Plant a Tree for Free with Every GCash Transaction & Join GForest

GForest Gcash

Manila, Philippines – The Philippines is one of the most biodiverse archipelagos in the world and is home to over 50,000 described species of plants.

However, due to activities such as deforestation, habitat exploitation, waste disposal and pollution, the Philippines is rapidly losing numerous plant species that contribute to its vibrant tropical habitat. To combat the negative effects of climate change, GCash is actively helping to plant trees in the Philippines through GForest.

With GForest, all GCash users can contribute to the preservation of the environment – and you can too. When you plant trees virtually on GForest, GCash transforms these into real trees to support the preservation of our forest reserves.

How It Works: Earning Green Energy Points So You Can Start Planting Trees

For every successful GCash transaction, you can earn a certain amount of Green Energy Points and collect it 24 hours later in GForest in the app. You can collect green energy points when you Buy Load, Send Money, Pay Bills, Cash-In, or even when you register up to 20,000 steps per day from walking. Every transaction is a real contribution, so it’s important to collect energy every day.

When you have enough Green Energy points, you can plant a virtual tree that will be planted by GCash and its local and international partners in key locations nationwide.

There are different types of trees to choose from, including the new Cannonball Mangrove, the Red Mangrove, and sometimes, there are even limited edition trees that can be planted at certain times of the year, such as a limited edition Pine Tree in December 2023. You can choose between the different types of trees GCash offers, depending on Green Energy Points you have and what different types of trees are worth. Usually, the more energy points required to plant a specific tree, the more effective the tree will be in helping sequester carbon from the environment.

For Every Tree Planted on GForest, GCash Turns it into a Real One

GForest ensures that every virtual plant collected is converted into a real tree. To date, GCash has planted over 2.7 million actual trees in 14 key areas nationwide as of 2023). An estimated 346,000 trees have been planted in Luzon, 1.1 million in Visayas and 1.1 million in Mindanao.

An estimated 8,600 smallholder farming families have benefited from this initiative. GForest is not only helping the environment, it also helps improve the livelihood of farmers in climate change affected areas in the Philippines.

A Step-By-Step Guide On Using GForest

Using GForest and planting real trees from the comfort of your own home is easy as following four simple steps:

  1. Earn green energy points when you use GCash. Transactions like sending money, paying bills, buying load, and cashing-in your wallet will earn you points.

  2. Next, collect your green energy points after 24 hours of your transaction on the GForest dashboard. Tap on your points to collect them – you can also collect points from your friends!

  3. When you have enough points to plant a tree, head to the GForest virtual nursery and choose a tree to plant.

  4. Once you’ve selected a tree, exchange your points to plant a virtual free – and then, GCash and its partners will plant a reel tree on your behalf! You’ll even receive a certificate for your valuable contribution to the country's biggest digital eco-movement.

Through GCash, you can be part of a bigger digital eco-movement to rebuild our country’s forests. Keep giving back to the environment with a gift that will surely benefit it for many years to come. Be a green hero and contribute to rebuilding our forests – one digital tree at a time when you use GCash.

LTFRB 11, GCash, RTOA Davao Seal Partnership to Modernize Public Transport Payments

LTFRB 11, GCash, RTOA Davao Seal Partnership to Modernize Public Transport Payments

In line with its thrust toward an inclusive cashless ecosystem in the country, GCash inked a partnership with the Regional Transport Operators Association (RTOA) of Davao and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region XI.

This joint commitment will enable 3,000 taxi drivers and RTOA members to accept payments through the Scan to Pay feature of the GCash app. Davaoeños and tourists alike will be able to enjoy hassle-free transactions just by scanning the taxi’s QR code when paying for their metered fare.

The signing of the memorandum of agreement was attended by LTFRB Region XI Regional Director Nonito Llanos III, GCash AVP and Head of Enterprise Martin Limgenco III, RTOA President Ryan Sia, and RTOA Members.

“At GCash, we are steadfast in our goal of promoting finance for all. The rollout of the Scan to Pay option in public transportation in Davao is just the beginning. With the help of our stakeholders in the public sector, we believe that we can collectively find solutions to enhance the fare collection system in the Philippines,” said Cathlyn Pavia, GCash Associate Vice President for Public Sector and Partnerships.

