NBA and CloudFone Announce New Multiyear Partnership in the Philippines

Ben Askren returns to ONE Cage to face Russian foe

ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben “Funky” Askren would like nothing more than to return to the cage and do what he does best and that’s to get in, dominate, and get out. The 31-year old former NCAA Division I wrestler from Arizona has been out of competition for nearly a year, but the good news is, he’s about a month away from climbing back in.

Askren (14-0) will face Russia’s Nikolay Aleksakhin (17-3) in a five round welterweight bout for Askren’s title. The bout will headline ONE Championship’s first event in Manila this year, called ONE: GLOBAL RIVALS.

Last April 2015, Askren battled hulkish Brazilian foe Luis “Sapo” Santos to a No Contest ruling after Santos deemed himself unable to continue after an inadvertent eye poke. A highly-anticipated rematch was scheduled months later in Singapore, only to have Santos miss weight and the bout cancelled at the eleventh hour.

In the first bout, Santos used his indomitable size and strength to throw Askren around like a ragdoll, manhandling him like never before seen in his career. Inevitably however, Santos began to fade and it started to look like Askren was about to take over -- and then the bout was cut short and the rest was history.

Since then, Santos has moved on for the time being, as he defeated Portuguese fighter Rafael Silva just last month in Jakarta, leaving Askren to deal with Aleksakhin.

Though Askren and Santos are still expected to cross paths sometime in the near future, Askren will have to successfully defend his belt against his Russian adversary to set the stage for the Santos rematch.

For his part, Aleksakhin is certainly no pushover, having won his last six bouts while notching three technical knockouts and a submission win to his credit.

He’s competed largely in his native country for most of his career, but last November, Aleksakhin debuted for ONE Championship with an impressive third-round rear naked choke of Mongolia’s Burenzorig Batmunkh. He’s expected to give Askren a stern challenge at the very least.

Askren is an All-American and collegiate wrestling legend. In just a few fights in ONE, Askren was able to seize the ONE Welterweight World Championship with a resounding technical knockout victory over Nobutatsu Suzuki in 2014.

The highly-skilled Askren is also widely considered to be the absolute best in his division and one of the best fighters in the world pound-for-pound.

Whether or not there are enough welterweight fighters out there like Aleksakhin and Santos to provide the American with a steady stream of worthy challengers remains to be seen.

For now, Askren is content with making that trip halfway across the world to Asia from his home in Phoenix twice a year to show fans what a world-ranked athlete looks like.

If he defeats Aleksakhin like he is supposed to, expect talks of another Askren-Santos bout shortly after.

Harte Hanks Expands in the Philippines




Manila – March 29, 2016:  – Harte Hanks (NYSE: HHS), a U.S-based leader in customer relationships, experiences and interaction-led marketing, helped Samsung grab attention and build engagement when it launched its Galaxy Note 4 in 2014.

Harte Hanks is well-known for creating many brand success stories for their clients that include Hewlett Packard Software EMEA, Microsoft UK Enterprise, Sony, and Samsung, will be opening a BPO-call center at the Mall of Asia Complex, in Pasay City on April 21.

Now, the Samsung campaign has been awarded Direct Marketing News’ 2016 Marketing & Tech Innovation Award in the Mobile Marketing category.

The campaign, directed at an under-30 audience, focused on using social media to turn someone’s bad day into a good day.  The campaign dubbed #NoteMyDay, helped turnaround bad days for those young people who tagged social media with #NotMyDay.

“Research tells us, millennials use social channels to share everything, even the bad things,” says Alan Kittle, creative director at Harte Hanks. “But we'd never seen a brand take direct action and find ways to make the bad days better, even though turnaround stories are popular. Using smartphone features to create happy endings felt so unusually emotional.”

To boost Samsung’s profile with this group, Harte Hanks teamed with Vine personality Rudy Mancuso and Snapchat artist Shaun “Shonduras” McBride.  The two ended up turning around bad days for 18 people in 10 countries over a three-day period.

The campaign generated 1.3 million interactions with the two social media stars; 15.2 million YouTube video views; 226,000 tweets of #NoteMyDay, which trended on Twitter in six key global markets. Most important the campaign helped Samsung sell 13.5 million phones in the fourth quarter of 2014.

#NoteMyDay has also been awarded by the Direct Marketing Association’s International Echo Awards and the Drum Dadi Awards, an award-giving body in Great Britain that celebrates excellence in digital, for “Best Consumer Campaign” and “Best Use of Video.”

A 15-hour Culinary Adventure

It was a whole day filled with fun, friendship and gastronomic delights as the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), the Department of Tourism (DOT), Makansutra and Ayala Malls launched the World Street Food Congress (WSFC) 2016 via a 15-hour food frenzy safari.

