Manila, Philippines — The world is set to witness the first large-scale collaboration of the Philippines’ startup community from November 18 to 22 with the Philippine Startup Week 2019 (PHSW19). Themed “Showcasing the Filipino Startup Community to the World”, the PHSW19 is a collaboration by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), QBO Innovation Hub, and various private agencies.

“As the first-of-its kind collaboration for Filipino startups, the Philippine Startup Week is more than just a gathering, it’s a celebration and a recognition of how far Filipino startups have come and how further they can go. It’s a testament to the government’s commitment to invest in ideas that have the potential to become the country’s next big time successful companies,” says DOST Secretary Fortunato T. dela Peña.

The weeklong celebration features a series of events simultaneously happening across the country, including a three-day main summit, five-day conference, and over 50 nationwide breakout community events that will showcase the Philippines as a rising startup nation.

Just recently, President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Republic Act No. 11337, or the Innovative Startup Act, cementing the government’s commitment to building the Philippines as a startup hub.

DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez highlights how Filipino startups are crucial to the country’s economy by bringing in investments, providing job opportunities, and contributing to a community’s development. “With the Innovative Startup Act and Philippine Innovation Act, which are both supporting the startup community, we are optimistic that these will help in making the Philippines as one of the leading countries in developing disrupting startup concepts. We have a strong potential in this area especially that Filipinos are creative, innovative, and know how to keep up with changing technology and use it in finding solutions to societal problems,” shares DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez. “We want to build an entrepreneurship ecosystem that will push for innovation through more internet platforms and more new business models."

“The signing of the Innovative Startup Act is just the first step. We’re seeing more collaborations happening in the future. This is just one of them. We are excited to bring all the innovative startups in the country to meet fellow startup founders, share and learn from their success stories, and showcase the power of technology and innovation,” says DICT Secretary Gregorio Honasan II.

Building a community of inspired innovators

QBO Innovation Hub, the country’s first public-private initiative for startups created through a partnership between IdeaSpace, J.P. Morgan, DOST, and DTI, will spearhead the events and activities happening during PHSW19 by bringing together the best of the best in their respective fields.

Startup founders and aspiring entrepreneurs who will participate at PHSW19 will get access to a myriad of networking opportunities, learning sessions, and interactive activities.

“The PHSW19 is a nationwide celebration and so we’re inviting the entire Filipino startup community to come together, grow together, and move our country’s startup scene towards its golden era,” says QBO Innovation Hub President Rene Meily. “Here you can showcase not just your startup but also your pride as a Filipino entrepreneur.”

The PHSW19 will start on November 18 with multiple community events in Metro Manila hosted by various partner companies. The three-day main summit is set from November 20-22 at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Ortigas City which will host three main events: DOST’s “TBI Summit”, DICT's “Tech Advantage”, and DTI’s “Slingshot” which will also be held in Dumaguete on November 19 and in Bohol on November 21.

MrSpeedy Gears Up to Empower the Filipino Entrepreneur

MrSpeedy Philippines, the fastest growing same-day delivery service in the country, is lowering down its rates to become the most affordable delivery partner for Metro Manila on-line sellers. True to their motto of empowering the Filipino Entrepreneur, MrSpeedy aims to support small on-line sellers with a reliable and affordable service to help them be competitive in the current trend of instant delivery.

"We see that the trend right now for online selling is instant delivery, but it is hard for small online businesses to afford this service. By slashing down our prices, our goal is to arm our local businesses to be more competitive, especially against the dominating giants out there," said MrSpeedy’s Country Manager Jason Gaguan.

"We believe that this is the age of the Filipino Entrepreneur and we want to be part of that economic revolution. In everything we do, we always ask ourselves: Paano 'to makakatulong mag-palaki ng negosyo sa isang Instagram, Facebook o Carousell seller?"

MrSpeedy focuses on three things that they found out is most important for small online businesses: Delivery Price, Customer Support and seamless Cash on Delivery.

With MrSpeedy's pricing at PHP6/km, it is now the most affordable same-day delivery service as it is 40% cheaper than its competitors in Metro Manila. Alongside its affordable pricing, MrSpeedy has invested heavily in its customer support both in technology and headcount to ensure that their clients are heard and assisted in every step of their delivery- even going as far as creating personal chat groups with their clients. Aside from this, the MrSpeedy Mobile App is very easy to use. Users just have to input the pick-up and delivery drop-off pin locations and input contact details for the said addresses, and they will be able to see the total delivery price – with no hidden charges. The simplicity of booking a delivery is what makes MrSpeedy’s service friendly to clients. To add to their online seller-centric approach is a Cash on Delivery service that boasts of a 12-24 hour remittance window. Since offering cash-on-delivery to their online stores, clients are pleased to note their businesses have gained an increase of up to 300%.

