Reinier De Ridder Crowned New ONE Middleweight World Champion with Rear-Naked Choke Over Aung La N Sang

30 October 2020 – Singapore: The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), held it’s biggest event of the year. ONE: INSIDE THE MATRIX featured four exciting World Championship contests, broadcast live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, 30 October.

In the main event, The Netherlands’ Reinier “The Dutch Knight” De Ridder shocked the world, submitting now former titleholder “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang of Myanmar in the first round. Aung La opened up the action with a fast uppercut that just missed the mark. De Ridder countered with a quick shot from range, taking “The Burmese Python” down to the mat. A swift transition to the back secured with a body triangle offered De Ridder plenty of opportunities to work for the finish with most of the round to go. After several attempts, a rear-naked choke was in deep, and Aung La had no choice but to tap out.

In the end, De Ridder stayed true to his word, choking out Aung La early to capture the ONE World Title. With the victory, De Ridder kept his unblemished record, taking home the ONE Middleweight World Title in the process.

Reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee of Singapore made quick work of the previously-unbeaten Iuri Lapicus of Moldova, winning via first round technical knockout. At the sound of the opening bell, Lee dashed across the Circle, shooting in for a double leg. Lapicus was able to reverse the takedown and land in top position. Lee worked to make his way back up to the feet, taking down Lapicus himself and landing in full mount. Lapicus tried to scramble, but Lee showed immense control on the mat. From there, “The Warrior” connected on a series of hammer fist blows that rendered Lapicus defenseless. The referee had no choice but to step in and call a halt to the contest.

Vietnamese-American knockout artist Thanh Le authored a scintillating knockout of now former titleholder Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen of Australia and Vietnam, capturing the ONE Featherweight World Championship. Le employed a smart game plan, circling Nguyen with constant movement while unloading thudding high kicks and thunderous left hooks. Nguyen stalked Le patiently, attempting to cut off the Circle to land his vaunted overhand right. In the third round, Nguyen turned up the pressure, at the same time exposing himself to Le’s fast and furious strikes. Not long after, Le connected on a short hook on the inside that staggered “The Situ-Asian,” sending him reeling towards the fence. A series of left and right hand bombs ended the bout abruptly, and Le walked away with the most significant finish of his career.

China’s “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan retained her ONE Women’s Strawweight World Championship, turning in a virtuoso performance against Singapore’s Tiffany “No Chill” Teo, winning by close unanimous decision in a highly-anticipated rematch. Xiong peppered Teo with beautiful boxing combinations from start to end, proving the faster, more powerful puncher. Teo had her moments, scoring on a few takedowns, and connecting on a series of sharp knees and roundhouse kicks. But Xiong was far too forceful on the feet, and Teo just could not overcome the pressure. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Xiong Jing Nan.

Australia’s Antonio “The Spartan” Caruso notched the biggest victory of his career so far, as he took home a hard-earned unanimous decision victory over former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang of the Philippines. Caruso started off the bout strong, sticking multiple takedowns and attacking with various submission attempts in the first two rounds. Folayang, however, came alive in the third behind a steady leg kick game that had Caruso immobilized. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Caruso.

Kicking off the action at ONE: INSIDE THE MATRIX, Indian wrestling champion Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phogat put together an impressive victory over Cambodia’s Nou Srey Pov, winning by technical knockout in the second round. Phogat dominated the first round, landing multiple takedowns while doing damage on the ground in dominant position. Phogat landed a pair of solid right hands before taking Nou down to the ground again in the second, where she finished in top position with strikes.

