Arjan Bhullar Finishes Brandon Vera By TKO To Become ONE Heavyweight World Champion

15 May 2021 – Singapore: ONE Championship™ (ONE), Asia's largest global sports media property, returned Saturday with ONE: DANGAL, a tape-delayed event from the Singapore Indoor Stadium that showcased the very best of India. The event featured the ONE Super Series debut of a Thai striking phenom and four compelling mixed martial arts contests, including a battle for the ONE Heavyweight World Title.

In the main event, Arjan “Singh” Bhullar dethroned longtime heavyweight king Brandon “The Truth” Vera to capture the ONE Heavyweight World Title and become the first Indian Mixed Martial Arts World Champion in history.

Bhullar cautiously approached Vera in the first round, looking to string together combinations to set up a takedown. The Indian star stifled Vera with feints and strikes, freezing the Filipino-American on his feet and making him hesitant to engage. Bhullar took Vera down toward the end of the opening frame and controlled him on the mat.

In the second round, Bhullar capitalized on his feints by catching “The Truth” with an overhand right that sent him reeling toward the Circle Wall. A few more right hands compounded the damage, and a debilitating body shot had Vera gasping for air. Once “Singh” was able to close the distance and latch onto the defending World Champion with a body lock, it signalled the beginning of the end. Bhullar brought Vera to the mat and pounded him out for the technical knockout victory.

Muay Thai phenom Tawanchai PK.Saenchai Muaythaigym made his promotional debut in the co-main event and dominated former WBC Muay Thai World Champion Sean “Clubber” Clancy to win by knockout in round three.

Operating behind a furious offensive, Tawanchai attacked with force, showcasing leaping elbows, laser-like punching accuracy, and his signature left kick. A left hand dropped Clancy in the first round, but the Irishman was able to recover. In the third and final frame, a solid left roundhouse kick to the jaw ended the fight abruptly.

In a women’s atomweight contest, perennial contender Bi “Killer Bee” Nguyen took home a hard-earned victory over Indian wrestling superstar Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phogat, winning by razor-thin split decision after three close rounds.

Fourth-ranked women’s strawweight contender Ayaka Miura made quick work of Rayane Bastos, submitting the Brazilian in the first round of a catchweight contest. Additionally, Indian veteran Gurdarshan “Saint Lion” Mangat overcame a spirited effort from rising star and compatriot Roshan Mainam to win by unanimous decision.

Brandon Vera Shares Enlightening Experience on ‘The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition’

Reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera is among a handful of martial arts superstars to guest on upcoming reality television show, “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition.”

The 43-year-old Filipino-American mixed martial arts veteran joined legendary fighters Georges St-Pierre, Renzo Gracie, and former ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben Askren, as well as high-profile CEOs from some of the world’s largest companies.

Vera, who is currently in Florida training alongside fellow athletes Aung La N Sang and Martin Nguyen at Sanford MMA, recalled his experience on ONE Championship’s version of the iconic TV franchise.

“It was very educational and refreshing not to have any pressure on me in front of the camera. I got to learn a lot from the candidates. I look forward to seeing ‘The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition,’” said Vera.

“It was an honor, an absolute privilege to be standing next to greatness both in the martial arts and business worlds.”

The show, based on the popular non-scripted television franchise, is a complete departure from the classic American version, and offers viewers an entirely new experience.

“The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” invites 16 candidates hand-picked from around the world to participate in a series of business and physical challenges, as they compete for a US $250,000 job offer to work directly for ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong as his protege.

Vera, who was front and center to witness the candidates scrap and battle to reach the finale and ultimately win the competition, says viewers will be in awe of just how tough this version of “The Apprentice” truly was.

“I think the physical challenges for the candidates were something very unexpected. They were definitely not prepared even though they thought they were. It was very cool seeing some of them push beyond their limits, while some just fell apart,” said Vera.

Apart from being one of the most dominant world champions in ONE Championship, Vera is also an entrepreneur himself, owning several businesses including the Asian branch of renowned gym Alliance MMA. He, in particular, learned a lot from his time on “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition.”

Vera described his experience working with guest CEOs such as Zoom’s Eric Yuan, Grab’s Anthony Tan, and Catcha Group’s Patrick Grove, among others.

“It was a combination of being nervous, because I didn’t want to miss anything, and being nervous to discover some of my thought processes to be incorrect. It was definitely a learning curve all the time, and I’m very blessed to have this opportunity over and over with ONE Championship,” said Vera.

