Solane employees in Cebu prepared and distributed meal packs, grocery items, and other essentials to police officers, security guards, food vendors, barangay officials, and other frontliners in Mandaue City, Liloan, and Consolacion, Cebu.

Solane’s Kitchen Heroes Cook Food for the Frontliners

Even after the cooking competition is long over, Solane Kitchen Hero Chef’s Edition 2019 winners and ambassador continue the battle, but this time, to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. SKH winner’s chef Roseller “Soy” Fiel and chef Coke Semblante, along with SKH ambassador chef Sau Del Rosario spearheaded food drives for the frontliners, with the support of Solane, the country’s leading LPG solutions provider.

Solane Kitchen Hero Chef’s Edition is a cooking competition held last May to September 2019 to showcase talented Filipino professional chefs hailing from different regions.

Chef Soy from Lanao Del Norte has initiated a food provision distribution for frontliners in his province, including those assigned at the Kapatagan Provincial Hospital and Kapatagan Isolation Facility for the persons under investigation, PNP, BFP and other personnel at the Quarantine Control Points in the Municipality of Lala, Salvado, and Kapatagan.

Meanwhile, in Cebu, Chef Coke partnered with Cocina Collective to provide nutritional snacks for frontliners. Together, they produce and distribute 350 to 700 burgers daily. “We have reached out to frontliners in a total of seven hospitals -- both private and public -- as well as in four barangays, Cebu City police offices, and to checkpoint and public sanitation personnel. We aim to do more until this crisis is controlled.”

SKH ambassador Chef Sau from Pampanga has been working, preparing meal packs twice a week for delivery to different hospitals in the province. He called on his colleagues and friends to join his cause, and they are able to procure 500 healthy meal packs per delivery run. “Those working in the hospitals are working 12 to 16 hours a day. And we’re here to cheer them on and nourish them,” he said.

Supporting them in their daily cooking battle against COVID-19 is Solane, which provides the cooking fuel for free. “As these frontliners are working hard to make sure we are safe and healthy, Solane is here to help make sure they are taken care of,” says Solane CEO Ruben Domingo.

Solane Donates Trash Cans to Rosario LGU

As part of Solane LPG’s commitment to supporting communities, its containers which were initially used for replacement of vapor cargo line were converted to trash cans and duly donated to the Rosario local government unit, along with used paint cans. A total of 30 fuel drums and 20 paint cans have been redesigned into trash receptacles that will benefit the people of Rosario. Solane Villanueva Plant Joins Rescue MARCH Challenge

Isla LPG Villanueva Plant recently participated in the RESCUE MARCH (Mass Assembly for Rescue &Care for Humanity) CHALLENGE that was spearheaded by STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI), an independent power producer operating in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

The Rescue MARCH Challenge is an activity that aims to simulate an anticipated big earthquake and how rescuers would respond to such emergency. Presuming that roads and transportation would be unavailable for use, rescuers would have to withstand going on foot across the city to search for survivors. They must also be able to properly run life-saving emergency procedures.

The program was also organized to show appreciation to the various rescue and emergency first responders around the municipalities of Tagaloan and Villanueva such as the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, and Philippine Red Cross, to name a few. The sole private company invited was Isla LPG Villanueva Plant, assisted by Shell Bitumen.

In total distance, the responders traveled 6.3 kilometers on foot, in their respective rescue uniforms with PPEs (personal protective equipment).

“This march was an endurance test for the responders; with direct sunlight and heat combined with the full PPE covering and exhaustion, it was indeed a challenge—which the responders handled well,” said Mr.Clark Publico, ILC Villanueva Plant operations executive.

The march lasted for an hour. In comparison to actual emergency response, this has proven that the ILC Emergency Response Team is truly capable and prepared in the event of disasters.

How to Teach Children About Fire Safety

People take every precaution necessary to ensure that their households are protected from every possible danger, most especially a fire. But how do parents teach children at an early age the importance of fire safety?

Top LPG provider Solane offers these tips on how to teach kids fire safety.

Flammable materials are not toys. A good way to keep children from accidentally starting a fire is not to let them play with objects that may cause a spark. Make sure all lighters and matches are out of their reach. More importantly, make them understand that even if these items are within reach, they are not toys and they should not play with them.

Have your own fire drills and prepare emergency plans. Make sure your kids know where the fire exits, extinguishers and alarms are. Teach your children what to do when a fire breaks out.  Map a escape route, mark all possible exits for every room in the house and make sure the children have them memorized. In case of a fire, identify a meeting point outside your home. Tell the children to remain in that place once they are out of danger so you would know where everybody is and would not have to worry about someone being left behind.

Stop, drop and roll. Remind children not to panic and run when their clothes catch fire to prevent the flames from spreading. Show them how to stop, drop and roll to extinguish the flames.

Know the emergency numbers. Teach your kids how to dial the numbers for emergency services and to call for help in case of an emergency. Keep those numbers close to the telephone for easy access. Teach the kids to speak in a calm, clear voice to avoid confusion.

Keep fire hazards away from children. Kids are naturally curious and will want to explore whatever they find interesting. Advise them to avoid playing with anything electrical, such as sockets and wires.

How to Keep your Home Appliances Clean

Cleanliness is vital to our lives and well-being. Since we spend most of our time at home, it’s important to keep our appliances clean and in tip-top shape. Keeping appliances clean also offers several advantages, such as higher efficiency, lower utility bills, and greater durability. In addition, an overall fresh atmosphere in the house will be beneficial to everyone in it!

