Essilor Celebrates Better Vision with World Sight Day

ESSILOR WORLD SIGHT DAY

Since the outbreak began in 2020, people have been spending a major part of their days looking at their screens, especially as schools and work have shifted virtually. As a result, there have been increased cases of eye strain, eye fatigue and myopia progression. This year, Essilor celebrates better vision with World Sight Day and their mission to help everyone in the world to “see more, be more and live life to its fullest”

“Our sense of sight is essential to our day to day living. But with increased screen time during the lockdown we were exposed to UV and harmful lights, we have pushed our eyes to the limits which may have led us to experience eye strain and eye fatigue more often,” said Ms. Jinky Navo-Palteng, Marketing Manager of Essilor Philippines.  The celebration of World Sight Day reminds everyone to visit their eye doctor regularly and good eye health habits.”

The Woman Behind the Vision

Ideal Vision Center (IVC) is already a household name in the eye health care industry for more than three decades but according to Joy Go, IVC assistant vice president for marketing and merchandising, the vision should not stop there. She believes that the company’s reputation should be treated as an opportunity to continue to educate, innovate and research for the benefit of Filipinos.

“In the Philippines, eye health care is not a priority and we aim to change that mindset. It’s a long, ongoing process especially with the fast-changing business landscape but we look forward to seeing the light at the end of it,” Go says.

Go, whose grandfather launched Ideal Optical, is confident and determined to achieve their goals. As head of branding, marketing and merchandising, Go is also always finding new opportunities to explore, expand and discover new solutions to make eye care accessible to everyone.

Despite growing up in a family of eye care professionals, Go’s involvement in the eye care industry is not a childhood dream. Her initial passion was on food which explains why she has a degree in Culinary Arts and Related Services. Her interest in eyewear and eye care was piqued only when she started working part-time in IVC.

“More than the technicalities behind being an optometrist, I find the marketing and research side of the business very endearing. Aside from that, I am also very interested in eyewear fashion,” Go stated.

Go got her degree in optometry at the Centro Escolar University and joined the family business in 2002. She still loves to cook and says the key to finding a balance between two passions is “you don’t give up one or the other but enjoy both at the same time.”

The eye doctor also noted that being in the eye care industry gave her a meaningful purpose of taking care of other people’s needs and well-being. It has also become important to her to provide only the best vision solutions. “We always try to find the most advanced products, to offer more advanced and better products to our patients.”

To be able to do that, Go noted the importance of partnering with brands that share their vision. Hence, their partnership with Essilor, the world’s number one ophthalmic company that offers complete vision solution through its wide range of products including Crizal, Transitions and Varilux, gives them an opportunity to provide clients an access to world-class eye care products. “Partnering with Essilor for more than 32 years is the best move we made to improve our service to our customers. We at IVC, knows that Essilor share the same vision with us - to offer top-notch eye health care to Filipinos,” she said.

Aside from this vision, the eye doctor furthered about her personal goal on leaving a legacy in the eye health care industry. “It is my ambition, through IVC, to leave a legacy and be a part of every Filipino’s eye health care routine. It is a long and challenging path but we will never stop improving and finding solutions so that quality eye health care will be more convenient and accessible to all,” Go says.

Get the Perfect Lens Color for Your Lifestyle

People usually  carry  two eyeglasses -- one for reading and another for outdoor sun protection. Adaptive lenses can address both needs, thus you only need one pair of eyeglassess for reading and for sun protection.

One of the most popular brands of adaptive lenses is Transitions. Made by Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, the lenses continuously adapt to changing light conditions, reduce glare, minimize eye fatigue and block 100 of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Using Chromea7 technology, Crizal Transitions lenses offer and let you enjoy life in the best light.

Choose a Transitions unique color to match your lifestyle.

Amber. The tint reduces glare, blocks harmful blue light and enhances depth perception. It provides better vision on cloudy days. Amber-colored lenses are best for those who like sports that involve judging distances such as fishing, baseball, golfing, hunting and cycling.