“The Apprentice” is one of the biggest non-scripted reality television programs in history, judging the business skills of candidates who are competing for a job offer under a high-profile CEO. It has aired in more than 120 countries.

The first season of “The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition” consists of 13 episodes. It’s scheduled to premiere across Asia on Thursday, 18 March, on AXN, the show’s official Asian broadcast partner, followed by a global launch in June across broadcast and streaming platforms.

Having been witness to the candidates’ struggles, Vera learned exactly what it takes to be a contestant on the show, and has some advice for those wanting to join the show if it’s ordered for future seasons.

“[You need to be] someone who won’t break. Someone who knows how to take lead and set the example by doing. Someone who lives up to all of the values that ONE Championship stands for. That is what it will take to win ‘The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition,’” said Vera.

Vera is slated to make his return to the ONE Circle later this year to defend his ONE Heavyweight World Title, with a potential opponent being UFC veteran Arjan “Singh” Bhullar, although details of the bout have yet to be finalized or announced.

Brandon Vera Back in Philippines, Has Close Eye on Potential Heavyweight Contenders

Reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera recently flew from his home in Guam back to the Philippines to wrap up a few commercial obligations, visit family, and just simply check out what he missed.

Vera and wife Jessica welcomed their first child together, Atreyu Timothy Craven Vera, last year in the US territory, and have remained there to ride out the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the first time Vera has returned to the Philippines since.

“We’re back here in the Philippines to come home for a second, finish filming our movie we started about a virus, before the real virus, and a couple of endorsement commercials,” said Vera.

One thing Vera will be doing this week is keeping a close eye on a couple of particular heavyweight matchups at ONE: UNBREAKABLE II.

ONE: UNBREAKABLE II, a previously recorded event from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore, scheduled for global broadcast this Friday, 29 January features former ONE Heavyweight World Title challenger Mauro "The Hammer" Cerilli of Italy who takes on Russia's Abdulbasir "Dagestan Machine" Vagabov.

Also scheduled for action is four-time Muay Thai and Kickboxing Heavyweight World Champion Alain "The Panther" Ngalani of Hong Kong, who will face Senegalese sensation "Reug Reug" Oumar Kane.

The four men are highly regarded heavyweights, and are all trying to fight their way into a shot at Vera’s ONE Heavyweight World Title.

The 43-year-old Filipino-American combat sports veteran has held the title since winning the inaugural belt in 2015, and reiterates that he’s more than willing to put it on the line against a worthy challenger.

“These guys are amazing heavyweights, each with their own attributes to solve and figure out. I’m excited to see this event, and even more excited to watch and learn. I’m beyond hyped for all the recent signings of world-class heavyweight talent. It makes me nervous, which in turn, makes me train even harder,” said Vera.

“All of them are future opponents. Everyone is when you’re the champ.”

In a recent Global Conference Call with ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong, ONE Championship announced its latest renewed partnership with Turner Sports in the United States. On the call, Sityodtong fielded questions from media from all over the world, who asked about a wide range of topics, including the status of the heavyweight division and when Vera can expect to be back in action.

The promotion stated that logistics and contracts were still being figured out, but that fans would not have to wait long to see “The Truth” return to the Circle.

Currently, Vera is expected to face rising star Arjan “Singh” Bhullar of India in his next world title defense, although nothing has been finalized yet and a date has yet to be confirmed. Vera did, however, teased his impending return.

“I would say abangan ‘nyo (wait for it) for the first half of the year,” Vera said.