Regional Director Llanos is hopeful that this development will receive positive response from the commuting public, especially with more merchants in the city transacting through GCash.

"We are happy that GCash has partnered with us in leveling up the services of our taxis here in the region — to provide an accessible, affordable, convenient and reliable transportation for Region XI through modernization and digitalization. That's why we are making history today with the partnership of RTOA, LTFRB Region XI, and GCash," Llanos said.

Sia welcomes this digital scheme as it provides security and convenience for both taxi drivers and commuters.

"Cashless transactions minimize the need for taxi drivers to prepare change for bills since riders will be paying the exact amount. Aside from that, this will also make transactions easier and more convenient for both parties," said Limgenco.

At present, there are over 6,000 GCash merchants in Davao City, including restaurants, hotels, resorts, and establishments.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas also rolled out its PalengQR PH Plus initiative in Bangkerohan Public Market last year and the public markets of Toril and Agdao earlier this year. Vendors in the aforementioned public markets are now accepting digital payments through GCash.

Filipinos, especially the unbanked, can enjoy a wide range of safe and convenient financial solutions such as Send Money, GLoans, and GGives as the country's leading mobile wallet continues to make finance accessible for all. Download the GCash app for free on Google Play and the App Store.

GForest Reports 52 Billion Grams of Carbon Reduced Since 2019

In celebration of International Zero Emissions Day, GForest announces that it has reduced a total of 52 billion grams of carbon through the various digital transactions done by its users on GCash. These day-to-day services include sending money, paying bills, and buying load.

Daily activities contribute to our carbon footprint which indicates the total greenhouse gas emissions related to these actions. Planting more trees aids in carbon sequestration where carbon dioxide is captured and stored, reducing its presence in the atmosphere and ultimately, minimizing climate change.

As a pioneer in the fintech industry and a committed supporter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, GCash encourages Filipinos to minimize their carbon emissions by giving incentives for digital transactions done through GForest.

GCash users earn green energy points for performing digital financial transactions in the app. The equivalent carbon reduced by going digital is converted into green energy points, which users can use to plant virtual trees. To ensure that the points given are based on actual carbon reduction, GCash tapped the expertise of China Beijing Environmental Exchange (CBEEX) to use science-based methodologies to compute these.

The virtual trees planted by users are then planted into actual trees by Gcash’s partner local and international organizations in strategic areas around the Philippines. After some time, these trees will also sequester carbon from the environment.

“Our partnerships with CBEEX and other established organizations in the Philippines for our reforestation efforts through GForest is a testament to how dedicated we are in addressing climate change. By employing sustainability practices and evaluation methods backed by science, we ensure that we are able to reach our targets,” said CJ Alegre, GCash Head of Sustainability.

Since its inception in 2019, GForest has planted 2.5 million actual trees in total, covering over 11,000 hectares across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, resulting in about 1.3 million tonnes of carbon sequestered. This has been made possible by its 14.4 million green heroes.

“Love knows no boundaries; we are free to love and protect anyone and everyone. You can embrace a worry-free life, knowing we’ve got your back,” said GCash VP of New Businesses Winsley Bangit.

Access to inclusive insurance was also one of the key messages highlighted during GTalks: “Werk With Pride”, an event recently hosted by the leading e-wallet, in line with its core vision to make financial inclusion a reality for all.

Bangit discussed how GInsure provides accessible and affordable financial products and protection for all.

“Here at GCash, our vision is “Finance for All” and we continue to look for ways to be more inclusive. The event was also attended by leaders from some of its key partner insurance companies namely FPG Insurance AVP Vinelle Haber and FPG Sales Officer Michael Taguidin, Singlife head of B2B2C Kame Amado, and Generali relationship business manager Glaudine Pelingon with Generali assistant manager Dainty Abriera.

GCash Highlights Security Measures at Asian Summit

GCASH ASIAN SUMMIT

With trust and security as its number one priority, GCash shares its best learning and practices in the recent Seamless Asia Summit held at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.

The Seamless Asia Summit gathers over 2,500 professionals from key regional banks, digital wallets, e-commerce retailers, and government agencies.