Asked about why online businesses should choose MrSpeedy versus other platforms, Gaguan answers, “Technology wise, we are very similar to our competitors, pero lumalamang kami in understanding what our customers need, nakikinig kasi kami. Very simple lang naman ang gusto namin, to give the cheapest price, mapadala ng mabilis ang package at sumagot kagad pag may concern ang customer at i-resolve instantly. We want things to be simple, we just want to be the best partner of small businesses in Manila.”

8 November 2019 – Manila, Philippines: The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), once again electrified the crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. Last Friday night, 8 November, ONE: MASTERS OF FATE played host to a series of action-packed and compelling contests, delivered by the absolute best in world-class martial arts talent.

In the main event, Joshua "The Passion" Pacio of the Philippines turned in a dominant performance, submitting compatriot Rene "D' Challenger" Catalan in the second round to retain his ONE Strawweight World Championship. Pacio survived an early submission scare from Catalan to impose his will on the ground. In the second round, Pacio stuffed a takedown from Catalan and worked his way into mount, before securing a masterful arm-triangle choke, leaving the challenger with no choice but to tap out.
In the co-main event of the evening, former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang of the Philippines earned a technical decision victory over Mongolia's Amarsanaa "Spear" Tsogookhuu after an unintentional clash of heads brought the bout to an abrupt end. Folayang was on fire in the opening round, turning up the aggression with his strikes. A collision of heads midway into the second round was ruled as an unintentional foul, leading to a technical decision being made, which went in favor of the Filipino martial arts hero.

Multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Sangmanee "The Million Dollar Baby" Sathian Muaythai of Thailand impressed in his ONE Championship debut, defeating Azize “The Magician” Hlali of Morocco by unanimous decision. Sangmanee outstruck Hlali over the course of the three-round affair to walk away with the judges’ nod on all three scorecards, earning him a spectacular victory in his maiden appearance on the ONE stage.

Former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje "Gravity" Eustaquio barged back into the win column with a thrilling knockout victory over Finland's Toni "Dynamite" Tauru. In the first round, it looked as if Tauru was going to pick up an early submission win, but Eustaquio survived getting his back taken and proceeded to turn the tide in his favor. After a rocky opening stanza, Eustaquio rallied back in the second round by using his superior striking to do heaps of damage. The former flyweight king finished things off in the third round with a spinning back kick to the midsection that sent Tauru crashing to the mat for the highlight-reel stoppage win.
Reigning ONE Atomweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing World Champion Stamp Fairtex of Thailand took another big step forward in her mixed martial arts career, picking up a huge win over Vietnamese-American star Bi "Killer Bee" Nguyen. Stamp used her top-notch striking to pick Nguyen apart in the standup, while showing off her improved grappling to defend against Nguyen's takedown attempts. Nguyen stood right in front of Stamp, but had difficulty finding her mark. After three rounds of fast-paced action, Stamp walked away with the clear-cut decision win and remained unbeaten in her ONE Championship career.

Chinese spitfire "The Underdog" Li Kai Wen returned to the ONE Championship ring in style with a first-round knockout victory over Indonesia's Paul "The Great King" Lumihi. Li was aggressive right off the bat, charging at Lumihi to unleash a flying knee to open the action. After an exciting exchange between the two warriors, Li unloaded a three-punch combination, capped off by a right uppercut to put Lumihi to sleep.

Former ONE Strawweight World Champion Yoshitaka "Nobita" Naito of Japan kept his momentum going with a three-round unanimous decision victory over Thailand's Pongsiri "The Smiling Assassin" Mitsatit. The Japanese grappler imposed his game plan well, as he was able to ground Mitsatit at will. The Thai star looked to reverse his fortunes by pressuring Naito with his striking, but it wasn't enough as the former strawweight king remained unstoppable with his takedowns. After three rounds of action, Naito walked away with the decision win.

Multiple-time Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai World Champion Kongsak “Left Savage” PK.Saenchaimuaythaigym put on a striking clinic as he defeated Top King Muay Thai World Champion and former ONE World Title challenger Han Zi Hao of China to win by unanimous decision. The Thai stalwart controlled the action throughout the three-round bout, using crisp combinations to score points on the judges’ scorecards. Han had no answer for Kongsak, as the Thai warrior cruised to a dominant decision win.