KIAMRIAN ABBASOV DOMINATES ZEBAZTIAN KADESTAM TO CAPTURE ONE WELTERWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Kadestam started off strong in the early going, connecting on heavy leg kicks and slicing downward elbows. Abbasov, however, would keep the gap close and was constantly pursuing the takedown. On the mat, Abbasov shined as he punished Kadestam with ground-and-pound. Abbasov was able to sustain this pace for the duration of the bout, as Kadestam had no answer for Brazen’s grappling prowess. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Abbasov to win by unanimous decision, crowning him the new king at welterweight. In the co main event, reigning ONE Lightweight Kickboxing World Champion Regian “The Immortal” Eersel of The Netherlands retained his title with a unanimous decision victory over countryman Nieky “The Natural” Holzken. A knockdown in the first round gave Eersel a 10-8 edge early, as a furious pace was set by the champion. For five full rounds, Eersel kept up the pressure, keeping a constant barrage of boxing combinations, thudding kicks, and sharp knees. Although Holzken tried his best to match the champion’s activity, he found absolutely no quarter for the entirety of the bout. In the end, all three judges saw victory for Eersel across the board. Local martial arts star Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol of Indonesia overcame a spirited effort from opponent Bozhena “Toto” Antoniyar of Myanmar. It was the Wushu striking of Lumban Gaol versus the rapid punching combinations of Myanmar national boxing champion Antoniyar for three whole rounds. Action went back-and-forth, but it was Lumban Gaol who did better work when the action hit the mat. Lumban Gaol controlled Antoniyar on the ground and did more damage all throughout the contest. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Lumban Gaol to win by unanimous decision. In a ONE Super Series Kickboxing contest, Wang “Golden Boy” Junguang of China obliterated Federico “The Little Big Man” Roma of Argentina, stopping his opponent with one second left to go in the first round. Although Roma was game and up for the challenge, he was clearly overwhelmed by Junguang’s powerful and accurate strikes. Junguang knocked Roma down three times across three minutes of intense action to earn the finish. ONE Championship newcomer John “Hands of Stone” Lineker of Brazil made a successful promotional debut, pulling out a close points victory over opponent Muin “Tajik” Gafurov of Tajikistan. Lineker stayed true to form and was dangerous early with his lightning quick and powerful punches. Gafurov would try his best to defend, and showed incredible heart and chin in doing so. “Tajik” also scored on a handful of takedowns to his credit. But Lineker’s power was too much as he proved to be the stronger of the two athletes. In the end, all three judges awarded the victory to Lineker to win by unanimous decision. New Zealand’s Mark “Tyson” Fairtex Abelardo overwhelmed opponent Ayideng Jumayi of China to win by unanimous decision in a three round bantamweight contest. From the first round to the last, Abelardo proved far too quick and powerful for Jumayi, who was a step behind the entire bout. In the end, Abelardo took home the victory on the strength of his thunderous combinations, earning the judges’ nod on all three scorecards. Indonesian wrestling star Eko Roni Saputra took home a victory after opponent Kaji “Alpha” Ebin of the Philippines was unable to continue due to an injury. Ebin dislocated his shoulder after throwing a wild right hook that missed the mark. The referee stepped in to intervene after determining Ebin could no longer continue. The official finish came at 19 seconds in the first round. In a highly-anticipated all-Indonesian showdown between top talents, Stefer “The Lion” Rahardian earned a much-needed victory after a dominant performance against Adrian “Papua Badboy” Mattheis. Rahardian took Mattheis to the ground at will and kept him subdued for the duration of the three-round contest. Mattheis tried his best to make it a striking affair, but Rahardian was too slick on the mats. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Rahardian to win by unanimous decision. The Netherlands’ Pieter “The Archangel” Buist extended his winning streak to seven bouts with a one-sided drubbing of previously unbeaten Antonio “The Spartan” Caruso of Australia. Buist weathered the early storm from Caruso who came out firing. The longer, taller Buist then came on early in the second round to turn the tide, using his punishing leg kicks, smooth boxing combinations, and sharp knees to wear Caruso down. In the final moments of the bout, it was all Pieter Buist as “The Archangel” ran away with a unanimous decision victory. Indonesia’s Abro “The Black Komodo” Fernandes put forth an impressive grappling showcase, overwhelming compatriot Rudy “The Golden Boy” Agustian to win by unanimous decision after three rounds. Agustian found success on the feet early. But by the middle of the second round, Fernandes began to overpower his opponent and took control of the contest. Agustian could not keep Fernandes off him for the remainder of the bout, as the latter threatened with various submissions and did damage with ground-and-pound. All three judges scored in favor of Fernandes who took home a hard-earned victory. Former Pancrase lightweight champion Kazuki Tokudome of Japan turned in a masterful performance, outgrappling the United States’ Johnny “Johnny Boy” Nunez en route to a three round decision victory. Nunez was aggressive from the start, pushing the pace against Tokudome looking to throw powerful combinations. The Japanese warrior wisely stayed out of range, and instead took Nunez to the mats where Tokudome spent most of his time in dominant position. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Tokudome. Indonesia’s Elipitua Siregar put in another excellent performance, submitting countryman Egi Rozten in the first round of a flyweight contest. Rozten was aggressive early, bringing the action to Siregar, but the latter showed his rapidly-evolving grappling skills. After action hit the mat, Siregar swiftly took his opponent’s back and sunk in a deep rear naked choke to force the tap. In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai flyweight bout, Japan’s Taiki Naito delivered a stunning performance, stopping New Zealand’s Alexi Serepisos within three rounds. It was an action-packed contest, beginning with both athletes putting in some good work from the opening bell. For the duration of the bout it was Naito who proved to be the sharper, more accurate striker. In the third round, Naito connected on a beautiful left hook to put Serepisos down and out. Kicking off the action at ONE: DAWN OF VALOR were Indonesian strawweight standouts Angelo “The Unicorn King” Bimoadji and Adi “Zenwalk” Paryanto. Paryanto immediately went right to work from the get-go, unloading a series of powerful knees to Bimoadji’s midsection. A right knee to the ribs crumpled Bimoadji and the referee called a halt to the contest a little over a minute in the first round. Eduard Folayang: Tsogookhuu Doesn’t Like to Be Pressured

