Embracing Sustainability in the Workplace

In line with its commitments, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PPCPI) continues to develop programs and methods to ensure that its employees can fully appreciate and embrace the value of sustainability as part of their lives. The exclusive manufacturer and distributor of well-loved brands such as Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Gatorade, PCPPI holds itself accountable to three key pillars in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: inclusive business, water stewardship, and circular economy.

“Today’s consumers exercise a keener sense of discernment, particularly when it relates to the values of the companies they support,” said Atty. Carina S. Bayon, PCPPI’s Chief Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Officer. “For PCPPI, sustainability has always been at the heart of our operations. From encouraging process and technological innovation to employee education and engagement, we make a conscious effort to create positive impact on society, the environment, and the communities where we operate,” she added.

Caring for the environment remains a top priority for PCPPI, and programs that encourage employees to adopt mindful habits is key. For example, waste segregation is practiced across its facilities as part of its guidelines. There are separate bins for recyclable and non-recyclable waste materials to allow the proper handling and recycling of items that may still be processed for alternative use.

Select PCPPI offices also utilize LED and motion sensor lights, as they consume less energy compared to regular incandescent lights. Through the annual Working Environment Measurement (a sampling method for measuring work environment or conditions) review conducted by its Environment, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) team, management gets to ensure that all of PCPPI offices and production facilities observe optimal working conditions for employee well-being and operational productivity.

PCPPI employees are also encouraged to bring their own reusable utensils at work, like stainless utensils and bamboo tumblers. Water refilling stations are also set up to minimize the use of plastic cups when employees refresh themselves throughout the day. Going digital also allows employees to reduce paper use, as emails, conferencing platforms, and other network-based channels facilitating information exchange and collaboration across PCPPI’s offices nationwide.

Atty. Bayon shared that aside from saving on expenses, implementing sustainability-focused policies in the workplace can contribute to employee health and well-being, as well as a shared sense of purpose. “Achieving sustainability is a shared responsibility—there’s no single team or department that carries it forward. It is the promise of creating a better future for generations to come drives us at PCPPI to champion this cause as we practice responsible operations,” she said.

PCPPI is the Philippines’ exclusive manufacturer and distributor of well-known beverage brands such as Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Gatorade, Tropicana, Lipton Iced Tea, Sting, Premier, Chum Churum Soonhari, and Milkis. Gatorade No Sugar Fuels Filipinos Forward this Summer

GATORADE NO SUGAR

Summer spells active fun under the sun. With the hot weather, more Filipinos embrace the great outdoors to spend time with friends or learn new skills and sports. But with the sweltering heat, the body loses more than water, as valuable nutrients to regulate basic functions are used up at quicker rates.

Medical journals and health experts warn that the likelihood of getting dehydrated is high during summertime. If not addressed immediately, the effects of dehydration may be irreparable and require lifelong treatment. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) reminds everyone to hydrate regularly and pay close attention to how much sugar is consumed during the dry season.

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI), the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country, supports this call by encouraging Filipinos to fight dehydration while staying fit and active with Gatorade No Sugar. This electrolyte drink helps recover the body’s lost minerals without the unnecessary calories from sugar.

Electrolytes are key to one’s physical performance and overall well-being, as they help balance the amount of water and nutrients in the body. They regulate nervous, motor, and cardiovascular functions so that mind and body perform as they should.

“We lose more than water when we sweat, and we must take the necessary steps to continue nourishing our bodies to keep healthy. Gatorade No Sugar is packed with electrolytes and essential nutrients to replenish our bodies’ supply especially during the humid Philippine summer,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.

Gatorade No Sugar helps ensure that more Filipinos get to enjoy being active this summer without compromising their health. It is available in leading convenience stores, supermarkets, and drug stores nationwide.

Aside from Gatorade, PCPPI also manufactures and distributes well-loved brands such as Pepsi-Cola, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, Mirinda, Mug, Sting, Tropicana, Lipton Iced Tea, Milkis, Chum Churum Soonhari, and Premier Purified Water. PCPPI Champions Quality Excellence Culture

PEPSI QUALITY CONTROL

Quality assurance and food safety are at the core of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc.’s (PCPPI) operations. The organization recently reinforced their commitment to uphold excellence in line with PCPPI and PepsiCo’s observance of World Quality Month this November.

“Customer satisfaction drives our commitment to excellence at PCPPI. We encourage employees to perform beyond expectations in line with our vision to be the country’s leading beverage company,” said PCCPI president and CEO Frederick D. Ong.

Compliance to stringent safety regulations ensures quality at PCPPI. All facilities received the Safety Seal Certification from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), certifying all plants and offices practice public health standards and occupational safety and health standards set by the government. PCPPI was also recognized for its compliance and enforcement efforts of COVID-19 health standards.

Accreditation and Certification
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is among the various organizations conducting regular audits on PCPPI’s facilities. Aside from ensuring compliance to food safety regulations, the FDA reviews PCPPI’s implementation of Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and compliance to the provisions of the facilities’ Licenses to Operate.

Currently, six of PCPPI plants have retained their Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) V5.1 through a comprehensive audit by reputable testing, inspection and certification authority SGS in early 2022. PCPPI’s plant in San Fernando, Pampanga also completed the first McDonald’s Social Welfare Accountability (SWA) and Supplier Quality Management System Audit (SQMS).