The Philippines' own Robin "The Ilonggo" Catalan sent the Mall of Asia Arena into a frenzy after scoring an explosive knockout victory over Cuba’s Gustavo "El Gladiador" Balart. Catalan was on point with his striking throughout the bout, and was able to hold his own against the high-level grappling of the Olympian wrestler Balart. Late in the second round, Catalan uncorked a well-timed right high kick that connected and took Balart out instantly, much to the delight of Catalan’s hometown crowd.

Multiple-time Muay Thai World Champion Tukkatatong Petpayathai picked up a gritty split decision win over former ONE World Title challenger Hiroaki "Kaibutsukun" Suzuki of Japan in his return to the ONE Championship ring. It was an exciting back-and-forth affair between the two strikers, with Tukkatatong scoring points with his body kicks. After three rounds of action, it was the Thai veteran who walked away with the decision.

"The Fighting God" Kim Jae Woong of South Korea announced his arrival in the ONE Championship featherweight division in exciting fashion with a technical knockout victory over Brazilian veteran Rafael "Indio" Nunes. Kim picked Nunes apart in the striking department, and was able to survive the Brazilian grappler's submission attempts. In the final round, Kim landed a punch to the body that ultimately spelled the end for Nunes, leading to a gutsy win for the South Korean inside the distance.

South Korea's Kim Kyu Sung bounced back in spectacular fashion with a quick knockout win over ONE Warrior Series contract winner Akhiro "Superjap" Fujisawa of Japan. Kim needed only 68 seconds to stop Fujisawa, after landing a well-placed right uppercut to earn the highlight reel finish.

Kicking things off at ONE: MASTERS OF FATE in Manila, India's Roshan Mainam put on an impressive performance in his ONE Championship debut, submitting Cambodia's Khon Sichan via first-round Americana. Mainam wasted little time in getting the action to the ground, taking Sichan down with ease. Once on the mat, Mainam imposed his will on Sichan, getting into mount before finishing the bout with a slick armlock.

No Price Hike for 134 Noche Buena Products, 6 Products Have Decreased Prices – DTI Chief

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reported that a total of 134 Noche Buena products have maintained its prices while six products have lower prices this 2019 compared to last year’s suggested retail price (SRP) list.

In a 2018 versus 2019 comparative SRPs of Noche Buena products released by the agency, 134 product lines such as keso de bola, cheese, sandwich spread, mayonnaise, pasta spaghetti, elbow and salad macaroni, spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, as well as creamer products have maintained their prices since last year.

DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez shared this news amidst the recent reports that there are 92 products that have increased their prices. Every year there are increases for a few premium brands, and most would have minimal increases. However, brands for mass-based markets don’t usually change. “This is due to their fear of competition and the probability of losing market share in a price sensitive segment,” said the trade chief.

Six products -- which include keso de bola, pasta spaghetti, and tomato sauce --even lowered their prices by Php 11. These are Danes Cheese Ball, Amigo Segurado Spaghetti, La Filipina Spaghetti, Del Monte Filipino Style and Original tomato sauce.

Meanwhile, among the 134 products with no price increase, nine were keso de bola (Ques-O, Magnolia, Che-Vital, and Danes); 11 were cheese (Eden, Danes Classic, Kraft Cheddar, Che-Vital quickmelt); 14 were sandwich spread (Eden, Cheez Whiz, Best Food, Lady’s Choice); 14 mayonnaise products (Eden, Best Food, Lady’s Choice); 13 pasta spaghetti products (El Real, Fiesta, La Filipina, Royal, Sunshine, Ideal Gourmet, Balducci, San Remo); 17 were elbow and salad macaroni (Sunshine, Fiesta, Ideal Gourmet, Royal); 19 spaghetti sauce products (Amigo Segurado, UFC, Del Monte, Sunshine, Fiesta, Royal); 10 tomato sauce (UFC, Del Monte, Amigo); and three creamer products (Angel Krem, Alaska Crema Combi and Asada).

Ham manufacturers have introduced new sizes for some of their products. These variations are available in smaller packs, which offer lower cash out for consumers.

Smart tips from the trade chief

DTI recently issued the SRPs of Noche Buena products, which serve as price guide for consumers as they prepare for the holidays. Noche Buena products are not considered part of the basic necessities and prime commodities, and they are not under price control.

To help consumers, Sec. Lopez shared smart tips for Noche Buena and Media Noche shopping.