ONE Championship returns with ONE: INSIDE THE MATRIX II, a previously-recorded event for global broadcast on Friday, 6 November. In the main event, reigning ONE Welterweight World Champion Kiamrian “Brazen” Abbasov of Kyrgyzstan defends his world title against undefeated James Nakashima of the United States. Kadestam started off strong in the early going, connecting on heavy leg kicks and slicing downward elbows. Abbasov, however, would keep the gap close and was constantly pursuing the takedown. On the mat, Abbasov shined as he punished Kadestam with ground-and-pound. Abbasov was able to sustain this pace for the duration of the bout, as Kadestam had no answer for Brazen’s grappling prowess. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Abbasov to win by unanimous decision, crowning him the new king at welterweight. In the co main event, reigning ONE Lightweight Kickboxing World Champion Regian “The Immortal” Eersel of The Netherlands retained his title with a unanimous decision victory over countryman Nieky “The Natural” Holzken. A knockdown in the first round gave Eersel a 10-8 edge early, as a furious pace was set by the champion. For five full rounds, Eersel kept up the pressure, keeping a constant barrage of boxing combinations, thudding kicks, and sharp knees. Although Holzken tried his best to match the champion’s activity, he found absolutely no quarter for the entirety of the bout. In the end, all three judges saw victory for Eersel across the board. Local martial arts star Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol of Indonesia overcame a spirited effort from opponent Bozhena “Toto” Antoniyar of Myanmar. It was the Wushu striking of Lumban Gaol versus the rapid punching combinations of Myanmar national boxing champion Antoniyar for three whole rounds. Action went back-and-forth, but it was Lumban Gaol who did better work when the action hit the mat. Lumban Gaol controlled Antoniyar on the ground and did more damage all throughout the contest. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Lumban Gaol to win by unanimous decision. In a ONE Super Series Kickboxing contest, Wang “Golden Boy” Junguang of China obliterated Federico “The Little Big Man” Roma of Argentina, stopping his opponent with one second left to go in the first round. Although Roma was game and up for the challenge, he was clearly overwhelmed by Junguang’s powerful and accurate strikes. Junguang knocked Roma down three times across three minutes of intense action to earn the finish. ONE Championship newcomer John “Hands of Stone” Lineker of Brazil made a successful promotional debut, pulling out a close points victory over opponent Muin “Tajik” Gafurov of Tajikistan. Lineker stayed true to form and was dangerous early with his lightning quick and powerful punches. Gafurov would try his best to defend, and showed incredible heart and chin in doing so. “Tajik” also scored on a handful of takedowns to his credit. But Lineker’s power was too much as he proved to be the stronger of the two athletes. In the end, all three judges awarded the victory to Lineker to win by unanimous decision. New Zealand’s Mark “Tyson” Fairtex Abelardo overwhelmed opponent Ayideng Jumayi of China to win by unanimous decision in a three round bantamweight contest. From the first round to the last, Abelardo proved far too quick and powerful for Jumayi, who was a step behind the entire bout. In the end, Abelardo took home the victory on the strength of his thunderous combinations, earning the judges’ nod on all three scorecards. Indonesian wrestling star Eko Roni Saputra took home a victory after opponent Kaji “Alpha” Ebin of the Philippines was unable to continue due to an injury. Ebin dislocated his shoulder after throwing a wild right hook that missed the mark. The referee stepped in to intervene after determining Ebin could no longer continue. The official finish came at 19 seconds in the first round. In a highly-anticipated all-Indonesian showdown between top talents, Stefer “The Lion” Rahardian earned a much-needed victory after a dominant performance against Adrian “Papua Badboy” Mattheis. Rahardian took Mattheis to the ground at will and kept him subdued for the duration of the three-round contest. Mattheis tried his best to make it a striking affair, but Rahardian was too slick on the mats. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Rahardian to win by unanimous decision. The Netherlands’ Pieter “The Archangel” Buist extended his winning streak to seven bouts with a one-sided drubbing of previously unbeaten Antonio “The Spartan” Caruso of Australia. Buist weathered the early storm from Caruso who came out firing. The longer, taller Buist then came on early in the second round to turn the tide, using his punishing leg kicks, smooth boxing combinations, and sharp knees to wear Caruso down. In the final moments of the bout, it was all Pieter Buist as “The Archangel” ran away with a unanimous decision victory. Indonesia’s Abro “The Black Komodo” Fernandes put forth an impressive grappling showcase, overwhelming compatriot Rudy “The Golden Boy” Agustian to win by unanimous decision after three rounds. Agustian found success on the feet early. But by the middle of the second round, Fernandes began to overpower his opponent and took control of the contest. Agustian could not keep Fernandes off him for the remainder of the bout, as the latter threatened with various submissions and did damage with ground-and-pound. All three judges scored in favor of Fernandes who took home a hard-earned victory. Former Pancrase lightweight champion Kazuki Tokudome of Japan turned in a masterful performance, outgrappling the United States’ Johnny “Johnny Boy” Nunez en route to a three round decision victory. Nunez was aggressive from the start, pushing the pace against Tokudome looking to throw powerful combinations. The Japanese warrior wisely stayed out of range, and instead took Nunez to the mats where Tokudome spent most of his time in dominant position. In the end, all three judges scored the bout in favor of Tokudome. Indonesia’s Elipitua Siregar put in another excellent performance, submitting countryman Egi Rozten in the first round of a flyweight contest. Rozten was aggressive early, bringing the action to Siregar, but the latter showed his rapidly-evolving grappling skills. After action hit the mat, Siregar swiftly took his opponent’s back and sunk in a deep rear naked choke to force the tap. In a ONE Super Series Muay Thai flyweight bout, Japan’s Taiki Naito delivered a stunning performance, stopping New Zealand’s Alexi Serepisos within three rounds. It was an action-packed contest, beginning with both athletes putting in some good work from the opening bell. For the duration of the bout it was Naito who proved to be the sharper, more accurate striker. In the third round, Naito connected on a beautiful left hook to put Serepisos down and out. Kicking off the action at ONE: DAWN OF VALOR were Indonesian strawweight standouts Angelo “The Unicorn King” Bimoadji and Adi “Zenwalk” Paryanto. Paryanto immediately went right to work from the get-go, unloading a series of powerful knees to Bimoadji’s midsection. A right knee to the ribs crumpled Bimoadji and the referee called a halt to the contest a little over a minute in the first round. Eduard Folayang: Tsogookhuu Doesn’t Like to Be Pressured

