It’s Time to MOVE: Manulife Philippines Launches Series of Activities Promoting Lasting Health Habits

MANILA, Philippines—Manulife Philippines, the local arm of leading international financial services provider Manulife, continues to champion sustainable health habits as it launched its Time to MOVE campaign, a series of initiatives encouraging Filipinos to make the first step toward better well-being. The first in the series was “Run and Recover” in partnership with Just Show Up, a community-driven run collective that promotes health and connection, in Makati City.

The Time to MOVE campaign supports Manulife’s strategic priority of empowering customers' health, wealth, and longevity and aligns to the recently launched Manulife Longevity Institute, a global platform to drive action that helps people live longer, healthier, and more financially secure lives.
The campaign builds on ManulifeMOVE, Manulife Philippines’ holistic health program bringing together the right proposition, products, platforms, and partners to improve customer’s well-being at every stage, which the company launched in 2025.
It also helps address key findings from Manulife’s Asia Care Survey and #FYP: Future-proofing Young Pinoys study that show Filipinos’ evolving view on longevity, and the gaps between awareness, monitoring, and practice of habits that support better quality of life.

“Our studies show that there’s a strong desire for Filipinos to live healthier, more meaningful lives. Filipinos value holistic health and purpose, but stress, busy schedules, and everyday pressures often get in the way of turning intention into action,” said Sonali Verma, Chief Marketing Officer, Manulife Philippines. “Our Time to MOVE campaign is a reminder that movement doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it starts with a simple decision—to show up and take that first step toward achieving our health goals.”

The Run and Recover series will continue with two additional activities in the coming months: a recovery-focused session in May that pairs a community run with contrast therapy, and a reset experience in June that integrates breathwork, sound healing, and nutrition. These events reflect a shared belief between Manulife and Just Show Up: that long-term wellbeing is built gradually, through habits that stick.

Filipino Women Prioritize Healthier Years and Financial Independence, Manulife Study Finds

MANILA, Philippines — Data from Manulife's #FYP: Future-proofing Young Pinoys study shows that 60% of young Filipino women prioritize their healthspan—the years spent in good health—compared to 46% of male respondents. Women also place greater importance on financial independence than men (60% vs. 44%), underscoring that Filipinas want a future on their own terms.
Yet the path toward that future is not without its pressures. The same study finds that 73% of female respondents report high stress levels, compared to 55% of their male counterparts. The work-life balance gap offers a telling glimpse of why stress levels are notably wider among women (22%) compared to men (15%), reflecting the competing demands many Filipinas navigate across their professional, personal, and caregiving roles.
For many women, this pressure shows up as sustained stress that affects everyday well-being. One in five experiences shortfalls in sleep, while 15% struggle to maintain a balanced diet, foundational habits that directly influence health, energy, and resilience.
It is worth noting that awareness isn’t the issue. Most survey respondents report strong knowledge of health and wellness—yet 76% of millennial women say stress prevents them from pursuing their desired level of well-being, highlighting a persistent gap between knowledge and action.
“The data is clear: many women are feeling the physical and mental strain of trying to manage everything at once. With careers, caregiving, and financial pressures converging, Manulife is focused on giving Filipino women practical options to protect their health today while building financial confidence for tomorrow,” said Grace Mallabo, Chief Health and Products Officer, Manulife Philippines.
Turning insights into action: Solutions that help Filipinas protect their health today and build financial confidence for tomorrow
Through its suite of health and protection solutions, including the Manulife HealthFlex critical illness plan, which offers coverage for over 100 critical illnesses from early diagnosis to recovery, and provides additional benefits for gender-specific cancers, including breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancer for women, among many others. Manulife Medical Secure, meanwhile, provides up to PHP5 million in medical coverage with cashless access to over 1,700 hospitals and clinics nationwide; and Manulife GoalReady, which supports long-term financial goals with protection and investment features, Manulife helps women safeguard their financial independence, no matter what stage or season of life they're in.
As part of its global commitment to championing longevity, Manulife runs programs such as ManulifeMOVE, a holistic health platform designed to encourage healthier habits through everyday movement and proactive lifestyle choices Manulife Philippines and Manulife China Bank Life also recently entered into a partnership with ACHealth that aims to educate Filipinos on cancer prevention and help improve access to comprehensive cancer care.
“Closing the work-life balance gap starts with tools that enable women to protect what matters most: health, income, and time,” Mallabo added. “With the right coverage and guidance, women can move through every stage of life with confidence, whether they're building careers, caring for family, or planning for the future. That’s how we champion longevity—not just living longer, but living better—by making financial wellness practical, personal, and empowering for every Filipina.”
As Women’s Month calls attention to the resilience and contributions of Filipino women, Manulife Philippines encourages women to prioritize their own health and financial security now and for the long term.
This initiative builds on Manulife’s refreshed strategy, advancing its strategic priority of empowering customers' health, wealth, and longevity and aligns to the recently launched Manulife Longevity Institute, a global platform to drive action that helps people live longer, healthier, and more financially secure lives by 2030.