Amethyst. Trendy and fashionable, this color can also help in navigation during difficult weather conditions like when there is mist or fog because it blocks the glare from excessive white light. It is best for hiking, hunting or playing tennis.

Sapphire. Like amethyst, sapphire is aesthetically pleasing - perfect for fashionistas. The tint brings out the contrast between green and orange and improves color and contour perception. It is best suited for people who like target shooting and hunting.

Emerald. Lenses with an emerald tint transmit all colors evenly and dim any glare while brightening shadowy areas. They maintain color distribution rain or shine and are good for all outdoor activities.

Caring for our Most Overused Body Sense

The eyes are perhaps the most misused, ignored and overused part of the body. We use it while working in front of the computer, staying connected throughout the day via our mobile phones and tablets and even while entertaining ourselves watching movies and videos. Until we feel there’s something wrong, we tend to ignore our eyes because they are just there.

Now, more than ever, our eyes suffer even more abuse. According to Dr. Joy Go, assistant vice president for marketing and merchandising of  Ideal Vision Center (IVC), Because of all the electronic gadgets we use continuously throughout the day IVC deemed it necessary to upgrade its campaign from combating computer vision syndrome to digital vision syndrome.

“In the early 2000s, we had PCs so we’re talking about computers then. But now that almost everyone has a smartphone or a tablet, our eyes are constantly exposed to harmful blue light and at such a close range that they are easily absorbed by our eyes,” said Dr. Go,  a graduate of optometry from the Centro Escolar University. Since she became a doctor and joined the family business, she has been involved in various eye health care campaigns to educate the public on the importance of eyecare and prevention of vision problems.

Staring at our gadgets for eight straight hours can be very harmful because they emit harmful blue light. Our eyes have holes, called iris, through which lights pass, she explained.  “These harmful lights, when absorbed excessively by our retina, can cause eye damage and blindness.”

So how does one prevent vision problems? First, Dr. Go said, one should set a time limit on electronic device usage.  “Don’t stare at your gadgets continuously for long hours, especially not at night before going to bed because that’s the time when our body needs to “heal and recuperate.””

Those who are working in the office must practice the 20/20 rule. “After every 20 minutes of working in front of the computer, take a break and look outside for about 20 minutes, or if not possible, five to ten minutes. Then you go back to working again.”

She added that proper distance from the computer should also be observed. “It helps a lot. Kasi hindi lang mata ang masisira, pati ulo at likod.”  It is a must to blink and rest our eyes from time to time.

Lastly, Dr. Go stressed on the importance of wearing protective glasses with right lenses. “We want to raise awareness on the importance of wearing protective glasses which mean fewer headaches and less eye fatigue and damage caused by harmful lights from computer and devices screens.”

As a testament to their advocacy campaigns, IVC has been working with Essilor, the leading ophthalmic company in the country, for more than three decades now. Both companies share the same vision of raising awareness on proper eye care. The partnership also helps IVC provide advanced products to their clients.

Among the Essilor brands available at Ideal Vision are Crizal, Essilor’s flagship brand that provides complete protection against harmful UV rays; Transitions, the leading photochromic lenses that adapt to the changing light indoors and outdoors; and Varilux, the world’s most advanced progressive lens for those 40 years old and above.

Dr. Go is hopeful that one day, people will realize how important vision care is. She considers it a challenge and finds the thrill in finding new ways to raise awareness on quality eye care for Filipinos.

Understanding Age-Related Vision Problems

Celebrate National Sight Saving Month by learning more about age-related vision problems. Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, shares common age-related vision changes and tips on how to minimize the risks:

Blurred vision. Reading printed materials can become less clear, in part because the lens in your eyes becomes less flexible as you age. Objects can also appear hazy or out of focus at certain distances. When this happens, take time to rest your eyes for a few seconds. It also helps to exercise your eye muscles by regularly blinking.