  1. Prepare your shopping list using the SRP list at before going to the leading supermarket in your area. You can also check it via the e-Presyo mobile app. The trade chief advised consumers to purchase their Noche Buena and Media Noche needs at supermarkets, as the prices there are monitored by DTI.
  2. Watch out for promo bundle packs in the promo section. Most of food manufacturing companies offer bundle packs of Noche Buena products, which provide savings. Some of these bundle packs include spaghetti pasta with sauce and cheese, macaroni with mayonnaise and fruit cocktail, among others.
  3. Look for products that are not expiring soon.

“Most importantly, I advise consumers to choose the products they find value for themselves and their family. It is advised to do the Christmas grocery shopping early and avoid the holiday rush,” shared Sec. Lopez.

“DTI would like to ensure that consumers will always have the value-for-money product and brand options that they can choose from, especially this Christmas season,” the trade chief concluded.

Carousell Tackles Counterfeit

Carousell, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing classifieds, has launched the Carousell Rights Owners Programme (CROP), a platform that tackles counterfeit listings in collaboration with brand partners. CROP provides assurance to brands, whose rights are more closely protected, and users, who can deal with greater confidence in the marketplace platform.

CROP allows trusted brand partners to directly remove listings of brand replicas from Carousell with zero processing time, thus tightening the content moderation process by drastically reducing the time required for takedowns. First piloted in December 2018 in Singapore, CROP has taken down 13,000 listings in the nine months since its introduction. Only select brand partners, whose activities will be closely monitored by Carousell, will have access to CROP and its content moderation capabilities. Brands that have come onboard CROP include Nike, Grab and luxury brands such as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta.

“We want to create a trusted marketplace platform and protect Carousellers from inadvertently purchasing counterfeits or unauthorised goods, while at the same time protecting brands’ rights. CROP allows us to proactively address both these issues seamlessly, eliminating any delay in action altogether. Once a listing has been deemed counterfeit and removed directly by the brand through CROP, the seller will automatically receive an email to notify them of the takedown due to their item’s infringement of Intellectual Property (IP) rights,” said Serena Darcel Chin, Head of Legal, Carousell.

Carousell’s existing counterfeit policy prohibits the sale of fake products, replicas or counterfeits and the creation of any content that violates any intellectual property rights. However, prior to CROP there was a longer process from the flagging of an item to the actual takedown, as its URL had to be first submitted to Carousell’s brand protection team for processing. To ensure swift action, Carousell is looking to further streamline and automate CROP’s processes in the near future.

“Trust and safety continues to be a key priority for Carousell. Carousell has been collaborating with and supporting the Police's efforts in combating the sale of counterfeit goods on its platform. We are invested in building a holistically safe and conducive environment for buying and selling and have seen very promising results from our combined efforts to tackle counterfeits,” said Raffy Montemayor, General Manager, Carousell Philippines.

CROP is the latest development Carousell’s series of dedicated efforts in building a trusted environment for its users. Besides CROP, Carousell has also invested resources in Sift Science (a third party service provider) and manual moderation teams to help combat counterfeits on the platform.

PRRD Orders Inclusion of Hollow Blocks in the List of Products with Mandatory Certification – DTI Chief

The Cabinet deliberated on the impact of the recent series of earthquakes and the measures moving forward. According to Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez, among the concerns raised by President Rodrigo Duterte during the recent Cabinet meeting was the quality of hollow blocks, noting many small hollow block makers may not follow standard processes and specifications needed in production. Even as Sec. Lopez gave assurance on the standard compliance of steel and cement, among others, the President mandated the inclusion of hollow blocks in the list of products with mandatory certification as these are not yet included in the certification schemes implemented by DTI-Bureau of Philippine Standards.

Relatedly, the President ordered all local government units (LGUs) and contractors to ensure that all construction materials being used in any construction activity must pass quality standards. If they are found to be using inferior quality construction materials and not adhering to the specifications in the Building Code as well as in its structural design, their licenses as contractors may be revoked. Likewise, contractors of government projects that use uncertified materials will not be paid and their contracts will be terminated.

“The quality of any building structure depends not only on the product standards, but also on the quality of the construction job, particularly on adherence to approved structural design and the Building Code, required steel density, cement mixtures, among others,” Sec. Lopez said.

DTI ensures the standard compliance of products under the mandatory certification list such as cement, steel, nails and glass (although glass’ inclusion is currently under court injunction).

Under the Duterte administration, DTI has tightened products’ certification and procedures. Apart from the PS accreditation of the manufacturing plant, products are also tested at the plant. For imported steel or cement, these are tested at pre-shipment and post-shipment. Sampling size for testing was also increased by more than 15 times.

More products are now being studied to be included in the mandatory certification list such as plywood, roofing, and tiles.