In Latest Collaboration with Manulife, Erwan Heussaff Puts Spotlight on Longevity

MANILA, Philippines – For Manulife Philippines brand ambassador and content creator Erwan Heussaff, living better and attaining longevity boils down to one thing: intentionality. In a video he produced in partnership with Manulife Philippines, Erwan looked back at his experience speaking during “Time to Move: the Manulife Longevity Symposium” in October where he and other industry experts tackled how Filipinos are approaching health and aging in the lens of longevity.

“Today's world moves so fast. And so do the choices we make about our health, our habits, and our future. Longevity isn't just about living longer. It's about living with intention,” Erwan Heussaff said in the video posted on his Instagram account.

The symposium served as a platform for discussions on how physical, mental, and financial health impact longevity. Heussaff shared the stage with Manulife Global Chief Sustainability Officer, Ariel Kangasniemi, in discussing living healthier and making sustainable choices, particularly in the food we eat.

“When we think of food, we think of something that we eat, and something that keeps us going. I always say just do things with intent. When you do something, know why you're doing it, and that you shouldn't let guilt eat you up. So, if you want to eat fast food, I can't stop you. For the other things that you're eating, maybe just make a conscious decision of what you're eating, it really has to start with you,” Heussaff said.

His work as a content creator traveling around different parts of the Philippines and his passion for food, he said, have made him realize more that even small steps count in taking care of our health and our communities.

“Through what we decide to do every day, we can create change for ourselves and also for our direct community. But it really has to start with you—with the decisions that you make every day. Even the small ones, they all count and lead you to a bigger goal,” he said.

“We are thrilled to continue shining a spotlight on these very important conversations with Erwan,” said Sonali Verma, Chief Marketing Officer, Manulife Philippines “Through his content and our other platforms, such as the Longevity Symposium and ManulifeMOVE, we aim to inspire and empower Filipinos with practical insights and actionable steps, helping them make intentional choices that lead to healthier, more sustainable, and ultimately better lives.”

This latest collaboration between Heussaff and Manulife follows his previous features that centered around healthy eating and the impact of protecting the environment to communities such as Manulife’s partnership with Haribon Foundation, which continues to benefit residents, farmers, and micro-entrepreneurs in Quezon Province.

This initiative builds on Manulife’s commitment to longevity and is exemplified by the recently launched Manulife Longevity Institute, which is a global platform that seeks to drive action to help people live longer, healthier, and more financially secure lives by 2030 – in Asia and around the world.

New Manulife Report Finds Asians Want to Live Better, Not Just Longer, as They Prepare for a 40-Year Retirement

MANILA, Philippines – As people across Asia live longer than ever before, a growing number are prioritizing purpose and quality in a longer life, according to the 2025 Financial Resilience and Longevity Report for Asia (the “Report”) unveiled by Manulife Wealth & Asset Management (Manulife WAM). The Report reveals that as longevity rises across the region, people aspire to live independently and healthily in retirement, but many still face challenges in achieving lasting financial resilience.

The Report, which focuses on Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, builds on Manulife’s established commitment to longevity preparedness and is exemplified by the recent launch of Manulife’s Longevity Institute, a global platform that seeks to drive action to help people live longer, healthier, and more financially secure lives.
Calvin Chiu, Head of Asia Retirement, Manulife and Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Investment Management Hong Kong said, “Longevity is reshaping how people across Asia think about retirement. We’re seeing people rethink what retirement means—not simply living longer, but living better. Financial independence, health, and well-being now define success in this new era of longevity.”