Eduard “Landslide” Folayang is overflowing with confidence ahead of his match on November 8 against Amarsanaa “Spear” Tsogookhuu at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines in the main card of ONE: MASTERS OF FATE.

Folayang took a close look at Amarsanaa’s previous performance at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS where the latter won by unanimous decision. But despite the Mongolian’s commendable display of striking and grappling, the “Landslide” believes there are holes in his opponent’s game that he can capitalize on.

“Amarsanaa Tsogookhuu was able to showcase his skills with Shannon [Wiratchai] in his debut match,” Folayang said.

“He is really good on his feet and his striking can knock me out if it connects, however he has problems when he is put under pressure. There are some things that we saw which we can use to my advantage, I will leave it at that.”

Folayang has more experience than the “Spear” and is considered a veteran in this game. Crafting his fight strategy with his colleagues at the famed Team Lakay, Folayang was able to cover every angle and is now fully-prepared to claim victory.

The Baguio City native is drawing strength and motivation from the people who matter most to him. His determination to dominate his opponent grows stronger every time he thinks about his supporters and his hunger to win.

“In my head, this match will be in my favor in every aspect,” Folayang said.

“That does not mean I am underestimating Amarsanaa, I simply believe that the results of my preparations will allow me to dominate him. I have my team, my friends, my fans, and the rest of the Philippines cheering and depending on me. I will not let them down.”

Folayang will not be the only man representing the prestigious Baguio City gym as former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio will face CWFC Bantamweight World Champion Toni Tauru. In the main event, ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua Pacio will defend his title against multiple-time Wushu World Champion Rene Catalan.

Rene Catalan: Joshua Pacio Is Only Human

Rene “The Challenger” Catalan’s long wait for a shot at the title will come to an end on November 8 as he challenges Joshua “The Passion” Pacio for his ONE Strawweight World Championship.

The veteran Catalan knows that opportunities like this are hard to come by, and he will not let his chance at glory slip at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines, when he takes on Pacio in the main event of ONE: MASTERS OF FATE.

“I’m one hundred percent focused on getting this belt,” Catalan said.

“It’s every fighter’s dream to become a World Champion. I’m hungry and determined to win the title.”

Pacio lost and regained the title in 2019, and before the year ends, he will put it on the line one more time. 

For “The Passion”, it’s a chance to further legitimize his claim to the strawweight throne. For Catalan, it presents an opportunity to realize a lifelong dream. The 40-year-old Filipino knows Pacio is beatable, and it all depends on how he executes on fight night.

“Joshua Pacio is only human,” Catalan said.

“Just like every other fighter, he has his strengths and weaknesses. We’re going to try and deal with that in the fight. It all comes down to the game plan we have heading into this. It’s going to be an exciting contest.”

No matter the opponent, there is one thing Catalan will always be proud of and that’s representing his home country on the global stage of competition. He did so in Wushu as an amateur, and continues to do so even now as a professional.

For Catalan, fighting for the Philippines invokes in him a sense of pride and honor.

“I love my country and it is always an honor to represent the Philippines,” Catalan said.

“I’ve worn the flag for most of my athletic career, and I have always considered it a privilege. Through competing, I aim to show everyone the principles of martial arts. I am not just fighting for my team, but also for the glory of my almighty God.”

With both Catalan and Pacio being Wushu striking specialists, the elder athlete believes that this encounter will be brief. However, as a fighter with veteran experience, Catalan knows he must prepare for all scenarios, and be ready for wherever the action takes him.

No one can predict exactly when and how the bout will end, but Catalan says fans should expect an action-packed showdown between two top strawweights.

“Given our styles, it’s not hard to predict this fight will end within the distance,” Catalan concluded.

“But I’m training and preparing to go all five rounds to win a decision if necessary. As a fighter, you have to be prepared for all scenarios.”