Here are some tips from leading LPG provider Solane on how to maintain and clean your home appliances:

Refrigerator. When was the last time you cleaned your fridge? If you rarely check it, your fridge may be the dirtiest appliance in your home right now. Get started by removing everything in the refrigerator to wipe down the inside easily. It’s also helpful to check for expired food periodically. Scrub the shelves clean with a mixture of baking soda and warm water. Don’t forget to sweep the dust under the fridge. The steam will break down the dirt, making it easier for you to wipe the gunk inside.

Washing Machine. Constant contact with dirty clothes and water can make the washing machine a breeding ground for germs and other harmful organisms. To keep the washing machine in the best condition, be sure to wash your clothes with warm water every now and then to get rid of the dirt. Run an empty load with hot water and a cup of distilled vinegar to sanitize the basin and remove any lingering grime.

Stove Burners. Try different tactics for gas and electric burners. For gas burners, unclog the port with an unfolded paper clip or a pin, take out the removable parts, and soak in hot, soapy water. Then wipe the top with a damp cloth to prevent water from leaking into the burner. Electric burners, on the other hand, can never be submerged in water, making it harder to break down burnt spills, especially if the soap you’re using isn’t potent enough. Mix baking soda and water and stir until you get a pasty texture, then use it to scrub the mess away.

LPG Tanks. As essential appliances in the kitchen, LPG tanks are usually stored in places where dirt can easily accumulate. It’s vital to ensure that the tanks are clean and well-cared for. Clean the tank’s valve outlets using plastic plugs and make sure that no dirt, grime, or insects get inside the valve outlet. Check for leaks from time to time by rubbing soapy water on the cylinder. If a soap bubble appears, there may be a leak. Be on the lookout for even the tiniest leak.

It’s all in the family

They say running a business with family members can be tricky – not only does it blur the line between what’s personal and professional, but it also has the potential to bring out the worst in you and your relatives.

For the owners of Fabson Inc., a family-owned corporation that distributes Solane LPG in Iloilo City, working with close relatives has brought out the best in each of them. Eric Santos, head of marketing – and son of the owners – shared: “It’s a family-owned company but we strive to be professionals. And it comes naturally since we grew up working together. It’s an environment that we are used to.”

Looking at the company’s consistent growth in the past 48 years, it really looks like working with family is something that Fabson employees thrive in. Pioneered by Eric’s aunt as a single proprietorship in April 1968, it was then handed over to their mother, Loreta Santos, who managed to keep the company afloat with her prowess for finance and treasury. However, despite enjoying many years of success as a single proprietorship, they thought it could benefit more if it was turned into a corporation.

Spearheaded by their father, Winston Santos, who is also a former Shell executive, Fabson officially became a corporation in 1994, bringing with it the core value of Shellane (now Solane): “We care.” Under the management of Winston, the company became a more organized entity with different departments in place.  

“Before my dad took over the business, it was like a mom and pop store. There were no retail outlets and there was no formal organizational structure. It was ran sari-sari store style, and we couldn’t grow as much,” said Eric, who also works with his sister, Pien, the COO.

According to Eric, his dad applied everything he learned from Shell, one of the top petroleum companies. He deployed retail sales executives and commercial sales executives to cover designated areas. “From handling a network of ten retail outlets, it grew to 20, and now we have around 600 outlets covering the whole area of our network,” he said.

In addition to Winston re-engineering the company, each member of the family was encouraged to be very hands-on with the business – from knowing the products by heart to studying routes of their delivery trucks.

Their immersion in the business is part of the reason why the familial relationship extends to their employees. With the “we care” core value, employee retention grew, and each staff members treated as an extension of their family.

Eric adds that every employee is trained to provide topnotch service to customers, including the 7-point safety check, Hatid Bahay, and 24-hour service. He notes that these after-sales initiatives are factors that help minimize the number of consumers who would buy at independently refilled outlets as they realize that the quality of genuine Solane products and the service they get makes it more cost-efficient in the long run.

Without a doubt, these business practices have made it possible for Fabson to become the longest running Solane distributor in Iloilo. Adds Eric: “This kind of business is something you have to immerse in because if you just leave it there, it can grow but you will not appreciate it as much. You have to sacrifice a lot, and you have to know your products very well.”

Solane marks fifth anniversary

This was the celebratory pronouncement of Ricky Delgado, Jr., chairman of the executive committee, as he summed up the last five years of ISLA LPG Inc. “Solane has only been running for five years but we’ve already done so much. A celebration of success by Solane

Ricky Sta. Ana, one of ISLA Petroleum & Gas Corporation’s (IPG) business partners, took home his second championship title at the 3rd Solane LPG Golf Tournament. Sta. Ana scored a total of 89 gross score to win the golf cup.

Organized by the Isla LPG Corporation (ILC), the leading LPG solutions company behind the brand Solane, the exclusive sporting tournament is an annual event showcasing the company’s customer appreciation and commitment to nurture camaraderie and long-term relationships.

This year’s golf tournament was held at the Alabang Country Club with a total of 40 attendees from some of the biggest companies in the country participating.

Included in the play-offs were the management team of IPG, led by the chairman of the executive committee Ricky Delgado Jr., CEO of Isla Petroleum and Gas Corp. (IPG) Shoichi Watanabe, CEO of Isla LPG Corp. (ILC) Ruben Domingo, and ILC general manager for sales Tonito Gonzalez. 

Other top scorers in the 3rd Solane Golf Tournament were Tomas Rocamora who won 3rd place, Leo Obias in 2nd place, and Ronaldo Nava in 1st place. Ricky Delgado from the staff division retained the championship crown.

Special awards were also given to Augusto Gabriel for the Longest Drive, Ed Collantes for the Most Accurate Drive while Best Flight awards were given to Obias, Delgado, Edgar Aglipay, and Adam Laker.