Living Better, Not Just Longer

The report shows that most Asians prioritize quality of life over longevity itself. Fewer than 1 in 10 respondents said they wanted to live longer regardless of circumstances, while half said they value living a meaningful life, and over one-third expressed a desire not to be a burden on others. When envisioning later life, people overwhelmingly said they hope to be financially independent, stay physically and mentally active, and age gracefully while maintaining their desired standard of living.

These findings highlight a strong desire for autonomy and wellbeing, with many viewing health and financial stability as deeply connected. Across all four markets, three-quarters of respondents believe that their financial wellbeing affects their physical and mental health, while 85% said financial wellbeing influences their mental state during retirement.

“People across Asia want to enjoy their extended lifespans with dignity, purpose, and freedom,” added Chiu. “That requires a shift in mindset—from saving for retirement to planning for longevity.”

Asia’s Financial Readiness Gap

Despite this awareness, less than half of respondents across Asia believe they will have enough funds to retire comfortably. Confidence varies widely across markets, from just 48% in Hong Kong to 77% in Indonesia. Mid-career individuals aged between 45 and 54 are the least optimistic about their preparedness, underscoring a need for more proactive financial planning.

Cash continues to dominate the average Asian portfolio, representing roughly half of non-property investments, reflecting ongoing caution toward risk. Many respondents cited fear of capital loss and lack of investment knowledge as reasons for avoiding higher-yielding assets. Property, once the cornerstone of Asian retirement planning, is losing its dominance. While most still regard it as important, only 3 in 10 now see it as less of a priority than before.

“Holding too much cash and relying solely on property can leave people vulnerable to inflation and income shortfalls,” said Chiu. “Building financial resilience means diversifying across income-generating and inflation-protected assets—and doing so early.”

Advice Matters: Professional Guidance Drives Confidence

The Report found a clear link between financial advice and confidence. Across all four markets, people who work with a financial planner are significantly more likely to feel ready for the future. In Indonesia, for example, 89% of those with a financial planner said they expect to have sufficient funds for retirement, compared to 63% of those without one. In Hong Kong, that gap widens further, with 62% of people who work with a planner feel confident versus only 29% without. Insurance agents and financial planners from insurance companies remain the most common sources of advice across Asia, followed by bank relationship managers and independent advisors.

“Professional advice can make all the difference,” Chiu added. “With the right guidance, people can move from simply saving to actively investing, giving them greater control over their future income and lifestyle.”
Generational and Market Insights Across Asia

Regional patterns reveal both progress and disparity. In Hong Kong, less than half (48%) of respondents believe they will have sufficient funds for retirement. However, many are taking action—around two-thirds (65%) plan to shift part of their cash into higher-return investments. In Malaysia, confidence is moderate, with 58% expecting to be financially ready. Many Malaysians expressed strong interest in pension solutions that provide steady retirement income and protection against inflation.

In contrast, Indonesia emerged as the most financially confident market, with 77% of respondents believing they will have enough savings for the future. Indonesians also show the willingness to diversify, with 69% saying they are now more open to investing for income rather than holding property. Meanwhile, the Philippines reflects both optimism and transition: while just over half (52%) of respondents feel financially prepared for the future, 73% now prefer income-generating investments over property (71%), signaling a generational shift in retirement thinking.

These market insights collectively underscore a growing recognition that living longer requires new investment habits, diversified portfolios, and a stronger focus on financial literacy.

The Report also highlights a common insight across generations. Younger, mid-life and older groups consistently ranked a work-free new chapter as their top priority when it comes to retirement outlook. This desire is strongest among the younger group (25-34) at 55% and the older group (60+) at 58%, while mid-life groups (45–59) show a more balance view with many leaning toward balancing work and life with continued employment at the same time.
A Call to Action: Building Longevity Confidence

As life expectancy continues to rise, the Report urges individuals, employers, and financial planners to rethink traditional retirement strategies. Manulife WAM advocates a more holistic approach to longevity—one that combines early financial planning, diversified investments, and continuous professional guidance to help people thrive through longer retirements.

“Longevity should be a source of optimism, not anxiety,” Chiu concluded. “With the right financial habits and guidance, people can turn longer lives into better lives—and that’s the vision driving our work at Manulife.”

