Every Drop Counts: PCPPI Champions Responsible Water Usage

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI), the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country, remains on course in its commitment to promote responsible water stewardship across its operations. In 2023, the organization’s overall water usage rate reduced by 5.4% from the previous year. This demonstrates PCPPI’s continued initiatives in ensuring proper water use, particularly in the production process.

PCPPI complies with global standards and as prescribed by PepsiCo in conducting water use audits that monitor consumption across its facilities. As much as 50% of the organization’s water use is dedicated to washers for returnable glass bottles. To maximize efficiency, equipment maintenance and updates are scheduled regularly. Training courses and policy refresher sessions on proper machine use are also conducted to keep technical teams informed on best practices and operating standards. These learning opportunities ensure that employees uphold safety and avoid production-related incidents.

Reducing the frequency Clean-In-Place (CIP) procedures in select facilities amplifies PCPPI’s efforts in reducing water use, Each CIP procedure uses an estimated 30 cubic meters of water to ensure cleanliness in the production area. Aside from extending operation hours, PCPPI is also optimizing CIP periods by using recycled water.

PCPPI has been a steadfast partner of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the local governments where it operates with the Adopt-A-River Program. This initiative allows organizations to look after and care for bodies of water in the areas where they operate. At present, PCPPI’s locations in Cebu, Pampanga, Davao, Leyte, Zamboanga and its home city of Muntinlupa have ongoing agreements with their respective local governments.

The bigger picture

March 22 marks World Water Day, an initiative of the United Nations (UN) that promotes responsible use of and better access to safe water. PCPPI remains committed to furthering its position as a champion of water stewardship, especially since the resource is vital to its operations. Aside from the programs mentioned earlier, the organization empowers its employees to develop smarter, more innovative ways to uphold global standards while ensuring that water usage is managed and reduced over time.

“At PCPPI, we are continuously improving our processes to make sure that our operations utilize resources wisely,” said Chief Environmental, Social, and Governance Officer Atty. Carina S. Bayon. “Aside from arming our employees with the necessary trainings and industry best practices, we work closely with government stakeholders and community leaders in advocating a sustainable future,” she added.

Celebrating Life With Mirinda

MIRINDA

Summer may be over in Southeast Asia, but the Filipino’s all-season sunny disposition remains. Family gatherings and out-of-town trips continue. Mall days and night-outs keep most of us recharged, after a hard day’s work, with meals and ice-cold drinks in between. Aside from having the ability to swiftly look at the glass half-full, Pinoys make the most out of every opportunity to make every moment positive and fun.

“Filipinos treasure the bonds they share with family and friends. These ties are what we celebrate everyday through food and drink,” said Frederick D. Ong, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI), the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of PepsiCo beverages in the country.

As we are now in the second half of the year—and the post-pandemic world continues to move forward—PCPPI brings the fun everywhere with the fun, refreshing citrus drink Mirinda.

“Mirinda is the spirit of uninhibited fun. Its bright, tangy taste creates a complete multi-sensory experience. Its bold flavor will revitalize you,” Ong added.

A perfect drink to have in every family occasion, Mirinda is made with orange goodness that brings bursting citrusy spirits. Mirinda is available in RGB (8oz), PET (295ML, 1.25L, and 1.5L), and can (330ML) in supermarkets, convenience stores and select drugstores nationwide.

Aside from Mirinda, PCPPI also exclusively manufactures and distributes well-known beverage brands in the Philippines like Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Sting, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton, Mug, Premier, Milkis, Chum Churum Soonhari, and Aquafina. All PCPPI Manufacturing Plants receive Recommendation for Food Safety System Certification

PCPPI

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI) continues to embody how excellence is best demonstrated through commitment and consistency. PCPPI recently announced that all its manufacturing facilities across the country received recommendations for the coveted Food Safety System Certification (FSSC), with its Naga Plant being the most recent site to be certified.

Frederick D. Ong, the president and chief operating officer of PCPPI, said completing the FSSC status fulfills the organization’s unswerving commitment to developing a strong food safety and quality culture.

“At PCPPI, it has always been our mission to produce safe, high quality, and reliable products that deliver the best experience for our customers. It is imperative for us to adhere to global industry standards through continuously raising our performance. We do this by adapting to regulatory requirements and consumer demand, and embracing industry innovation,” said Ong.

Obtaining FSSC recognition provides PCPPI an advantage, as the certification recognizes its capacity to produce safe food and food packaging products, reduce hazards and incident risks, roll out resource optimization initiatives, reinforce its supply chain relationships, and maintain food safety protocols and programs.

The FSSC status was recommended by SGS, one of the top global audit and certification companies, following a period of undergoing a rigorous review process which was led by a dedicated Plant Audit Team. This team comprises representatives from across the facility’s functions: from food safety and logistics, to human resources and environmental health, safety, and security.

