Ambie Abaño started painting and exhibiting in 1986. In the following year, she won

the Grand Prize in the Painting Category of the Art Association of the Philippines Open Art

Competition. In 1998, she started to create prints at the workshop of the Philippine Association

of Printmakers in CCP Complex where she continues to work, conduct workshops and actively

participate in printmaking projects. In 2006 her explorative print won the Grand Prize in the

Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards. In 2017 her woodcut was among the Winning Works' at

the Hida-Takayama lInternational Woodblock Prints Triennale in Japan. As the first recipient of

the Alliance Française de Manille - Philippine Artist Residency Program, she went on a three-

month artist residency at the Cité Internationale des arts in Paris in 2011 while also attending

printmaking workshop at la Taille Douce. In 2012, as grantee of the Asian Cultural Council, she

spent a six-month artist residency in New York-at the International Studio and Curatorial

Program for three months and attended workshops at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking

Workshop. Throughout her practice, she has mounted 23 solo exhibitions and participated in

over a hundred group shows in the Philippines and abroad. For the first time, she mounts a

solo exhibition at the Galleria Duemila from July 13-August 31 2019.

Danny Kingad Excited To Share The Stage With Fellow Team Lakay Members

Danny “The King” Kingad is gearing up to face Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Reece “Lightning” McLaren at ONE: DAWN OF HEROES in front of his compatriots on August 2 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.

Kingad will be one of five athletes from Team Lakay who will see action on the card. 

When he was young, Kingad was a troubled teen treading on the wrong path. Eventually, he was course-corrected after joining the Baguio-based Team Lakay during his senior year of high school. There, he was groomed to become an excellent athlete and a role model.

Being a member of Team Lakay is something Kingad is extremely proud of.

“Being a member of Team Lakay has played a huge factor in my improvement, not only as an athlete but as a human being as well,” Kingad said. 

“Prior to joining the team, I knew very little about martial arts apart from the basic kicks and punches. Under the guidance of my coach, I learned proper execution as well as other skills such as grappling, submission wrestling, fluid striking, and others. 

“When I was young, I was in a very bad crowd and it had a negative impact on my life. Team Lakay helped me out of that dark place and taught me values like respect and honor, and I generally became a better person.”

Kingad will compete on the same stage with four of his Team Lakay brothers, including Eduard Folayang, Honorio Banario, Geje Eustaquio, and Edward Kelly. 

Training five athletes simultaneously may seem like an overwhelming task for Team Lakay coach Mark Sangiao, but the team’s discipline and teamwork makes his job easier and more efficient. Kingad also does his best to maximize training and finds some advantages in training in a group setting.

“Personally, I think having five of us Team Lakay members competing on the same card is advantageous,” Kingad concluded. 

“Everyone’s always at the gym training and we’re all focused and determined to be in the best condition possible. We know we are all individually responsible for the outcome of our bouts, so we help each other get to where we want to be. 

“At the event, it serves a huge boost to our morale knowing that we have family cheering us on from our corners, no matter the result. I can say our bond at Team Lakay is unbreakable.”

Kingad is on the rise and continues to rack up wins. We can only expect he shines brighter in Manila when he performs alongside his Team Lakay brothers in front of his countrymen. If he’s able to defeat McLaren, Kingad will move on to the final round of the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix, where he will face the winner between Demetrious Johnson and Tatsumitsu Wada.

Adopt-A-City Campaign Raises Urgency of PH Disaster Resilience Efforts

Climate change has left the planet vulnerable to the harmful effects of natural calamities. The Philippines is ranked 2nd among the countries that will be most affected by climate change by 2020 (tied with Bangladesh).  Now more than ever, disaster resilience is of the utmost importance to the country.

This was the pronouncement made by National Resilience Council (NRC) president Antonia Yulo Loyzaga during the recent launch of the NRC’s Adopt-A-City campaign. The program is an innovative city-specific partnership model that will link the resources of private sector companies with the Local Government Units (LGUs), academic partners and the communities themselves in transforming their climate and disaster risk landscapes and establishing their resilient LGU systems.

Loyzaga, together with Cagayan de Oro (CDO) City mayor Oscar Moreno, and SM Prime Holdings Inc. chairman of the executive committee Hans Sy, signed a memorandum of understanding to seal the partnership for SM Prime Holdings to become the first private organization to take part in the campaign. 

“Disaster resiliency is not the job of the government alone. It is a job that can be successful on collaboration with the government. The government sector alone can succeed only if both the private sector and the government will work together,” said SM Prime chairman of the executive committee Hans Sy.

“CDO was a victim of a typhoon that had debunked the long-held theory that Mindanao is typhoon free. We had thousands of casualties, not including those that are missing, so this program indeed is very important,” said CDO mayor Oscar Moreno.

“The Adopt-A-City campaign is most timely because it focuses our efforts on precisely the drivers of our national economy, which are located in your cities. Cities are also among the chief generators of emissions because, in fact, the industry that is driving the metabolism of cities is what actually feeds the greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere,” said NRC president Yulo Loyzaga.

In addition to Cagayan de Oro City, SM has pledged to support the cities of Naga (Bicol) and Iriga, investing in the reduction of these cities’ old and new disaster risks and helping them immediately recover after possible disasters or unforeseen events.

SM has also been involved in other sustainability projects such as recycling their water and installing catchment basins in their malls to avoid flooding.