WSFC is an international culinary affair and will be held in the Philippines for the first time after being hosted by Singapore for the past two years. The five day event will take place at Bonifacio Global City (BGC) from 20-24 April 2016 and will feature the World Street Food Dialogue, World Street Food Jamboree, and World Street Food Awards. Registration for the World Street Food Dialogue is done online at www.wsfcongress.com.

Among those who participated in the food tour were Makansutra’s KF Seetoh, Indonesia’s culinary ambassador Chef William Wongso, Our Awesome Planet’s Anton Diaz, Chef Sau del Rosario, RJ Ledesma of Mercato Centrale and Singapore’s DJ Rosalyn Lee.

The street food safari kicked off at 7:00 AM at BGC then proceeded to food stops at Pampanga, Binondo and back to BGC at around 10:00 PM. The itinerary included Recovery Food, Everybody’s Cafe, Aling Lucing’s Sisig, Cafe Fleur, Sarsa Kitchen + Bar and Mercato Centrale Night Market. Traditional favorites such as tapsilog, sisig, kare-kare, lumpia and lechon were among the numerous iconic Filipino dishes the participants sampled during the jam-packed trip.

2015/2016 FIA Formula E Championship - Round 5 - Mexico


The Mexico City ePrix saw the MICHELIN Pilot Spot EVrise successfully to the very differentchallenge of competing around a permanent circuit, instead of at a temporary city-centre facility, as has been the case since the inaugural Formula E race in Beijing, in September 2014.
Previous venues have ranged from street tracks to public parks (as in London) and airfield runways (Berlin), but Mexico City chose the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguezand in the infield of a baseball stadium to stage its round of the FIA Formula E Championship.

Although the competition’s all-electric cars and their Michelin tyres have been tested previously at conventional tracks like Donington, England, and Issoire, France,purpose built circuits are very different to street circuits, notably in terms of the grip they provide, as well as the abrasiveness and dirtiness of the surface. For example, the exhaust fumes of ordinary traffic leave grimy deposits on city streets which are also covered in painted road signs, or crossed by tramlines. Permanent tracks have other hallmark characteristics.

“Until now, Formula E has tended to race along streets where thousands upon thousandsof vehicles are driven every day,” notes Serge Grisin, manager of Michelin’s Formula E programme. “In Mexico City, we were faced with an initially ‘green’, partially soiled track which took some time before it delivered maximum grip.Also, the temperature was initially quite cool in the morning before climbing very quickly.There were steady improvements in lap times as the surface started to rubber up during the free practice sessions.”

For example, Sébastien Buemi (Renault-e.dams) topped the timesheets in the two free practice sessions and improved his times by more than three seconds between mid-morning and the end of Free Practice 1 to set the benchmark at 1m3.341s.The other drivers improved to varying degrees, too, to illustrate the evolving conditions.

As lap times tumbled, any lingering doubts concerning the tyres’ ability to deliver around a race track were soon dissipated. “This was effectively unknown territory for us because we needed to take account changes in grip in places, as well as changes in the type of asphalt,” added Serge Grisin. “We were confident, though, thanks on the one hand to Michelin Motorsport’s experience of circuit racing and, on the other, because of the versatility the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV has shown in the Formula E Championship to date. It performed impeccably in Mexico City and the way it evolved matched our predictions. Today, I think we can say that whatever the weather or surface type, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV is a match for all types of conditions, with no detriment to either wear or performance.”

The Mexico City ePrix was won by Jérôme D’Ambrosio (Dragon Racing), ahead of Sébastien Buemi (Renault e.dams) and Nicolas Prost (Renault-e.dams).

The next round of the 2015/2016 FIA Formula E Championship will take teams to Long Beach, California, USA, on April 2, ahead of the inaugural ePrix in Paris, France, on April 23.

Tutuban Center holds bomb explosion and simulation exercise


To maintain the safety and security of shoppers, Tutuban Center recently conducted an bomb explosion and simulation exercise to test the capability of its emergency response team.
The simulated exercise was also meant to determine the strength and weaknesses of its Disaster Emergency Response Team (DERT) in responding to emergency situations and enhance its response procedures when dealing with delicate situations.
Tutuban’s Assistant Vice President-Safety and Compliance, Ted Mosquito, led the activity in close coordination and collaboration with PNP Police Station 2 to comply with the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Council (NDRRMC) manual and its implementing rules. The station, located at Nolasco corner Morga Streets in Tondo, Manila, has jurisdiction over Tutuban, and is headed by P/Supt. Nick Pinion.
“We have conducted this activity on a yearly basis in our efforts to serve our customers better, and maintain a safe and secure shopping center. By doing so, we also train and equip with enough knowledge and awareness our DERT staff, our tenants, employees and contracted service providers on how to respond and react properly in this kind of emergency,” explains Mosquito.
The activity was conducted in two phases: preparation and actual. Preparation involved coordination, collaboration and meetings with concerned offices/units and careful planning in terms of personnel and logistics, and the actual, where there were lectures, briefings and rehearsals of Tutuban’s DERT and other participants to ensure success.
Bottom line, the participants were proven effective and efficient in performing their individual roles and assigned tasks when responding to this type of emergency.

