintaining a healthy weight and eliminating toxins. So, keep in mind to drink at least eight to 10 glasses every day.

Avoid fast food

Fast foods like French fries, burgers, pizzas, doughnuts, among many others, are high in sodium, fat, and sugar. Eating too much of it over a long period of time raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity.

Going to fast food joints can also lead to the formation of unhealthy eating habits. That is why it is important to eat it in moderation—or better if not at all.

Choose the better option

Some of the foods we enjoy eating are often not good for us. That is why it is essential to look for healthy alternatives. For instance, you can replace your regular fries with sweet potato. This slightly sweeter option is higher in fiber and vitamin A and is lower in calories than your usual potato.

You can also replace the classic hotdogs and burgers with a sandwich made with natural ingredients. By choosing the better option, you are ensuring your health and the quality of the food you consume.

Pack a healthy lunch and snacks for work or school

Packing lunch and snack for you or your kids is not only a good way to save money but is also an effective way to eat healthier since you know what ingredients are going into it.

By preparing your own food, you are able to control the quality and the amount of food you eat. It also help you avoid grabbing food from the cafeteria, restaurant or fast food, which are often not the healthiest option.

To make the journey in maintaining healthy eating habits more fun, consider using Beko’s GG15126DXPR Cooking Range, which has four Gas Burners plus a Wok Burner, Gas Oven, and Electric Grill. This cooker has the CleanZone feature, where the inner glass doors of the ovens are coated in oleophobic technology, which resists dirt and grimes so you don’t have to spend your time cleaning oven doors with heavy duty products. It also has an electronic ignition integrated into the knobs, which provides easy and simple lighting for gas burners.

The GG15126DXPR’s oven has a Gas Safety feature, which senses flames that might occur. If the flame goes out accidentally by wind or some kind of liquid, the gas flow automatically cuts off. And lastly, it has a Flame Failure Device for Burners that automatically cuts off the gas supply to prevent any gas leakage if the flame is accidentally extinguished by wind or overflowing liquid.

Siargao Surfers Win Coca-Cola Barkada Award for Instilling Value of Education, Environmental Protection

Siargao has witnessed a major spike in tourism in recent years because of avid Filipino and foreign surfers flocking to the surfing capital. Because of this, many local children have also developed a passion for the water sport. Seeing this desire among the local youth, a group of dedicated individuals were inspired to put up the Sun Crew, using surfing as a tool to make a positive change in the lives of the island’s locals.

At the 16th Ten Accomplished Youth Organization (TAYO) Awards, the Sun Crew was recognized as one of the main winners and was honored with the Coke Barkada Award for its innovative programs that have empowered local children and communities to build a brighter future and play a key role in protecting the environment.

Wemar Bonono, Sun Crew manager and co-founder, shared that his inspiration behind establishing the organization was to help the local children, especially because of his own experiences growing up in the island. At 14, Wemar dropped out of school and decided to work as a surfing instructor to provide for his family.

“Actually, noong bata pa ‘ko hindi ako nag-e-eskwela kasi sobrang hirap ng buhay noon kasi wala pang tourists. Tapos ‘yung mga bata, ayaw ko rin na matulad sa akin. Marami silang nagtatanong kung pwede ba silang sumali at sabi ko ‘You’re welcome to join!’ Hindi kami namimili, basta nag-e-eskwela lang, ‘wag nila kalimutan yung pag-aaral, ‘yun ang importante,” shared Bonono.

To improve the children’s school attendance and to provide them with skills that will alleviate them from poverty, the Sun Crew started the Smart Sustainable Surfers (SSS) program where children earn Surfer Points for attending school and participating in other programs in exchange for surfboard use and surfing lessons. The SSS program resulted in a 100% increase in school attendance, with students attending 4 to 5 times a week.

Aside from motivating students to attend school; one of the main thrusts of Sun Crew is to make the children and the local community the custodians of the island’s environment. To address the increasing waste that is produced with rising tourist arrivals, Sun Crew conducts weekly beach clean-ups with the help of the Smart Surfers, locals, and volunteers; collects and segregates the waste of the barangay; and holds eco-bricking and up-cycling sessions.

With its goal of creating a sustainable and waste-free Siargao and uplifting local communities through education, the Sun Crew best embodies the Coca-Cola company values and is aligned with the company’s vision of a World Without Waste. In January 2018, Coca-Cola announced its commitment to collect and recycle one bottle for each that it sells globally by 2030 and the company continues to work towards this goal.

Coca-Cola has been a proud partner of the TAYO Awards Foundation, Inc. and continues to recognize outstanding youth organizations that are building a better Philippines through innovative programs.

“Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines and TAYO go a long way. Our partnership began in 2005 through the Coke Barkada Award, a special recognition given to the TAYO finalist that shares our passion to improve wellbeing of communities with projects that are aligned with Coca-Cola’s sustainability priorities. We are grateful for this opportunity to stay connected to the youth through the TAYO awards,” shared Coca-Cola Foundation president Cecile Alcantara.

The other 16th TAYO Awardees were AQILAH (Marawi City), Association of Young Environmental Journalists (Dumaguete City), Center for Sustainability Philippines, Inc. (Puerto Princesa City), Cuartero National High School Taliamba Ensemble, FLMIS YES – O (Iligan City), MIMAROPA Young Leaders (Oriental Mindoro), Philippine Accessible Disability Services, Inc. (Lapu-Lapu City), Team BakUNAWA (Iloilo City), and Tuklas Katutubo – Upper Lumabat Chapter.