Eduard “Landslide” Folayang is overflowing with confidence ahead of his match on November 8 against Amarsanaa “Spear” Tsogookhuu at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines in the main card of ONE: MASTERS OF FATE.

Folayang took a close look at Amarsanaa’s previous performance at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS where the latter won by unanimous decision. But despite the Mongolian’s commendable display of striking and grappling, the “Landslide” believes there are holes in his opponent’s game that he can capitalize on.

“Amarsanaa Tsogookhuu was able to showcase his skills with Shannon [Wiratchai] in his debut match,” Folayang said.

“He is really good on his feet and his striking can knock me out if it connects, however he has problems when he is put under pressure. There are some things that we saw which we can use to my advantage, I will leave it at that.”

Folayang has more experience than the “Spear” and is considered a veteran in this game. Crafting his fight strategy with his colleagues at the famed Team Lakay, Folayang was able to cover every angle and is now fully-prepared to claim victory.

The Baguio City native is drawing strength and motivation from the people who matter most to him. His determination to dominate his opponent grows stronger every time he thinks about his supporters and his hunger to win.

“In my head, this match will be in my favor in every aspect,” Folayang said.

“That does not mean I am underestimating Amarsanaa, I simply believe that the results of my preparations will allow me to dominate him. I have my team, my friends, my fans, and the rest of the Philippines cheering and depending on me. I will not let them down.”

Folayang will not be the only man representing the prestigious Baguio City gym as former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio will face CWFC Bantamweight World Champion Toni Tauru. In the main event, ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua Pacio will defend his title against multiple-time Wushu World Champion Rene Catalan.

Rene Catalan: Joshua Pacio Is Only Human

Rene “The Challenger” Catalan’s long wait for a shot at the title will come to an end on November 8 as he challenges Joshua “The Passion” Pacio for his ONE Strawweight World Championship.

The veteran Catalan knows that opportunities like this are hard to come by, and he will not let his chance at glory slip at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines, when he takes on Pacio in the main event of ONE: MASTERS OF FATE.

“I’m one hundred percent focused on getting this belt,” Catalan said.

“It’s every fighter’s dream to become a World Champion. I’m hungry and determined to win the title.”

Pacio lost and regained the title in 2019, and before the year ends, he will put it on the line one more time. 

For “The Passion”, it’s a chance to further legitimize his claim to the strawweight throne. For Catalan, it presents an opportunity to realize a lifelong dream. The 40-year-old Filipino knows Pacio is beatable, and it all depends on how he executes on fight night.

“Joshua Pacio is only human,” Catalan said.

“Just like every other fighter, he has his strengths and weaknesses. We’re going to try and deal with that in the fight. It all comes down to the game plan we have heading into this. It’s going to be an exciting contest.”

No matter the opponent, there is one thing Catalan will always be proud of and that’s representing his home country on the global stage of competition. He did so in Wushu as an amateur, and continues to do so even now as a professional.

For Catalan, fighting for the Philippines invokes in him a sense of pride and honor.

“I love my country and it is always an honor to represent the Philippines,” Catalan said.

“I’ve worn the flag for most of my athletic career, and I have always considered it a privilege. Through competing, I aim to show everyone the principles of martial arts. I am not just fighting for my team, but also for the glory of my almighty God.”

With both Catalan and Pacio being Wushu striking specialists, the elder athlete believes that this encounter will be brief. However, as a fighter with veteran experience, Catalan knows he must prepare for all scenarios, and be ready for wherever the action takes him.

No one can predict exactly when and how the bout will end, but Catalan says fans should expect an action-packed showdown between two top strawweights.

“Given our styles, it’s not hard to predict this fight will end within the distance,” Catalan concluded.