Dry eyes. Aging also causes our bodies to produce fewer tears. Some people experience a burning sensation, stinging or eye discomfort related to dry eyes. Use artificial tears as needed throughout the day for comfort or best consult your eye doctor for prescription dry eyes medication.

Sensitivity to bright lights. When driving, you may notice additional glare from other cars, street lights or sun reflecting off windshields. This is because, as you age, the light entering your eyes tend to scatter rather than be focused precisely on the retina. It is important to be more cautious when driving and if possible, avoid driving at night.

Decreased color vision. While aging, normal colors can also decline in sensitivity, causing things around you to become less bright and contrast between different colors becomes less noticeable.

Correct age-related vision problems with Varilux® X seriesTM, a new premium progressive lens designed to help people 40 years old and above achieve clearer, better vision.

Manufactured by Essilor, this latest innovation progressive lens is developed using Xtend™, a new revolutionary technology which provides seamless vision between distances – near, mid or far. It also eliminates eye constraints, reduces glare and vividly brings out colors for wearers to enjoy edge-to-edge clarity.

Celebrate National Sight Saving Month by understanding age-related vision problems and achieving clearer, better eyesight. See life more clearly with the Varilux® X seriesTM progressive lenses.

Facts and Fiction About Wearing Eyeglasses

Growing up we often encounter all kinds of misconceptions about wearing eyeglasses along with countless myths about vision problems.

How can we differentiate fact from fiction?

Wearers become dependent on their eye glasses, they will never take them off. FICTION

Prescription glasses correct your vision. Day-to-day tasks are easier because everything is clear. You constantly wear your glasses not out of dependence, but because all your visual difficulties disappear.

Wearing eye glasses will not aggravate your vision problems. FICTION

Eye glasses are aids to improve vision. They will not add to your sight problems. Our vision naturally deteriorates with age, so don’t fret because it is not the eye glasses’ fault. Regular eye check up will help identify the problem and the right prescription glasses can help you see clearly.

Wearing someone else’s glasses will ruin your eyes. FACT

This is so true. Wearing the wrong prescription glasses for a long period can cause headache and nausea. Go for an eye check-up and determine the right prescription for you.

Ready-made reading glasses may not address your vision problems. FICTION

Store bought reading glasses are not customized for the wearer mainly because the prescription grade is the same for both right and left lenses. Most people with vision problems have different prescription grades for each eye. Headache, eye strain and even nausea can result from wearing reading glasses that are not your actual prescription. Best to visit you eye doctor for a customized reading glasses prescription.

It is important that we take the necessary precautions in taking care of our eyes but we have to be aware of what’s true and what is not.

For the ultimate in eye care, Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company recommends Varilux® the optimum solution to achieve natural, sharper vision at any distance.

Don’t let myths keep you from proper eye care. Be confident and wear glasses with Varilux®. For more information, visit Essilor’s website at www.essilor.com.ph, and follow @EssilorPH on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Clear and Healthy Eyes at 40

Let’s give our eyes extra loving care so that we can enjoy clear vision even as we grow old.
People ages 40 years old and above often suffer from age-related health problems like near vision blurriness. Our eyes work long hours and we should nourish them properly. Having clear vision allows us to have happy moments with the people we love.

Eat healthy food for healthy vision. Aside from Vitamin A which sharpens eyesight, nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin C and E can help ward off age-related vision problems for adults like cataracts. Eating a well-balanced diet can also help prevent other health problems such as Diabetes, which is the number one cause of blindness among adults.

Avoid excessive exposure to unhealthy blue lights. At this age of technology, we are being exposed to harmful blue lights from gadgets, laptops and monitors. Too much exposure can cause vision problems such as Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Limit your time in front of the screen and break every now and then.

Get a regular eye check-up. Regular vision consultation is essential to prevent or detect signs of vision problems.