SGS tested the plants’ processes and policies in accordance with FSSC standards, which are aligned with ISO 22000 upon onsite inspection. FSSC evaluation is done annually, with scheduled and unannounced audit visits done.

“As we successfully complete our FSSC status, we are optimistic that this will enable more market opportunities for PCPPI and further grow the confidence of both internal and external stakeholders in our organization,” Ong added.

PCPPI operates 12 manufacturing facilities across the country. The FSSC-recommended facilities are Muntinlupa, San Fernando, Santo Tomas, Rosario, Davao, Bacolod, Naga, Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Tanauan, and Cebu City.

PCPPI is the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country. Other than Pepsi, it distributes well-loved brands such as Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Sting, Tropicana, Lipton Iced Tea, Milkis, Chum Churum Soonhari, and Premier Purified Water. Gatorade No Sugar Fuels Filipinos Forward this Summer

GATORADE NO SUGAR

Summer spells active fun under the sun. With the hot weather, more Filipinos embrace the great outdoors to spend time with friends or learn new skills and sports. But with the sweltering heat, the body loses more than water, as valuable nutrients to regulate basic functions are used up at quicker rates.

Medical journals and health experts warn that the likelihood of getting dehydrated is high during summertime. If not addressed immediately, the effects of dehydration may be irreparable and require lifelong treatment. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) reminds everyone to hydrate regularly and pay close attention to how much sugar is consumed during the dry season.

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI), the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country, supports this call by encouraging Filipinos to fight dehydration while staying fit and active with Gatorade No Sugar. This electrolyte drink helps recover the body’s lost minerals without the unnecessary calories from sugar.

Electrolytes are key to one’s physical performance and overall well-being, as they help balance the amount of water and nutrients in the body. They regulate nervous, motor, and cardiovascular functions so that mind and body perform as they should.

“We lose more than water when we sweat, and we must take the necessary steps to continue nourishing our bodies to keep healthy. Gatorade No Sugar is packed with electrolytes and essential nutrients to replenish our bodies’ supply especially during the humid Philippine summer,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.

Gatorade No Sugar helps ensure that more Filipinos get to enjoy being active this summer without compromising their health. It is available in leading convenience stores, supermarkets, and drug stores nationwide.

Aside from Gatorade, PCPPI also manufactures and distributes well-loved brands such as Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Sting, Tropicana, Lipton Iced Tea, Milkis, Chum Churum Soonhari, and Premier Purified Water. PCPPI Champions Quality Excellence Culture

PEPSI QUALITY CONTROL

Quality assurance and food safety are at the core of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc.’s (PCPPI) operations. The organization recently reinforced their commitment to uphold excellence in line with PCPPI and PepsiCo’s observance of World Quality Month this November.

“Customer satisfaction drives our commitment to excellence at PCPPI. We encourage employees to perform beyond expectations in line with our vision to be the country’s leading beverage company,” said PCCPI president and CEO Frederick D. Ong.

Compliance to stringent safety regulations ensures quality at PCPPI. All facilities received the Safety Seal Certification from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), certifying all plants and offices practice public health standards and occupational safety and health standards set by the government. PCPPI was also recognized for its compliance and enforcement efforts of COVID-19 health standards.

Accreditation and Certification
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is among the various organizations conducting regular audits on PCPPI’s facilities. Aside from ensuring compliance to food safety regulations, the FDA reviews PCPPI’s implementation of Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and compliance to the provisions of the facilities’ Licenses to Operate.

Currently, six of PCPPI plants have retained their Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) V5.1 through a comprehensive audit by reputable testing, inspection and certification authority SGS in early 2022. PCPPI’s plant in San Fernando, Pampanga also completed the first McDonald’s Social Welfare Accountability (SWA) and Supplier Quality Management System Audit (SQMS).

Quality and Food Safety Training
At PCPPI, development programs are in place to support ongoing learning for employees and business partners. Since 2015, over 1,800 employees and partners have enrolled in Level 1 Capability Building Program courses to broaden their understanding about quality assurance and food safety. Courses include Food Fraud Mitigation, Vulnerability Risk Assessment, and Statistical Process Control.

PCPPI’s pool of PepsiCo-certified site expert trainers have also conducted nearly 5,000 training hours. Certified training leaders have also completed courses focused on improving product quality and productivity.

Fostering Values through Engagement
Among PCPPI’s initiatives to further enhance the company-wide commitment to excellence are regular communication on policy updates, as well as best practice sharing across teams. Employees also undergo refresher courses on managing customer feedback in compliance with national regulations.

The organization’s focus on ensuring product and service quality goes beyond mere process. PCPPI upholds excellence as one of its core values. “Excellence is a shared responsibility. By holding ourselves accountable to our standards, we aim to continuously inspire our employees to remain steadfast in our commitment to delivering the best value to all our stakeholders,” added Ong.