The country’s leading mobile wallet, together with four other top experts in the Southeast Asian region, led the discussion on protecting payments from digital fraud during the summit. GCash chief risk officer Ingrid Beroña joined representatives from ING Bank, Fintech Alliance PH, Sompo Holdings (Asia) Pte Ltd, and Commonwealth Bank. The summit also marked the first in-person meeting since 2019.

Beroña emphasized that financially inclusive services such as affordable insurance and investment products must come with peace of mind and secure transactions.

“Fraud is not just a problem of one institution but a problem of all. By liaising with our police officers, we learn from their stats which help us identify business vulnerabilities so that our platforms can adapt,” said Beroña.

She highlighted the importance of constant monitoring and continuous learning to make sure financial institutions remain ahead of the curve when it comes to protecting users against cybercriminals.

“Fraudsters are becoming more creative so it’s important to constantly keep an eye on new fraud schemes and modus operandi. We need to always be one step ahead by continuously looking out for possible business vulnerabilities so that we know what tools to use to combat these frauds, and to make sure that the platform is a safe environment,” added Beroña.

Cybersecurity platforms need to be highly adaptable to be able to respond to the ever-changing fraud landscape, emphasized Beroña, while constant cooperation with law enforcement authorities can help improve knowledge of how cybercriminals operate. The information from these collaborative investigations should then be used to conduct consumer education campaigns to protect users and give them a safer digital experience.

GCash has reached 100% roll-out for its world-class security feature, DoubleSafe. The measure uses state-of-the-art face ID technology to ensure that only the owner can access their account on another device. This means even if the users inadvertently give out their MPIN or OTP, their account cannot be accessed from a new device without scanning the owner's face.

GCash is also in close coordination with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), to intensify efforts in going after scammers and fraudsters.

AI can open Opportunities for Women, says GCash and Connected Women

AI can open Opportunities for Women, says GCash and Connected Women

The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents many opportunities for women. This was the key message emphasized by Connected Women, partner of leading mobile wallet GCash during its GTalks event, held in celebration of UN Women in Tech day.

Gina Romero, co-founder of Connected Women, explained how the organization is aligned with GCash's vision of financial inclusion through the AI training programs it provides for women, helping them qualify for remote employment, even without formal education.

Romero believes that women, regardless of background or financial standing, can work with AI. The rapid growth of emerging technologies and industries such as AI, coupled with the wider adoption of remote work, are creating opportunities for women to upskill and earn a livelihood from their homes while taking care of their families.

"I've had a diverse career, from pig farming to air cabin crew, before entering the tech industry. Anyone can learn the skills needed for the future of work. We need women in tech at all levels to create an equitable future. Connected Women ensures accessibility for women, including underserved groups, to participate in the digital economy,” said Romero.

“We are thrilled to be working with GCash, a company that truly exemplifies diversity in tech and leadership roles. GCash's commitment to fostering inclusivity aligns perfectly with our vision at Connected Women, and we are excited to collaborate with them to create more opportunities for women in the digital space,” added Romero.

“GCash stands for inclusion at large. With our partners, we aim to give women more opportunities towards financial freedom. More than just providing them with accessible financial services, GCash is also pushing for more opportunities for women in line with our goal to normalize women leaders in tech,” said GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon.

In collaboration with the country's leading mobile wallet, Connected Women enables its AI remote workers to easily receive their payments through GCash. The Connected Women community platform is now accessible through the Earn Money feature in the GCash app.

Since the partnership’s inception in March 2023, the feature has already garnered over 11,000 sign-ups. Based on Connected Women’s latest statistics report, 91% of respondents were not male (female, non-binary, prefer not to say), majority of whom are looking for remote work.

Romero was one of the speakers in the event entitled GTalks: Empowering Women in Tech. Alongside her were co-speakers UN Women country coordinator Lenlen Mesina, For the Women Foundation’s co-founder Michelle Alarcon, GCash president and CEO, Martha Sazon, GCash chief technology & operations officer, Pebbles Sy, and GCash chief people officer Robert Gonzales. This event was hosted by renowned broadcast  journalist Karen Davila.

Cordillera’s Most Wanted Timbog sa Joint Operation ng PNP at GCash

PNP GCASH OPERATION