Choose the right eyewear. The right kind of prescription glasses will not only help us see better but will also make your life easier and more convenient, especially as we age. Trusted by eye experts worldwide, Varilux®, world leader in progressive lens technology, corrects one of the natural eye problems caused by aging: presbyopia or near vision blurriness. This leading progressive lens provides sharp, clear vision and smooth transition between distances: near, far and in-between.

Developed by the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, Essilor, all Varilux® lenses are tested to ensure customer satisfaction, including fast and easy adaptation. They are also perfect for those with active lifestyles.

To protect your eyes from harmful lights, Varilux® is also available in Crizal™ Transitions® which shields the eyes from harmful ultra-violet rays. Its multi-coat technology can also provide complete protection against dust, smudge, glare, scratch and water.

Unravelling Myths About Vision Changes

As we age, our senses tend to become less sharp. Our vision, in particular, undergoes significant changes. The eyes gradually lose the ability to adapt and change focus quickly. This naturally developing condition is called “presbyopia.”

Presbyopia usually starts around the age of 40 and affects even those without a history of vision problems. Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, estimates that those with presbyopia number more than 500 million worldwide

“People with presbyopia have a hard time reading fine print and need to hold reading materials farther than arm’s length,” says Essilor Philippines general manager Dr. Emelita Roleda. “At the same time, they have problems seeing objects at close range. We recommend to those suffering from this condition to use progressive lenses to correct near and distance vision.”

Although presbyopia is a natural age-related condition, there are misconceptions about it. As previously stated, one myth about it is that it is preventable. It is not a disease but a natural part of aging, thus unavoidable even for those with 20/20 vision. Some people also believe that correcting presbyopia can worsen the condition. But if untreated, presbyopia will only lead to eye fatigue and make daily tasks harder to do.

Another mistaken notion is that few solutions for presbyopia are available. But in this day and age, near vision blurriness is easily manageable. One can use reading glasses which basically aids in seeing print clearly. Eyeglasses with bifocal or progressive lenses are also available. A bifocal lens features two areas of vision correction, near and far, which are divided by a distinct line that sits horizontally across the lens. Progressive lenses are a more sophisticated solution because not only do they eliminate the visible lines found on bifocals, but they also provide a more natural correction of presbyopia.

Using advanced research and technology, Essilor offers an effective way to seamlessly correct presbyopia while at the same time providing updated aesthetics, giving the wearer a more youthful appearance. Varilux®, the world leader in progressive lenses, gives dynamic clarity and greater comfort in any distance. It’s perfect to use whether you read a book, use a computer, or look into the horizon while traveling.

“Varilux® progressive lenses are specifically designed to give the wearer sharper, clearer and effortless vision every day,” says Dr. Roleda. “The lenses are sophisticated, bespoke creations designed with the most advanced technology to be a perfect fit according to the optical and facial profile of the wearer.”

Correct presbyopia with proper lenses. Ask an eye care professional about the Varilux® progressive lenses suited to your needs. For more information, visit www.essilor.com.ph, and follow @EssilorPH on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Better sight, better life with Piolo Pascual and Essilor Vision Foundation

Top actor and eye health awareness advocate, Piolo Pascual, was recently appointed by the Essilor Vision Foundation (EVF) to personally lead the launch of its Eye Can Succeed advocacy campaign.

Eye Can Succeed aims to provide free eye check-ups and free prescription eyeglasses for 10,000 Filipino public high school students as they pursue higher education and achieve success. The campaign supports EVF’s commitments to eliminate poor vision and its lifelong consequences, as well as to grant the underprivileged the opportunity to live a better life through better sight.

During the Eye Can Succeed kick-off at Rizal High School, Pascual gave a brief talk to inspire Filipino senior high school students to persevere more in their studies and never stop reaching for their dreams despite the challenges that come their way. He said, “I know how hard it is to study when faced with problems, especially poor eyesight. This campaign is set to alleviate this concern. So now, it’s up to you, students, to do your best and reach for your dreams.”

