Western Union Launches New Mobile App in the Philippines

MANILA, 1 OCTOBER 2025 – Western Union today announced the launch of a new mobile app in the Philippines, giving millions of consumers in the country the power to send funds abroad, enjoying competitive FX rates in the process, and request remittances in a new way that adds convenience and flexibility. The Philippines is the first global market where Western Union launches an app with both send and request capabilities.

Consumers who download and use the app can send funds abroad seamlessly, and through Western Union’s global financial network gain access to billions of bank accounts, millions of digital wallets and cards, and hundreds of thousands of retail locations for cash payout. To send funds, app users have the option to pay online securely using the national QR code payment method ‘QR Ph’. Signing up to use the app is easy and takes up only a few minutes.
Equally, consumers who use the app can request funds from senders in the U.S., Australia, Singapore the UK and several other global markets with large Filipino diasporas present1, simply by filling their receiver info. Senders will then be able to complete the transaction online from the country they reside in. Receivers have multiple options to access their funds: cash withdrawal at a retail location, deposit to bank account or directly to a digital wallet, depending on the market. Additionally, when funds are sent by Senders from abroad to the Philippines, their Receivers will be able to redirect the funds to their preferred bank account or digital wallet2. Consumers can track their transfers by entering the transaction tracking number (MTCN) in the app.

“Today’s launch marks an important milestone in our effort to serve consumers in the Philippines better and connect them to their families and loved ones across the world,” said Gregory Laurent, Vice President for the Philippines, Japan, Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Islands at Western Union. “For many in the country, remittances represent a life with more opportunity and hope. At the same time, an increasing number of Filipinos opt to send funds abroad. Our new app gives the opportunity to do both, with the flexibility and trust that Western Union can provide.”
According to data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, remittances to the Philippines reached an all-time high of $38bn in 2024. According to the World Bank, the Philippines had the fourth-highest remittance levels among low- and middle-income countries last year. The United States was the biggest source of cash remittances in 2024, followed by Singapore.

The app is available on the App Store and Google Play.

GCash, Western Union Expand Global ‘Cash In’ to Over 200 Markets to Serve More Filipinos Globally

The Philippines’ leading finance super app, GCash, is expanding its global ‘cash in’ feature through a strategic partnership with Western Union, one of the world’s most trusted international money transfer providers, with a global financial network spanning over 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Filipinos living and working overseas may ‘cash in’ (send money) to GCash e-wallet accounts through the Western Union App, website, or through a network of hundreds of thousands of retail locations worldwide. Additionally, they can also send funds to their families and friends with GCash accounts. Once completed, funds are credited instantly to the GCash wallet and can be used immediately for essentials such as groceries, bills, online shopping, savings, insurance, or even investments. Customers can now send up to PHP 500,000 per transaction.

“At GCash, we remain committed to driving financial empowerment for all Filipinos, wherever they are in the world,” said GCash International general manager Paul Albano. “This collaboration with Western Union enables fast, secure, and reliable remittances, ensuring that the hard-earned money of OFWs reaches their families swiftly and safely.”

Western Union’s global scale now connects with the extensive local cashless ecosystem of GCash—the largest in the country. GCash users in the Philippines benefit from over 339,000 cash-in and cash-out outlets, 5.2 million QR-accepting merchants, and more than 520 partner brands on the GLife platform.

Gregory Laurent, regional vice president, Philippines, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands for Western Union, said, “our partnership with GCash, one the the Philippines’ most respected financial services brands, enables us to stay true to our purpose of serving the aspiring populations of the world with accessible, easy-to-use services, particularly in the digital space. It is yet another mark of the importance we place on the Philippines and consumers in the country, as well as the Filipino diaspora abroad.”

For millions of OFWs, this integration removes long-standing friction in the remittance process and strengthens their ability to support their families from afar. GCash continues to evolve from a money transfer platform into a holistic digital finance hub that serves the needs of Filipinos, wherever they may be.

According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), personal remittances from OFWs reached USD 38 billion in 2024, an all-time high and accounting for over 8% of the country’s GDP.

“While digital adoption is accelerating, a significant portion of these remittances is still routed through over-the-counter channels. The integration of GCash with Western Union provides a digital-first alternative that empowers OFWs and their families to manage money more efficiently, securely, and on their terms,” said Albano.

Converting digital money into cash has just become easier and more accessible for many Filipinos across the Philippines as GCash, the country’s leading finance super app and largest cashless ecosystem, announced the rollout of its ‘Cash Out’ service in more than 3,500 branches of Palawan Pawnshop nationwide.

The recent addition of Palawan Pawnshop as a Cash Out partner further expands the reach of GCash and ensures convenience and accessibility for all users, which is an essential part of its vision of achieving “Finance for All”.

“This partnership makes it simple for our users to convert digital money into physical cash,” said GCash general manager of B2B, Jong Layug. “Palawan Pawnshop’s extensive branch network makes it a critical partner in our thrust toward providing our customers unparalleled accessibility and convenience.”

