The Extra Extra Ordinary by MCAD

The Extra Extra Ordinary proposes a new sensory processor to attend thier contemporary everyday life with add-ons movements and sensitivities. As the title suggest, this is a unique and abstract way of looking at things shared among human and the non-human; and their correlation and disjoints as informed by contemporary objects, technology and culture. Also see the possibilities towards the generation of various social and material connections, finding ourselves simultaneously in the process of becoming and worlding.

One of the issues of our time is the growing tension to unlearn ethics between human and non-human worlds. The question on culture that we’ve inherited in the face of accumulated ecological catastrophes, of wars and the continuously increasing debts that are passed on to the coming generations. Our anxiety goes even further beyond traditional boundaries with technology invention all the time. Many of us have been addressing ideas of the Post-Human and that of New Materialism as a possibility of finding ways to think beyond human principles, reasons and perspectives. The Extra Extra Ordinary shares such concerns specific to our modern material conditions, and seeks to offer an alternative spacetime for us to exercise and explore how we can relate ourselves among things seen and unseen.

The Extra Extra Ordinary conceives many unparalleled sensibilities to operate the essence of life in detail, interexchanges and connections among matter, energy and life. With the circulation of these ideas, where agents such as audience become intrinsic parts of the media outputting the extraordinary celebration of every ordinary life takes on a poetic and imaginative turn.

The Extra Extra Ordinary is presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD), Manila and the Taipei Contemporary Art Center (TCAC). The show is generously supported by Edouard Malingue Gallery and the National Culture and Arts Foundation (NCAF).

Curated by Joselina Cruz and Esther Lu, the exhibition will include work by Tromarama, Chou Yu-Cheng and Gary-Ross Pastrana.

Funding the Future - MCAD

2018 marks the 10th anniversary of MCAD.

The Museum, which is part of the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde, is a free, not-for-profit institution that delivers programming and content that encourages engagement with art and culture, its practice and production, as well as its presentation and interpretation.

By fostering partnerships with a range of arts and cultural institutions, the past four years has seen MCAD’s programming advance rapidly. Very much aware of its contribution to local art making and its expanding role in the region, MCAD remains reflexive and responsive to changes in society, politics and the production of ideas.

Moving Forward

Having established a distinct identity and developed a regional presence, the Museum must continue to evolve and develop its programming to create an innovative and inclusionary paradigm where “free access for all” addresses not only a cross-section of social classes, but also of knowledges.

All funds raised will support the launch of five new programmatic incentives and continue our ambitious exhibition program over the next three years.

Conference – A yearly conference responsive to, and reflective of, the currents of global contemporary art and culture and the discourses that surround it.

Research –  The Museum plans to be a foundational base to support postgraduate research (at MA or PhD level) in the history and production of local design and material culture.

Publication – The Museum’s aim is to establish an in-house publishing arm and specialise in producing monographs of contemporary Filipino artists.

Residencies – Running biannually for both Filipino and International artists, the Residencies will aim to nurture and develop the work of mid-career artists by providing a space for the exploration of new work/ideas and/or progression of a current work.

Mentoring – To support the continued integration and development of the College of Saint Benilde and MCAD, a mentoring programme will run as a conduit for professional artists or designers from local, regional or international fields to work directly with a Benilde Students or Alumni.

Exhibitions – Our exhibition program remains central to the Museum’s programming and audience development. Annually we host three exhibitions within the Museum and one external exhibition within the Philippines.

The 10th anniversary fundraiser will consist of a group show made up of work donated by eminent local, regional and international artists, many of whom have been part of MCAD exhibitions and others who are supportive of its initiatives.

Whilst we encourage you to take part in the auction event, MCAD also accepts charitable, tax deductible donations and in-kind sponsorship.

Funding The Future — Exhibition Opening — 28th August 2018

The pre-auction group exhibition will open on Tuesday, 28th August 2018 from 6.00pm – 8.30pm at Corinthian Plaza, 121 Paseo De Roxas, Legaspi Village, Makati City.

The exhibition will be open Tuesday to Sunday 11.00am – 7.00pm from the 29th August to the 8th September 2018.

Auction — 8th September 2018

The ‘under the hammer’ auction event will take place from 2.00pm – 6.00pm on Saturday 8th September 2018 at Leon Gallery, Eurovilla 1, Rufino corner Legazpi Street, Legazpi Village, Makati.