Four thousand students in grades 11 and 12 went through a series of eye exams conducted by volunteer eye care professionals. Those who showed signs of vision problems received free prescription glasses.

Lauren Wyper, Essilor Vision Foundation (EVF) associate director of communications remarked, “Launching the Eye Can Succeed campaign in the Philippines not only helps fulfill the foundation’s mission of enabling Filipinos to have better lives through better sight, but also helps spread awareness on the importance of proper eye care through an expanded network consisting of academic institutions, the media, and local campaign ambassador Piolo Pascual.”

Essilor Vision Foundation, Piolo Pascual Launch Eye Can Succeed Campaign

Healthy eyesight is essential to learning and achieving success. It allows us to pick up skills and also enables us to achieve our tasks. Unfortunately, at least ten in every 100 Filipino students suffer from poor eyesight. This concern has led Essilor Vision Foundation (EVF) to team up with leading actor and brand ambassador Piolo Pascual to launch Eye Can Succeed, a program geared at providing free eye check-ups and free prescription eyeglasses to help 10,000 senior high school students pursue higher education and achieve success.
` EVF kicked off the advocacy campaign at Rizal High School, which has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest secondary school in the world, by having licensed eye health professionals discuss the importance of healthy vision, proper eye care, and optometry as a career option for Grades 11 and 12 students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) academic strand. With the assistance of volunteer optometrists, EVF examined the school’s 4,000-strong Grades 11 and 12 students and distributed free prescription glasses to students who are in need.
The campaign is focused on senior high school students who are vulnerable to vision problems due to long hours of reading and exposure to blue light from digital devices like laptops and computers. They are also at a critical stage in their lives, where the pressure of choosing a career path looms before them. EVF aims to ease some of their concerns by giving them free eye examinations and eyeglasses when needed, so they can have clear vision which is critical to pursuing their studies and achieving their dreams.
“Poor eyesight is a rampant issue among young Filipinos simply because very few are aware on the importance of having a regular eye check-up,” noted Essilor Philippines marketing manager Jinky Navo. “Through Eye Can Succeed, which we have initiated with our brand ambassador Piolo Pascual, we aim to highlight the importance of good vision in achieving one’s dreams and success.”
As Essilor’s brand ambassador, Piolo is a strong advocate of healthy eyesight for Filipinos. He believes that the campaign will not only help students succeed in the near future, it will also help them perform well in their daily tasks and see life clearly. He said, “Education plays a huge role in the future of these young Filipinos, and poor eyesight will only hinder their progress in learning. By giving them thorough eye check-ups and access to free prescription eyeglasses, they will no longer struggle with vision problems in their lessons, allowing their natural intelligence to shine through.”
This perspective is shared by Lauren Wyper, Essilor Vision Foundation (EVF) associate director of communications. She said, “It is alarming to learn that many of our target public school students have never had their eyes checked up at all. Launching the Eye Can Succeed campaign here in the Philippines not only helps fulfill the foundation’s mission of enabling Filipinos to have better lives through better sight, but also enables us to spread awareness on the importance of proper eye care through an expanded network consisting of academic institutions, the media, and local campaign ambassador Piolo Pascual.”
Virginia Membrebe, Rizal High School principal, remarked, “We are very grateful and honored for being the first to benefit from EVF’S Eye Can Succeed school tour. Through the free eye check-ups and prescription glasses of the campaign, our students are given a great opportunity to have better vision which is vital for their education.”
The Essilor Vision Foundation is committed to eliminating poor vision and its lifelong consequences, and to providing underprivileged people the opportunity to live a better life through better sight. Multi-Coated Lenses for a Multi-Screen Lifestyle

Multi-tasking is perfect for getting chores done much faster at home. However, when there is technology involved, you might want to think twice before spending long periods of time in front of multiple screens.

