The local government of Santiago City in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry R2 - Isabela Provincial Office passed an ordinance institutionalizing the implementation of a bamboo development project.Mayor Joseph Salvador Tan signed the ordinance after the council approved the proposal during their 71st regular session on April 13, 2021, to support the response and recovery efforts of the government in mitigating the harmful effects caused by climate change.
The newly adopted ordinance will promote environmental protection through the establishment of bamboo nurseries and bamboo plantations in watershed areas, flood, and landslide-prone areas, idle and marginalized agricultural lands, upland areas covered by the Community Based Forest Management as well as banks of water bodies.
Bamboo, apart from its cheap production cost, is an ideal renewable resource and has carbon capture characteristics that can significantly contribute to lessening pollution, flood, and soil erosion.
Further, the ordinance will promote economic development through the development of competitive, sustainable, and environment-friendly industries that will provide employment opportunities and improve the quality of life among Santiaguenos.