Quality and Food Safety Training
At PCPPI, development programs are in place to support ongoing learning for employees and business partners. Since 2015, over 1,800 employees and partners have enrolled in Level 1 Capability Building Program courses to broaden their understanding about quality assurance and food safety. Courses include Food Fraud Mitigation, Vulnerability Risk Assessment, and Statistical Process Control.

PCPPI’s pool of PepsiCo-certified site expert trainers have also conducted nearly 5,000 training hours. Certified training leaders have also completed courses focused on improving product quality and productivity.

Fostering Values through Engagement
Among PCPPI’s initiatives to further enhance the company-wide commitment to excellence are regular communication on policy updates, as well as best practice sharing across teams. Employees also undergo refresher courses on managing customer feedback in compliance with national regulations.

The organization’s focus on ensuring product and service quality goes beyond mere process. PCPPI upholds excellence as one of its core values. “Excellence is a shared responsibility. By holding ourselves accountable to our standards, we aim to continuously inspire our employees to remain steadfast in our commitment to delivering the best value to all our stakeholders,” added Ong.

PCPPI Reminds Filipinos to Hydrate for Your Health

Hydrate Pepsi

This World Health Day, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI)–the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country–reiterates the value of hydration this summer season.

Drinking enough water and other essential fluids has the following health benefits:

· Regulates body temperature
· Delivers nutrients to cells
· Prevents infections
· Allows organs to function properly
· Improves one’s mood, cognition, and sleep quality

Medical experts encourage 15 to 20-minute daily exercises to boost our immune system, but excessive sweating may cause dehydration and mineral deficiency.

More than water, sports drinks can replace the minerals lost during exercise. One of these is Gatorade, a drink that contains electrolytes to help maintain the body’s ionic balance.

According to the medical website familydoctor.org, “sports drinks can be helpful if you’re planning on exercising at higher levels for more than an hour. These drinks contain carbohydrates and electrolytes that can increase your energy.”

PCPPI also produces Gatorade ION, formulated for everyday hydration with ions, low sodium, no preservatives, and no artificial flavors and colors.

"Whether you are playing sports, walking under in the sun, or even working from home, the body needs a little boost from hydration drinks. PCPPI has products that will help you stay hydrated, whatever your lifestyle is," said PCPPI President and Chief Executive Officer Frederick D. Ong.

PCPPI further highlighted the importance of hydration given the threats of COVID-19 and what it can do to our bodies.

According to the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), “hydration and nutrition play an important role in our bodies' response to and recovery from COVID 19 and is an important part of your medical treatment.”

ASPEN stated that drinking "supports the body's ability to fight the virus and support the body's immune function.”

“As a company that manufactures beverages, we need to keep our consumers hydrated, especially if they are fighting against any disease, to maintain their body’s full function,” added Ong.

PCPPI’s Playbook on New Normal Promotes Self-Care and Mental Well-Being

Pepsi

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought uncertainties and disruptions in the lives of most Filipinos, including businesses nationwide.

When the National Government mandated all business establishments to implement COVID-19 Prevention and Control Measures to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. (PCPPI) complied and implemented immediate and essential changes in its operations in order to ensure the safety and well-being of its people.

PCPPI created a playbook that contains action points, polices and procedures, and served as a primary guide to the company’s “new normal.”

“This playbook aims to help our employees, or our Bravehearts, get and stay on track. It offers easy-to-read tips and measures as we return to work and live under the new normal. This also reminds us to continue caring for ourselves and one another. I hope that with this playbook, our employees will be able to re-build their momentum and work with renewed strength, so we can help sustain our organization and continue its growth during and beyond the new normal,” PCPPI President and CEO Frederick Ong said.

PCPPI believes improving one’s health and well-being is fundamental in the country’s fight against COVID-19. This playbook is also meant to promote mental health awareness through effective people management.

“Aside from educating and enforcing the new working protocols that both the government and science prescribe on the new normal, that includes frequent hand washing, social distancing, and wearing of face mask/shield, in PCPPI, we understand that our employees’ health and welfare start mainly with self-care and their mental well-being,” Ong added.
The company encourages its employees to practice self-care. Their own health and well-being must come first before anyone and anything else. The playbook also provides mental health care tips, as mental health is as important as physical health, especially during this time of a pandemic.

It is important to stay socially connected while physically distanced. Here are PCPPI’s pieces of advice in mental health care:

• Maintain connection with friends, family and loved ones. Leverage on technology.
• Develop coping skills.
• Seek medical and professional help when needed.
Embracing changes

PCPPI welcomed changes through three interdependent focus areas in the playbook. The first focus area dubbed “Great to be back,” highlighted the importance of getting correct information and guide on the new normal; the second focus area called “Great to be Pepsi” talked about setting the right mindset as employees embark on the new normal; and lastly, the “Great for others” focus area is about taking action for others and the environment.

The company also conducted a series of webinar on COVID-19, with Dr. Yvonne Ferrer of DLSU Department of Pharmacology; and on Stress Management for employees to deal with the effects of the pandemic, work-from-home set-up, and preparing them for the new normal.

“It is our goal to maintain a healthy balance to support our employees, the community, and the business. The company is committed to remain responsible in delivering our obligations in service to the Filipino people,” Ong added. “Let us make it a social responsibility to look after ourselves, customers, families, friends, organization, community and the environment, all pulling together to move forward.”
