SM Prime Invests in Future Sustainability Leaders with Scholarship Program

Inspired by the late Henry Sy Sr.'s belief in the power of education and driven by their commitment to sustainability, leading integrated property developer SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) has launched a scholarship program in partnership with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

Aptly called the "SM Sustainability Scholarship," the initiative reflects SM Prime's commitment to both educational access and sustainability stewardship.

The program will fully support ten deserving students through their undergraduate studies at UPLB, providing them with the opportunity to pursue degrees in either Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology or Bachelor of Science in Forestry. These fields align with SM Prime's focus on building resilient communities and fostering a sustainable future.

The scholarship recipients, meticulously chosen for their academic excellence and dedication to sustainability, were formally recognized during a meet-and-greet gathering at UPLB, marking the start of their journey as SM Sustainability Scholars.

Each scholar will receive a full scholarship covering tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, and a book allowance, ensuring they can focus on their studies without financial worries.

During the gathering, College of Human Ecology (CHE) Dean Dr. Jennifer Amparo expressed that the pursuit of sustainability is most effectively undertaken collaboratively.

“CHE is one of the colleges that puts a premium on interdisciplinarity and trans-disciplinarity because we believe that in sustainability, you don’t work in silos. We need to work together and build each other’s skills, know-how, and also our programs together to ensure sustainability,” she said.

“I would also like to thank SM Prime for putting emphasis on this scholarship. SM Prime did not just provide the finances or scholarship. They invested the time to really meet our scholars and provided other support mechanisms to ensure that our scholars thrive in their academic lives. This is also a manifestation of SM’s commitment to sustainability by really developing our future sustainability leaders,” she added.

College of Forestry and Natural Resources’ Prof. Marilyn Combalicer also extended the college’s support to the scholars on behalf of the college’s dean, Dr. Marlo Mendoza: “We hope to continue nurturing such meaningful collaboration and initiatives that enhance our educational experience and initiatives for our students. Rest assured that we will continue providing support to our students in ensuring their growth and success in both academia and beyond.”

Meanwhile, SM Prime AVP and Head of Marketing, PR and Corporate Communications, Rida Reyes-Castillo, echoed that the fundamental values of the company are intricately interwoven with both education and sustainability.

“SM Group’s founder, Mr. Henry “Tatang” Sy, Sr. believed that education is a great equalizer, and he envisioned that sending one child to college would create ripples of social good not just for families but for an entire community,” she said. “The improvement of the well-being of the youth and the partner communities is something that we at SM invest in.”

SM Prime, UPLB Team Up for Sustainability Scholarship

SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SM Prime) has partnered with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) to further promote the country’s pursuit of sustainable development.

Through a scholarship grant, SM Prime aims to assist select students pursue undergraduate degrees in Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology (BSHE) and Bachelor of Science in Forestry (BSF) – courses geared towards sustainability.

The scholarship will be awarded to students from low-income households in Pasay City intended to provide better employment prospects and help reduce poverty and inequality, which are major obstacles to sustainable development.

Collaboration for innovation and sustainability
In an interview, UPLB Chancellor Dr. Jose Camacho, Jr. shared his optimism about the partnership, citing the impact of education, especially sustainability-related fields of studies, in social and economic mobility.

“The scholarship will enable more students to pursue their studies in areas related to sustainability such as environmental science, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture. By investing in education in these areas, we are preparing a new generation of leaders who will have the knowledge and skills to address the complex environmental and social challenges facing our world today,” Dr. Camacho said.

“It will encourage research and development in areas related to sustainability. By providing support for students to pursue advanced studies, we are creating a pipeline of future researchers and innovators who can develop solutions to pressing environmental and social problems,” he added.

Aside from enabling students to pursue their education without financial burden, the UPLB chancellor believes that the scholarship can produce competent leaders capable of solving complex environmental and social challenges, and create a pipeline of innovative researchers.

He further stressed how fostering collaborations and innovation in sustainability between the academic community and the private sector can lead to new environmentally and socially responsible products, technologies, and services that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.

The SM Prime Sustainability Scholarship is open to students from Pasay City, under UPLB's BSHE and BSF programs with an annual gross family income of not more than PhP150,000.00

SB Corp., UP Los Baños ink pact opening MSME Finance Institute

Body The Small Business Corporation (SB Corp) has forged a partnership with the University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) to help boost an inclusive and integrated entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem for Filipino entrepreneurs through the MSME Finance Institute at the State University’s campus in Los Baños, Laguna.

The SB Corp.–UPLB partnership will provide entrepreneurs continuous access to technology, knowledge and information, research and development network, and infrastructure such as the Fabrication Laboratories and Shared Service Facility (SSF). Throughout different phases of the enterprise, appropriate funding will also be made available in the form of loans or equity financing.

“With the state university’s ability to provide a wide array of services such as infrastructure, expertise, knowledge and technology to startup and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the partnership would produce very good results,” SB Corp. President and CEO Ma. Luna Cacanando said.

Cacanando added that financing access and mechanism will bring the products of research and development closer to the market and facilitate technology commercialization through business startup models.

The SB Corp.-UPLB partnership is anchored on the i3s Strategy or Inclusive, Innovation and Industrial Strategy, which aims to build a strong government-academe-industry collaboration that includes innovation and entrepreneurship and human resource development.

Under the agreement, SB Corp will provide MSMEs with risk-based lending technology, risk-based financing and mindset, financial education, access to industry linkages through DTI’s network, equity financing facility, low-cost lending through the Pondo sa Pagbabago at Pag-asenso (P3) Program, access to markets and industry, among others.

On the other hand, the UPLB through the Center for Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship (CTTE) and Department of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (DAME) will provide startups and MSMEs technical and entrepreneurship trainings, business degree programs, research and development funds/grants from the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Agriculture, and Commission on Higher Education, technology business incubation, Fablab, co-working space, among others.

UPLB Chancellor Dr. Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. said the partnership will provide a dedicated space for collaborative endeavors between UPLB researchers and partner organizations.

“This partnership is very important since the University has been pushing forward the technology and commercialization of UPLB’s wide research and knowledge products,” Sanchez said.

“UPLB will be even more responsive to the various needs of the industry sector, particularly for those who are involved in agriculture and entrepreneurship activities,” he added.