Palawan Group’s chief business development officer, Lisa Castro-Sabado, expressed excitement about this milestone partnership, saying: “The Palawan Group and GCash share one thing: we are both Filipino-owned, and service-to-Filipinos-oriented. This collaboration will certainly open doors to more opportunities of serving our kababayans better, wherever they are in the Philippines.”

Despite advances in digital payment infrastructure in the country, many Filipinos continue to rely on cash payment for their everyday transactions, especially in remote areas. Thus, partnering with Palawan Pawnshop, with its extensive presence across the country, will encourage more Filipinos to avail themselves of digital financial services as they can now easily turn their digital money into cash.

In addition to withdrawals, GCash and Palawan Pawnshop are also working on integrating the latter’s insurance products into GInsure, expanding the range of insurance options for GCash users. Users can access the Cash Out feature through the GCash app, generate a reference code, and present it at any Palawan Pawnshop branch. Transactions are processed within minutes.

The collaboration is part of GCash’s ongoing strategy to provide omnichannel financial services, offering users convenience and accessibility to digital financial solutions, while also maintaining access to physical cash when needed. Palawan Pawnshop joins a growing list of GCash partners in its cash-out network, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to serving its customers wherever they are.

LBC Business Innovations shared at PH Digicon 2022

LBC DIGICON 2022

Manila, Philippines – Top courier company LBC is fully embracing various business innovations to keep itself relevant to the market and responsive to its ever-growing customer base.

This was shared Senior Vice President and Head of the Information Technology division Alexander Francis Deato the premier thought leadership event BOUNDLESS: Philippine Digital Convention 2022 (PH Digicon 2022) during his talk on “Dissuading Digital Hesitation & Propelling Digital Transformation” last October. 28.

Deato said that as an enterprise LBC is constantly evolving and embracing new technologies and innovations. Exploring strategic insights, looking at technologies that can be adopted, and leaning on the expertise of its workforce enables LBC to go through its transformation journey and remain as relevant as ever.

“We make technology work for the enterprise, so we can focus on our core business, which is logistics”, he said.  As the Philippines’ first proponent of the internet and e-commerce, LBC had the first on-line gift shop - the Express Regalo - the first on-line flower delivery through Flowers Express, the first on-line entertainment gifting through the singing telegram, and Digiprint, a popular printing shop that also provides photo delivery. “LBC pioneered services that address a variety of meaningful needs through the use of technology and skilled people who can handle complex processes,” Deato said.

The pandemic brought with it a host of challenges, from lockdowns, transportation restrictions, and the company’s teams of riders and warehouse workers performing their duties while avoiding the dreaded virus.  But because the management brought into the need to transform digitally earlier, starting from their president Miguel Angel Camahort, it became imperative to make everyone involved understand their role and how their contributions build to the overall goal.

“The first order of business was to make the rounds in all local areas, across the country, and around the world. The transformation launch addresses all aspects of LBC, including focused operations, support systems, data analytics, and customer care service tools.”

Deato revealed that LBC’s HR department has gone digital and automated with many services digitally accessible to all employees and enabled the company to easily shift to a work-from-home environment.

LBC also managed its resources with greater speed and efficiency.  From using networked data on the cloud, migrate to off-premise data storage, to launching a feature-filled customer app, and introducing platform as a service, the company was able to launch new products in shorter time periods.  “This allowed us to be more agile in adapting to changing business requirements and improving our offerings,” Deato said.

“We will continue to focus on our core competencies while adapting to evolving technologies and attempting to understand each segment of our customers. Giving them what they require at a level to which they can adapt. Hopefully, we can all transition them to the digital future that awaits them. At LBC, we keep moving for the better!”

BOUNDLESS: Philippine Digital Convention 2022 (PH Digicon 2022) was held at the Marriott Grand Ballroom.

Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation makes Education Accessible to Grassroots Communities with 100th ALS Center

Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation

REBUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION. Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation (CLFI) supports the rehabilitation of Marawi by providing learning tools and devices in Amai Pakpak Central Elementary School (APCES) for its alternative learning sessions. In the photo: (L-R) Fatime Mognie, Chief of the Curriculum Implementation Division; Anna Zenaida Unte-Alonto, OIC of Schools Division Superintendent;  Amai Pakpak Central Elementary School teachers and ALS educators.

Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc. (CLFI), the social responsibility arm of Cebuana Lhuillier, the largest micro financial service provider in the country, celebrated the launching of its 100th Alternative Learning System-Community Learning Center (ALS-CLC) at Amai Pakpak Elementary School in Marawi City.

The 2017-armed conflict caused massive destruction that displaced a great majority of Marawi city’s population. As the local community leaders work towards rebuilding the lives of affected individuals and families, CLFI extended assistance to Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Office of Marawi to foster recovery and learning continuity amid present conditions. CLFI donated ICT equipment and supplies for the ALS teachers in Amai Pakpak Central Elementary School.