Aung La set the tempo in the first round, peppering Vera with leg kicks in an attempt to slow down the taller man. Against the fence, Vera would connect on a series of punches and elbows, which Aung La wore well. The second frame opened up with more action on the inside, as both men connected on huge combinations from close range. Vera and Aung La took each other’s best shots. A furious exchange of thunderous strikes against the fence ensued. Aung La landed a sharp spinning back elbow to rock Vera, sending the Filipino-American to the canvas. Aung La put on the finishing touches with ground-and-pound while Vera covered up. Japanese legend and former ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki made quick work of former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario of the Philippines, winning by first-round submission in less than a minute. Banario tried his best to keep distance, but Aoki closed the gap almost immediately and fished for the bodylock takedown. Once they hit the mat, Aoki saw the opening and instantly latched onto a D’Arce choke to seal the deal and force the tap in just 54 seconds. Reigning ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon of Thailand outlasted game opponent Walter Goncalves of Brazil in a gruelling five-round contest. The first round saw both competitors moving forward with their most powerful combinations, neither man taking a step back. Action continued the same way in the second and third rounds, with the champion Rodtang pushing the pace as Goncalves countered off his back foot. The penultimate round was close, with Rodtang swinging wild haymakers from the center of the ONE Circle. Goncalves, however, showcased impressive head movement and evasion, slipping most of the champion’s power shots. In the final round, Rodtang continued to stalk Goncalves across the canvas, but the Brazilian was unwilling to engage. In the end, Rodtang walked away with a split decision victory to retain his title. Italian-Armenian kickboxing legend Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan punched and kicked his way to the ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship and a cool USD 1 million grand prize after edging out France’s Samy “AK47” Sana by unanimous decision. Petrosyan navigated Sana’s height and reach advantage to connect on crisp punch combinations throughout the three-round affair. In the end, Petrosyan put through a dominant performance to earn the nod on the judges’ scorecards and the biggest win in his ONE career. Indian heavyweight Arjan “Singh” Bhullar opened his ONE Championship career on a high note with a hard-fought unanimous decision win over former ONE World Title Challenger Mauro “The Hammer” Cerilli of Italy. A wrestler by discipline, Bhullar showed off a different facet of his game, picking apart Cerilli with pinpoint strikes while avoiding damage with impeccable head movement. Bhullar was one step ahead for all three rounds as he announced his arrival to the ONE heavyweight division with a convincing debut win. Japan’s Mei “V.V.” Yamaguchi strengthened her case as a top contender in the women’s atomweight division with a unanimous decision win over Chinese Taipei’s Jenny “Lady GoGo” Huang. Yamaguchi put her high-level grappling on full display as she was able to take Huang down with ease. Huang held her own thanks to her striking. But in the end, it wasn’t enough as Yamaguchi earned the decision victory to push her winning streak to three straight. Former ONE Strawweight World Champion and Shooto Strawweight World Champion Yosuke “The Ninja” Saruta evened things up between Shooto and Pancrase in impressive fashion, knocking out Pancrase Strawweight World Champion Daichi Kitakata in the second round. Saruta was dominant from the opening bell, controlling Kitakata in the grappling department. In the second round, Saruta made his way into Kitakata’s guard and from there landed a massive knockout punch to get the highlight-reel finish. Reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes of Brazil ended his rivalry with former titleholder Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon of the Philippines, winning by second round submission. After a brief exchange on the feet, Fernandes immediately shot in for a successful takedown, landing in side control. The Brazilian controlled Belingon with his top game for the majority of the first round. The second round saw Belingon come out firing, but Fernandes was relentless in his pursuit of the takedown. As Belingon left Fernandes an opening, the champion swiftly capitalized to take his back. Moments later, Fernandes sunk in a deep rear naked choke to force the tap. Shooto Bantamweight World Champion Shoko Sato pulled one back for Team Shooto after defeating Pancrase Bantamweight World Champion Rafael “Morcego” Silva via technical knockout in the second round. Silva was relentless in his attempt to bring the action to the ground, but Sato was able to defend well. In the second round, Sato popped out of a takedown attempt and landed barrage of knees and punches to finish Silva off and score the first stoppage win of the night. In an intense showdown between welterweight competitors, Pancrase World Champion Hiroyuki “Last Samurai” Tetsuka and Shooto World Champion Hernani Perpetuo figured in a three-round war to the delight of the Ryogoku Kokugikan crowd. Although Perpetuo tried his best to match Tetsuka with every strike, the Japanese warrior proved much too powerful. After three rounds of solid action, it was Tetsuka who came out on top. Kicking off the action at ONE: CENTURY 世紀 PART II was Pancrase Lightweight World Champion Takasuke “Hawk” Kume who overcame a spirited effort from Shooto Lightweight World Champion Koshi “Luxor” Matsumoto to win by unanimous decision. It was a closely-contested bout through three rounds, with both men doing tremendous work in stand-up and grappling exchanges. In the end however, Kume did just enough to impress the judges and come away with the nod across the board.