Research from Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, share that one in four kids spend more than three hours a day on gadgets. These studies also show that two in five Millennials, one in three GenX-ers, and one in four Baby Boomers spend at least nine hours between TVs, computers, smartphones, tablets and other devices each day. All this eyeballing comes at a cost as more and more people suffer from eye irritation, dryness, blurry vision and even back and neck aches – all symptoms of digital eye strain.

“Digital eye strain can cause discomfort in short term and potential danger to vision in long term,” states Dr. Emelita Roleda, general manager of Essilor Philippines. “It can be made worse with the use of small font size on devices, the increase of amount of blue light emitted by digital screens, and the total time spent staring at monitors. “

According to further research done by Essilor, continuous absorption of toxic blue light over long periods of time can lead to progressive degeneration of visual cells. It can cause serious vision problems such as cataracts and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

With that in mind, Essilor presents long-lasting eye protection in the form of Crizal® Prevencia multi-coated lenses. Crizal® Prevencia’s light scan technology selectively filters bad blue light and significantly reduces retinal cell death that causes vision problems. At the same time, it lets in good light that regulates sleep and mood and boosts brain activity. It also benefits from the best Crizal® technology, which protects the wearer from glare, smudges, scratches, dust and water, guaranteeing clear vision in all circumstances.

Given the increased dependence on using digital devices for both business and leisure, exposure to harmful blue light is inevitable. However, what can be done is to prevent the onset of vision problems.

“It is better to be cautious and be preventive than face the consequences later on,” remarks Dr. Roleda. “With Crizal® Prevencia, you minimize the risk of digital eye strain, can still be able to connect to your digital devices, and maintain a healthy vision.”

Give Your Eyes a Break

Summer is best known as the season of glare-related eyestrain, when you experience stinging of the eyes because of too much concentrated sunlight. But did you also know that eyestrain can be caused by other factors? Indoors, your eyes can also suffer long-term damage after facing the TV, gadgets or computer monitors at less than a foot away.

While light is an essential part of daily life – helping you see, regulating your body clock, and even providing you with much-needed Vitamin D – too much of it can cause painful eye conditions, including eyelid twitches, eye pain and extreme sensitivity to bright light. In severe cases, overexposure can permanently damage your central vision. Harmful blue light from artificial sources such as electronic devices causes retinal cell degeneration, while ultra-violet radiation from the sun contributes to the development of cataracts.

“Everyone, no matter the age or gender, should protect their eyes daily from bad effects of excessive exposure to light,” shares Dr. Emelita Roleda, Essilor Philippines general manager. “The effects of overexposure to UV rays and harmful blue-violet light may only be visible during adulthood, when vision problems like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) set in, so we highly advice the Filipino public to take preventive measures against them.”

Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, has come up with a solution that protects vision: Crizal® Prevencia multi-coated lenses, which selectively filters bad blue light and lets in essential good light needed for well-being.

“Essilor has undergone a rigid and thorough process in the creation of Crizal® Prevencia,” explains Dr. Roleda. “Its advanced light scan technology enables us to protect our eyes from irreversible eye conditions which threaten healthy vision.”

In addition to using Crizal® Prevencia lenses, she highly advices proper eye care. “Start by getting a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year,” she says. “Your eye doctor can determine the present condition of your eyes and help you take preventive or protective measures regarding possible vision problems.”

Another way to reduce the risk of eyestrain is taking frequent breaks from reading or monitor use, shares Dr. Roleda.

Lastly, she gives some sound sartorial advice when outdoors: “This summer, load your eyeglasses with Crizal® Prevencia lenses containing E-SPF 25. Then, pair your glasses with a nice hat or a sturdy umbrella.”

Indeed, eyesight is among the most important senses, but it receives less care than it deserves. By reducing strain, limiting exposure to harmful light, and making use of eyewear like Crizal® Prevencia lenses, you can protect your eyes all day long and ensure many more years of healthy vision.