Millennials and Gen Zs Prioritize Health, Purpose, and Financial Independence, But Health and Wellness Gaps Persist - New Manulife Philippines Study Finds

MANILA, Philippines – While millennials and Gen Zs in the Philippines are reshaping what it means to live well and live long, significant gaps between awareness and action jeopardize their health, wellness, and longevity aspirations, a new study by Manulife Philippines has found.

According to “#FYP: Future-proofing Young Pinoys: Examining Health and Longevity Perspectives, Sentiments, and Aspirations of Millennials and Gen Zs,” which was conducted among 500 respondents across the Philippines, younger Filipinos are placing greater emphasis on healthspan, purpose, and financial independence. However, the study also revealed that while 83% of young respondents have good knowledge about health and wellness, only 76% say they are taking sufficient action to consistently practice healthy habits.

“With a median age of 26.1, the Philippines has one of the youngest populations in Asia. Our latest study highlights the need to support younger generations in translating their health, wellness, and longevity aspirations into meaningful action. We found that millennials and Gen Zs are motivated to live healthier lives, but barriers like stress, excessive screen time, and sleep deprivation, among many others are holding them back from achieving this goal,” said Rahul Hora, President and Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Philippines.

Motivated to be healthy, but stress gets in the way; Millennial women among the most affected

The study found that millennials and Gen Zs are not short of motivation to pursue their health and wellness goals. While 64% said they are pursuing health to avoid getting sick, and 44% said they want to minimize potential medical expenses, many are equally driven by their personal well-being and self-image about feeling and looking good: 44% said they want to look good or fit, and 43% said they want to look youthful.

Younger Filipinos, especially women, are also putting more focus on healthspan, or the number of the years we live healthily, over lifespan. According to the survey, 60% of female respondents prefer to prolong their healthspans, while 53% of males prefer to prolong their lifespans.
Filipino millennials and Gen Zs face notable health and wellness gaps, from monitoring to their actual wellness behaviors:

- Young Filipinos show significant gaps in health monitoring (awareness vs what they actually monitor), particularly in mobility (24%), nutrition (23%), and cholesterol levels (20%). Gender differences are evident, with young women struggling more with nutritional monitoring (27%) and young men facing greater challenges in mobility monitoring (28%).
- Many young Filipinos find it difficult to consistently maintain healthy sleeping habits (20%), achieve work-life balance (19%), and follow a balanced diet (15%). Women report a larger gap in achieving work-life balance at 22%, compared to the 15% gap among men.
- Stress is the most prominent barrier to wellness, affecting 64% of respondents. Millennials report higher stress levels than Gen Zs (69% vs. 58%), and women are more affected than men (73% vs. 55%). Notably, 76% of millennial women say stress prevents them from pursuing their desired wellbeing—the highest among all generational and gender groups.
- Modern lifestyle habits further compound these issues, with excessive screen time impacting 48% and sleep deprivation affecting 45% of young Filipinos. Trends such as “bedrotting” and “doomscrolling” reflect how contemporary behaviors are undermining their wellness goals.
“We’re seeing that for young Filipinos, intent alone isn’t sufficient. While many are motivated to pursue healthier lives, they’re facing a complex mix of stressors and lifestyle gaps, which make it difficult to follow through. These habits quietly derail their ability to prioritize wellness. That’s why the next step is to find ways to embed wellness into their daily routine. By offering health and wellness-focused programs and collaborations with likeminded partners, we are helping them bridge the gap between intention and action, turning wellness goals into sustainable, everyday behaviors supporting their long-term health and longevity aspirations,” added Hora.

Younger Filipinos view age positively and prioritize attaining purpose and living independently than being illness-free

According to the study, 96% of millennials and Gen Zs surveyed believe aging is a natural process that should be embraced with positivity, while 91% of the respondents believe that living a meaningful life is more important than living a long one. The study revealed a striking perspective on aging priorities, with 83% of respondents believing that living independently and being able to do things that matter most to them is more important than being illness-free.

Millennials surveyed focus more on physical health and family relationships as they age. Gen Zs, on the other hand, lean toward self-discovery, purpose, and making an impact. Only 13% of both generations consider maximizing lifespan as a top priority, with men showing slightly higher interest (17%) compared to women (8%).

“The findings reveal that young Filipinos see aging not as decline, but as a chance to live with purpose and independence,” Hora said. “It is therefore crucial that we create opportunities and support systems for them to live better at every stage of their lives. This means investing in holistic wellness programs, accessible financial health education, as well as tools that address both physical and mental needs, tailored especially for younger generations navigating various stressors of the modern world.”