There were a total of 168 registered participants, comprised mostly of Tutuban personnel and police officers from Precincts 6 and 7 both under Police Station 2. Other units that participated include the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit (EOD), the Special Reaction Unit (SRU), Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) and the Manila Traffic Bureau, plus other Manila Police Department (MPD) units headed by no less than P/Senior Superintendent Carlito Felicano.

Meeting Mark Zuckerberg and My Facebook Friends Day Experience

Last January 31, 2016, Fellow Filipino Abby Asistio flew to San Francisco and had the wonderful opportunity of being chosen as one of the eighteen invited by Facebook on their 12th Anniversary Friends Day celebration with California-based Alopecia awareness advocate, Rachel Regal.  Alopecia is an autoimmune condition which results in partial or total head and body hair loss.  Abby Asistio have had it since she was four while Rachel just developed it sometime in 2012, the same year she discovered that her 10-year-old daughter, Eliana, had it, too.  Six inspiring stories were picked by Facebook among its 1.64 billion users and Abby’s friends were all amazed when theye’ve found out that Abby’s Alopecia story was one of them.

Abby and Rachel met each other through the double A hand sign campaign that Aby started in 2012, and They've been "connected" since then.  Last year, Facebook Stories featured how these
two were able to build a friendship, as well as campaign for disease awareness through Facebook!  And last February 1st, Abby and Rachel had the chance to tour FB headquarters in Menlo Park, San Francisco, meet and chat with the people behind Facebook (Founder & CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg, CPO Chris Cox, and a whole lot of awesome people), get crazy cool gadgets and have one of the best experiences of their lives.
Abby recounted that it was such a surreal feeling to be in the same room as the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. Mark Z was wearing his trademark look (jeans, sneakers, shirt and a big smile on his face), and had such a friendly, approachable aura and demeanor about him. 
Not at all intimidating!  He shared stories about how the company started, its mission-vision, the ups and downs that come along, and their future plans.  Those invited also had the chance to ask him questions. When Mark Z was asked about achieving success and life’s “impossibilities”.  He said, “There’s a difference between impossible and things taking a really long time. Even if you’re not going to be able to do something in a short time period, if you care about something,
you want to see the world to move into that direction…  So the best thing to do is just get started and not be discouraged.  It’s tough because this stuff is hard, or else people would’ve already
done it.

Abby Asistio got the chance to ask a question to one of the world’s 50 most powerful, successful women in business, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.  Aside from Alopecia awareness, Abby is
also an active Real Beauty advocate with girls and women struggling with various insecurities, being so consumed by the world’s unrealistic and sometimes superficial standards of beauty.  So
Abby asked Sheryl about her perception of it.  Sheryl said that beauty is just like success and that no one could really define it for you.  We are all unique.  We have different stories, dreams and desires. We should explore our own inner and outer beauty, believe and embrace that we are
beautiful, and never allow anyone to tell us otherwise.
Mark capped off his talk by sharing their company philosophy with everyone present. Though already having over 1 billion subscribers, there are still 7 billion people all over the world without access to all the meaningful connections and information that Facebook brings.  One thing that the company stands by is that “things are always 1% completed”.  It keeps them grounded, reminding them that there is always so much work, growth and progress to be done, and so many people to reach out to and help.
Everything about the Facebook trip was overwhelming and inspiring according to Abby.  More than anything, it reminded her about “responsibility”.  We are all given our own platforms, in this case “accounts and connections”, to make a dent in this world.  It is up to us to become complacent and take these vehicles for granted, or maximize the opportunities and use them to make a positive impact in this generation.  Abby is grateful that Facebook has become a medium for her to communicate disease awareness and touch people beyond the confines of her tiny room and her country.  Abby is also glad that she and Rachel are two out of millions of people choosing to recognize the importance of social media in contributing to making this world a
better place, and actually doing something about it.
Truly, God plans the best adventures and creates the most beautiful surprises.  Abby knows that she wouldn't have been handpicked for this if it weren't for Him, as well as the countless individuals who have cared and showed support for my advocacy.  Abby would like to leave a
positive thought to everyone that we should really take the time to search for and identify our “purpose” – that one unique, very specific calling that is the result of our talents, dreams, desires, passions and experiences.  Once you find it, be faithful to it no matter how long or difficult the

Lamudi Launches Redesigned Mobile App for Improved Property Hunting Experience

To further improve the experience of modern-day property hunters, online property portal Lamudi Philippines has released a modified version of its mobile innovation for homebuyers. The updates includes additional in-app components such as enhanced filter searches and a wish list for logged out users.