“As part of its inclusion advocacy, CLFI is always committed to provide accessible quality education for all, especially for the underserved Filipinos. To significantly help the rehabilitation efforts of Marawi, we focused our efforts on education—ensuring that children and adult learners have access to basic education,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, President and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier.

To fully equip the newly established ALS-CLC in Marawi City, CLFI donated learning tools and devices, including laptops, printers, LED TV, Wi-Fi routers, and load cards -- which will further enable ALS teachers to facilitate online and modular learning sessions for 400 registered ALS learners.

OIC of Schools Division Superintendent, Anna Zenaida Unte-Alonto, receives the learning tools donated by Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc.

“The entirety of the city schools division of Marawi would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our great partner, Cebuana Lhuillier. All these will help our educators and learners to adapt to the new system of education under the new normal,” OIC Schools Division Superintendent, Anna Zenaida Unte-Alonto said.

Driven by its advocacy to make education accessible, CLFI has always been a staunch supporter of DepEd’s ALS program. Since 2013, CLFI has been supporting ALS community learning centers to give out-of-school youth and adult learners a second chance at education.

The 100th ALS-CLC sponsored by the Foundation is a testament to our firm belief that all Filipinos should have access to quality education. We are elated to see how the company’s advocacy for education can uplift both young and adult learners and help improve their lives,” First Vice President and Group Head for CLFI, Jonathan Batangan said.

Protect Lives and Livelihood with These Easy Fire Prevention Tips and with Cebuana Lhuillier ProtectMax

Cebuana Lhuillier ProtectMax

In the first two months of 2022 alone, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) announced that fire incidents have already increased by almost 13% compared to the same period last year. In addition, back in 2020, data from BFP also showed that open flame due to torch, unattended cooking, and electrical connections are the main causes of fire accidents.

Like other threats and risks of loss in any unfortunate events such as natural calamities, impacts due to fire and negligence mishaps, thousands of lives and millions up to billions worth of properties are being lost every year, and the need for a financial tool arises to make financial impacts less severe.

“Damage caused by fire is insurmountable. It affects the lives and livelihood of many Filipinos, regardless of their economic status in life. Unfortunately, our kababayans in the marginalized sector can experience bigger risk and more profound impact. Backed by our commitment for financial inclusion, we also want common Filipinos to be able to afford protection and security as a part of their financial plan. It is crucial that they have access to basic security requirements to cushion the blow of disasters that may happen,” Cebuana Lhuillier CEO and President, Jean Henri Lhuillier said.

As the country observes the annual Fire Prevention Month, here are some tips from the BFP to make sure that your house is safe from fire:

1. Unplug appliances when they are not in use

Unplugging items when not in use not only reduces your electricity consumption but also cuts down the chances of a fire. Excessive electricity flowing through appliances like TV sets, computers, and a lot more – or a possibility of power surge can be a source of conflagration.

Make sure to always unplug your appliances when leaving the house.

2. Never leave flames or heated appliances unattended

Always be cautious of any excessive flames that you may use like lighting candles or cooking. Always keep an eye and one step ahead if anything goes wrong. Much better if you can install fire alarms or have fire extinguishers ready, nearby.

3. Keep flammable items away from things that can be a source of fire

Proper storage of different items and supplies can prevent a fire incident. Ensuring that flammable items are stored in the right place and are far away from a source of heat, can save you from a possible accident.

4. Declutter

Too many things cluttered in an area can give fire plenty of space to spread faster. By decluttering certain areas in your home, you’ll be able to minimize the risk of spreading fire, minimize your loss, and save your home in the event of a fire.

5. Check your electrical wirings regularly

Pay close attention to any visible faulty wirings. This can damage your appliances that can eventually lead to a fire incident.

Always remember that prevention is always better than cure. Knowing these fire prevention tips could save you and others from a devastating event.

“This Fire Prevention Month, it is important to raise awareness about fire safety and prevention. Apart from being ready when a fire incident happens, it is also important that common Filipinos have a safety net in case it happened. This is our main mission for our microinsurance product, ProtectMax. This product offers comprehensive coverage at a more reasonable cost,” First Vice President and Group Head of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Brokers Inc., Jonathan Batangan mentioned.

To lessen the risk brought by fire and other natural calamities, Cebuana Lhuiller offers ProtectMAX, an affordable microinsurance product designed for individuals aged 7 to 70 years old with Death Benefit, Accident or Sickness Emergency Cash Assistance, Accidental Dismemberment and/or Disablement, Murder, and Unprovoked Assault and Residential Fire Reconstruction cash assistance.

For as low as P50, get a total coverage value of up to P61,000.00. Each certificate is valid for four (4) months from the date of issuance and can be availed up to a maximum of 5 certificates per insured in a year.

To know more about Cebuana Lhuillier ProtectMAX, visit the nearest Cebuana Lhuillier branch or just log on to www.cebuanalhuillier.com. Avail ProtectMAX now in almost 3,000 branches of Cebuana Lhuillier, nationwide.