“As one of the country’s longest-serving insurers, Manulife Philippines is deeply committed to supporting younger generations of Filipinos in their journey toward financial independence and longevity. Through our innovative insurance and investment solutions, and our nationwide network of over 10,000 professional financial advisors, we aim to empower millennials and Gen Zs to live fuller, healthier lives with purpose and confidence as they age,” said Hora.
Financial independence: Younger Filipinos’ ultimate longevity concern

When it comes to living a longer life but also “adding life to years,” financial security tops the list of concerns for both generations. Among the respondents, 74% believe that longevity is a blessing only if they have sufficient financial resources, with running out of money being their greatest worry (61%). Millennials and Gen Zs agree that mental health is a top longevity concern (36% and 47%, respectively). Millennials surveyed are more concerned about keeping ties with children (37%), while Gen Zs are more concerned about living their desired lifestyle (39%).

Gaining financial independence is also a top longevity priority for young Filipinos (52%), followed by family relationships (36%) and physical health (33%). Women, however, prioritize financial independence significantly more than men (60% vs. 44%). This gender gap reflects broader structural realities women face in the Philippines. Despite having longer life expectancies (69.9 vs 63.4), women have lower labor force participation (52.9% vs 76.3%) and are prone to career interruptions due to family and caregiving responsibilities. These factors make financial independence especially urgent for women, who must plan for longer retirement years with potentially fewer financial opportunities.

Financial planning remains one of the many challenges the youth face. Gen Zs surveyed estimate needing PHP22.3 million to achieve financial independence upon retirement, while millennials estimate PHP18.4 million. Yet only 20% of respondents have very high confidence in achieving these goals. Despite the challenges, young Filipinos take proactive steps. Among those who prioritize financial independence, 65% save part of their income, 45% purchase insurance, and 43% actively broaden their financial knowledge. However, 68% admit that sustaining investments remains difficult.

“It’s encouraging to see today’s younger generations starting to take more proactive steps toward financial planning. We’re seeing a shift in mindset, where millennials and Gen Zs are actively saving, purchasing insurance, and expanding their financial literacy. These are promising signs,” said Aira Gaspar, President and Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Investments Philippines

“The key now is to help them bridge the gap between intention and sustained action, through accessible, flexible investment strategies that evolve with their life stages, financial capabilities, and aspirations. By enabling them with the right tools and guidance, we can help turn financial independence into a tangible, achievable reality for our younger customers in the Philippines,” added Gaspar.

Manulife Philippines, Erwan Heussaff Partner for Video on the Importance of Healthy Eating

MANILA, Philippines – Manulife Philippines, the local arm of leading international financial services provider Manulife, and its brand ambassadors, food content creator Erwan Heussaff and daughter Dahlia, premiered their third collaborative video, which emphasizes the importance of healthy eating.

The video, now live on Heussaff’s social media pages, shows the father-daughter tandem bonding at home on a rainy day and cooking tomato soup, highlighting that even small steps and simple recipes can make an impact on our overall health.
“Teaching kids to eat right at an early age is just as critical as instilling values like honesty or kindness. It sets the foundation for their life-l99ong health, discipline, and relationship with food,” Heussaff said. “Obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases once seen in adults, are now affecting kids. Healthy eating early can help prevent these long-term issues.”
A recent Manulife Philippines study found that 33% of Filipinos consider their current lifestyle as unhealthy, while 24% of respondents say they do not really know what is considered a healthy diet. Further, this year’s Manulife Asia Care Survey revealed that while people in the Philippines view physical health as the most important factor to living their desired lifespan, only 5 of 17 preventive actions are being taken by more than half of the respondents to stay healthy. With his collaboration with Manulife, Heussaff aims to show how small everyday habits can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

“Insights from our recent studies reveal Filipinos are aware of the importance of their physical health to living a better life. Despite the high level of awareness, there are still gaps in their action to fully attain a healthy lifestyle,” said Sonali Verma, Chief Marketing Officer, Manulife Philippines.
Verma added, “At Manulife, we remain committed to empowering Filipinos to take charge of their health, wellness, and financial security through our products and solutions. Additionally, our partnerships with trusted public figures like the Heussaffs help us communicate this message—making decisions easier and lives better for more Filipino families.”
Since joining wife Anne Curtis as a Manulife brand ambassador, Erwan has collaborated with the insurer to produce a video series, which supports Manulife’s commitment to enable Filipinos to live healthier and better lives. The first two featured healthy cooking tips and the company’s Impact Agenda initiatives with Haribon Foundation in Quezon Province. The Heussaffs also recently starred in Manulife Philippines’ latest brand campaign, “M Knows Better.”