Cash Cab Philippines Set to Conclude Debut Season on High Note


The coolest cab in town has definitely made commuting in the city a cheerier task.  Since premiering last December, Cash Cab Philippines has entertained viewers with its mobile trivia game show. It immediately went into high gear, consistently enjoying good ratings.

Host Ryan Agoncillo, a matinee idol-turned-host extraordinaire and a devoted father has played “Kuya Driver” since December. He has traversed the streets of Metro Manila in an inconspicuous taxi cab for months, picking up passengers and instantly transporting them to a game show stage.
Cash Cab aired its original version first in the United Kingdom and has since invaded the streets in other countries in Europe and Asia.

This March, Cash Cab is set to wrap up its first “trip” around the bustling streets of Manila and viewers are expected to await announcements regarding a second season.

Reader’s Digest has been giving the Trusted Brand awards for the past seventeen years based on a survey of ordinary consumers who give their opinions on what brands of products and services are important to them. According to Readers Digest, “A Trusted Brand enjoys international appeal, yet at the same time upholds a strong local connection. It has individual relevance for all its consumers, just about anywhere and in any culture.”

Gold Trusted Brand Awards are given to brands that scored significantly higher than their rivals while the Asia Trusted Brand Awards are given to a brand that wins the Reader's Digest Trusted Brand award in the same category for at least three countries surveyed.

All Things Cool and Smart Presented at the Internet of Things Summit Philippines


Virtual Reality. Latest wearables, Connected home devices, Smart Toys, 3D printing, Cloud Services, Robots, Ironman, BB8 Droid, Wifi Electric Socket and Theta Camera were few of the many featured tech gadgets and solutions at the recent IoT Summit Philippines held last March 4 and 5, 2016 at the Megatrade Hall 3, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

The first Internet of Things (IoT) Summit in the  was the culminating feature in the 3 part event that included a Bootcamp and a Hackathon in partnership with ThinkLab which introduced and taught building hardware (IoT) projects using Gizduino board provided by e-Gizmo, and cloud computing solutions provided by Microsoft Azure held at ASpace_Palet Express.  


Elaine Cedillo, the IoT Summit over-all project head with Diego Jose Ramos Co-Founder of Redwizard Events, members of PhilRobotics and Thinklab, the trainors and facilitator of the Bootcamp.

Aside from featuring Smart Home, Smart Toys, 3D printers, Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies, the Summit opened the event with a conference having some speakers who are the prime movers of IoT Technology in the Philippines and abroad.

THE IOT SUMMIT PHILIPPINES’ PLENARY
Mr. Marthyn Cuan, the Chief Digital Officer of MERALCO gave the opening keynote followed by Gio Abaquin of Smart Enterprises that discussed the roadmap of IoT in our country together with Leo Lirio of IoT Technology Inc. While Joel Garcia of Microsoft Philippines, Teo Pohsoon from Ultimaco Singapore, Lowell Tortana of Nokia, Yue Savage of Impinj USA and Dr. Hernando Delizo of Clinica Manila also shared their expertise on Big data and Security, 5G in the Philippines and Connected Health respectively.

A panel discussion on Wearables and 3D printing were also the point of interest of the attendees. Showcasing the current and future plans on the said industries esp. that more and more multi-billion companies such as Samsung and Facebook are looking into the VR tech.



THE IOT HACKATHON PROJECTS

Several projects from the hackathon were part of the exhibit and the highlight of the event including the group demos and judging was held the next day, March 5. Projects that were presented included a pet feeder, posture tracking wearable, bicycle safety (signal light and theft tracking), NFC child tracking, irrigation management, fire alarm system (smoke detectors), pollution detectors, e-waste management, electricity monitoring and metering, motion and sound sensing smart plugs, and NFC / RFID security system.

The groups presented their demos in the plenary and the panel of judges vetted the projects with innovation, impact, design execution, business potential, and demo as metrics. 
Project Bantay of Team Biotics emerged as the Grand winner. It is a simple home/office security system built on motion sensor device that can be manually activated. When triggered, options are 1. Emit an audible and/or visual alarm, 2. Take picture of the area where the event was triggered, and 3. Send SMS/MMS alert to a preconfigured smart phone and/or email the captured picture with tag to a dedicated email account.
This system is also equipped with an NFC/RFID Door lock which is accessed by a tagged NFC key/card.