Evolving View on Longevity: For Filipinos, Quality of Life Outweighs Lifespan - Manulife Asia Care Survey 2025

MANILA, Philippines – A shift in how Filipinos view longevity is emerging, as they prioritize quality of life more than simply living longer as they age, according to the Mapnulife Asia Care Survey 2025: "Embracing Longevity: Enjoying a Better Life." The comprehensive study, which surveyed 1,000 Filipinos, revealed that only 13% of respondents chose living a longer life as their top wish when they consider their older years, while 26% prioritize financial independence and 17% value staying physically, mentally, and socially active.
The Manulife Asia Care Survey 2025, which ran in January and February, explored attitudes around how the region views longevity, as global life expectancies continue to rise.
Among those who value quality of life over lifespan, the respondents’ desired lifespan averages 69 years—below the national life expectancy, which is projected to reach 73.2 by 2050—suggests a preference for a life of purpose, vigor, and independence over sheer longevity.
“Filipinos are redefining what it means to live a good life,” said Rahul Hora, President and Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Philippines. “They are no longer focused solely on longevity. Instead, they want to live better—with freedom, dignity, and the ability to enjoy life on their own terms. This shift challenges us to rethink how we support them—not just with insurance, but with holistic solutions that enhance their quality of life.”

Health concerns continue to rise, especially among younger Filipinos

The survey also revealed that health issues are a growing concern, particularly among Filipinos aged 25-34. Nearly 44% of respondents reported experiencing physical or mental health problems that affect their daily lives. Despite this, most Filipinos surveyed are not taking enough preventive action.
On average, more than half of the survey respondents engage in only 5 out of 17 recommended preventive health measures that can support a longer, healthier life. Critical indicators of long-term health—such as muscle mass and oxygen uptake—are monitored by just 16% of participants. These metrics are scientifically linked to longevity and overall vitality yet remain largely overlooked.
Despite this, 74% believe their current health habits are sufficient to protect their health as they age.
“There is a clear gap between awareness and action. Filipinos understand the importance of health, but many are not taking the necessary steps to protect it,” added Hora. “This disconnect could lead to long-term vulnerabilities, which will be challenging to address later in life. To bridge this gap, we encourage Filipinos to take more proactive steps, such as scheduling regular check-ups, adopting healthier lifestyle habits, and seeking guidance from healthcare professionals, to help safeguard their overall health and well-being.”

Filipinos face a retirement savings gap

The survey also highlighted the strong relationship between financial stability and health outcomes. A significant 80% of respondents believe that their financial well-being directly affects how long they can remain physically healthy. Similarly, 76% say it impacts their mental health and emotional resilience.

However, despite this awareness, the average retirement savings among Filipinos is only PHP 630,000—16% of the PHP 3.85 million they estimate they will need to retire comfortably.

“Filipinos recognize that wealth and health are deeply connected,” said Aira Gaspar, President and Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Investments Philippines. “However, their current savings and investment behaviors do not necessarily reflect this awareness. The gap between what they have saved and what they will need could compromise their ability to live independently and with dignity in later years.”

Retirement planning: A shift in priorities, but gaps remain

When it comes to preparing for retirement, cash remains king for many Filipinos. The survey found that 66% view keeping their money in cash or fixed deposits as one of their top 2 priorities, while 51% express they want to invest in property. However, more than half (54%) also expressed a desire for steady income streams during retirement—something that cash-heavy portfolios may not be able to provide, especially in the face of inflation and rising healthcare costs.
“We are seeing a shift in how Filipinos think about retirement,” Gaspar noted. “While they are starting to realize that relying solely on property or savings may not be enough, many still hold excessive cash, which raises their longevity risk or the risk that they might outlive their savings, particularly in the face of potential longer life expectancy.
Gaspar added, “At Manulife Investments, we empower Filipinos to create more holistic wealth portfolios by giving them diverse and affordable investment choices, which they can use as building blocks to mobilize their savings, receive recurring income streams and achieve financial independence throughout their lifetime. Today, Filipinos can choose from our suite of 22 unit investment trust funds (UITFs), including six income-paying UITFs, spanning multi-asset, fixed income, equity and real estate investment trusts (REITs) asset classes that can be accessed for as little as Php1,000.”
The value of professional financial advice is also evident in the data: 70% of those who work with financial planners believe they will have enough funds for retirement, compared to only 38% of those without such guidance.

Supporting Filipinos’ fresh definition of Longevity

As Philippine life expectancy continues to increase in the coming years, the need for comprehensive health and wealth planning becomes critical.
"The message from Filipinos is clear—they want to age with dignity, maintain their independence, and have the financial freedom to do what matters to them," Hora concluded. "At Manulife, we are committed to evolving our products and services to support this vision. That means offering solutions that go beyond medical and critical illness coverage to address health protection needs and offering investment options that can provide reliable income streams for a better, more fulfilling life.”

Manulife Philippines Continues Expanding its Impact Agenda with Zambales Reforestation Program

Manila, Philippines — As part of its global Impact Agenda, a long-term commitment to deliver meaningful programs that empower sustained health and well-being, drive inclusive economic opportunity, and accelerate a sustainable future to preserve the planet, the domestic arm of leading global insurer Manulife recently expanded its collaboration with leading nature conservation organization Haribon Foundation through the Forests for Life movement.

“As we reach and engage more communities across the country through our Impact Agenda, we will continue to strengthen our community investments that will not only help us build a better business to better the world, but also foster kindness, generosity, and the bayanihan spirit among many Filipinos,” said Rahul Hora, President and Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Philippines.

11,250 seedlings to be planted in 2024

Through Haribon Foundation, Manulife Philippines commits to plant 11,250 native tree seedlings, in Masinloc, Zambales this year. This expands Manulife’s collaboration with Haribon, which commenced in 2022 with a commitment to help restore Philippine rainforests by planting 15,000 seedlings in Quezon and Rizal provinces.

The reforestation area is part of the Zambales mountains called Important Bird and Biodiversity Area in the town of Masinloc, covering 30,000 hectares of land and has been home to various endangered bird and non-bird species. The area previously hosted chromite mining operations, which resulted in the destruction of its biodiversity. Today, reforestation and protection are much needed for the damaged ecosystem to recover.

To help advance positive environmental change, Manulife has been working on implementing its sustainability action plans. In 2022, Manulife contributed USD 25.1 million in total community investments globally. There are also 1.3 billion trees planted by Manulife Investment Management all over the world since 1985, testifying to its longstanding commitment to create more nature-positive world for its communities*.

Manulife Volunteer Days launched in 10 markets in Asia, including the Philippines

Employee giving and volunteering is also part of Manulife’s community engagement initiatives for its Impact Agenda. During the “Season of Giving” last year, the company launched its Manulife Volunteer Days, a week-long program that provided more than 56 volunteering opportunities for employees globally to volunteer for chosen organizations within their communities. These range from tree-planting, financial literacy activities for students, and other engagement activities for ethnic minorities, elderlies, and various communities in need.

In addition, Manulife also launched the Move for your Community in Asia, where more than 1,700 employees from 10 markets, including colleagues from Manulife Philippines, Manulife China Bank Life and Manulife Investment Management Philippines, accomplished various step goals in five days, achieving 34 million steps in total. These recorded steps were converted to community investments, such as the 900 Peso Smart learning kits for elementary school students in the Philippines through the Corazon Sanchez Atayde Memorial Foundation and Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation.

“Since 2017, our financial literacy program Peso Smart has been instrumental in promoting the value of basic financial skills such as saving, budgeting, and investing among young children,” Rahul added. “As Peso Smart has expanded over the years to cater to broader segments -- including parents, educators, and university students -- we hope we can financially empower more Filipinos to live worry-free and confidently, while securing a better future.”

Other community investments from the Move for your Community in Asia include lunches with reusable boxes for students in Cambodia from the Rabbit School across all its campuses; 10,000 lunches for students in Vietnam through the Lotus Charity Foundation; and a public sanitation facility and a clean water facility in Indonesia through Dompet Dhuafa.
