Jollibee Group Stores and Facilities Show Sustained Support for Earth Hour 2024

MANILA, Philippines. 22 March 2024 – Over 4,700 stores and facilities of the  Jollibee Group from the Philippines, China, North America, Europe, Middle East, and Asia will be turning their lights off on Earth Hour this March 23, 2024, in solidarity with over 190 countries to raise awareness about the environmental impact on the planet of climate change.

Jollibee, Mang Inasal, Chowking, Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Panda Express, Yoshinoya, Burger King, and Common Man Coffee Roasters branches in the Philippines, as well as Tim Ho Wan, Yonghe King, and Hong Zhuang Yuan restaurants in China, Highlands Coffee in Vietnam, and Jollibee, Smashburger, and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf branches in North America and Canada will give an hour for the Earth--from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (local time)- as they will simultaneously turn their lights off including signage and billboards on their facilities.

Pepot Miñana Jr., Jollibee Group’s Chief Sustainability and Public Affairs Officer, emphasized: “We believe that all actions count in helping ensure a sustainable future. While participating in Earth Hour starts with turning off the lights, it serves a bigger purpose of being a visible and important reminder that we can take deliberate steps to make a profound difference on the planet.”

Energy management priority

Energy Efficiency is one of the major focus areas under the Jollibee Group’s Sustainability Agenda called Joy for Tomorrow. Under this priority area, the Company has set reduction goals and initiatives that are aligned with and contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly “Affordable and Clean Energy” (Goal #7) and “Responsible Consumption and Production” (Goal #12).

The Jollibee Group has implemented several energy-saving measures in its stores and commissaries to manifest this goal. This year, the Company will continue increasing the total number of solar-paneled stores to 64, on top of solar installations in its facilities.

After powering up an extensive 6,300 solar panel installation in its Canlubang Baking Facility last January, the Jollibee Group's supply chain will mark another milestone by solarizing its two remaining sites, C3 and Jollibee Worldwide Services Logistics, by the second quarter of 2024.

To continuously contribute to the Company's growing sustainable business practices, these manufacturing and logistics sites are targeting to improve its energy reduction further by the end of the year, following their achievement of a 28.2% reduction in energy use ratio in 2023.

Held annually on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages around 190 countries and territories, inspiring millions of people to act and reduce the consumption of natural resources by turning off lights for an hour.

Jollibee Group Powers Up its Largest Solar Panel Installation to Date

Jollibee Group Powers Up its Largest Solar Panel Installation to Date

MANILA, Philippines. 07 February 2024. –  The Jollibee Group continues to accelerate its shift to renewable energy by operating 6,300 solar panels in its Canlubang Baking Facility (CBF), the company's most extensive solar panel installation to date. This initiative is part of the Jollibee Group’s commitment to more sustainable business practices guided by its global sustainability agenda, Joy for Tomorrow.

The Jollibee Group, through its subsidiary Zenith Foods Corporation (ZFC), has collaborated with First Gen Corporation, through Pi Energy Inc., to energize 1/3 of the Jollibee Group’s manufacturing facility with solar-powered electricity. Officials of both the Jollibee Group and First Gen Corporation led the switch-on rites together with Calamba City Mayor Roseller Rizal last January 9, 2024, in Canlubang, Laguna.

During the ceremony, Jollibee Group Supply Chain Head Michael Ong underscored the company’s drive to lessen the environmental impact of its supply chain operations. "In our quest to bring the joy of eating not only for today's generation but that of tomorrow's, we integrate solar energy into our state-of-the-art Canlubang Baking Facility. This is our largest installation to date, but this is also just the beginning. We have more locations planned in the months ahead, and we are determined to accelerate further our journey towards carbon neutrality," he said.

Calamba City Mayor Ross Rizal cited the project's role in helping achieve the city's goals on sustainability for the business community. "Your [ZFC] initiative to promote sustainability in your facilities will not only have positive results for your company, but it will also be in solidarity with the government's call for a more orderly operation of companies that considers many factors, including those that concern our environment," he said.

Ong and his team at ZFC started accelerating the integration of sustainable business practices into the Jollibee Group’s commissaries and logistics centers in 2020. The Canlubang Baking Facility is now the second out of the four target sites for solar panel installation. The first one was Zen3, also in Canlubang, which was installed with 3,000 solar panels last November 2023. The solar panel installation in the two other sites is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2024.

These commissaries and logistics centers support the Jollibee Group's portfolio of brands in the Philippines, such as Jollibee, Greenwich, Burger King, Red Ribbon, Chowking, and Mang Inasal.

Solarizing for the future

First Gen constructed four rooftop solar power plants for ZFC's commissaries, cold storage, and logistics facilities.

Carlo Vega, First Gen's Vice President for Power Marketing, Trading, and Economics, said, "We are thankful to Jollibee Group’s ZFC for their trust in our company to be their reliable energy partner in our shared vision of a cleaner and greener future for this generation and the next."

A journey towards more sustainability

From the established 2020 baseline data, Ong shared that, apart from solar energy use, the Jollibee Group manufacturing sites across the country have reduced their waste by 38% as of 2022.  Furthermore, the manufacturing facilities have decreased their water use ratio by 23% and energy use ratio by 21.5%.

"We learned that our impact on the planet revolves around three critical areas: energy, water, and waste. With this newfound awareness, we embrace the challenge of 'Joy for Tomorrow,' and we set out to establish strategies, systems, and initiatives that will allow us to treat our planet more responsibly," said Jose Miñana Jr., Jollibee Group’s Chief Sustainability and Public Affairs Officer.

Jollibee Group Ramps Up Solar Power Use for Commissaries, Logistics Centers, & Restaurants

JOLLIBEE RENEWABLE ENERGY

MANILA, Philippines. – In keeping with the company's sustainability “Joy for Tomorrow” agenda, the Jollibee Group recently announced that it is further accelerating its shift to renewable energy through solar panel installations in its stores, commissaries, and logistics centers.

"Our focus on environmentally responsible practices drives us to adopt renewable energy sources, on top of efforts to decrease our overall energy consumption. By installing solar panels in our commissaries, logistics centers down to our stores, we are able to harness energy that is friendlier to the planet so that future generations may continue to enjoy it, " said Ernesto Tanmantiong, Jollibee Group President & CEO.

Network of Solar-Powered Stores

The Jollibee Group made history in 2014 by becoming the first restaurant chain to harness solar energy, initially implementing solar panels in six of its stores. Since then, the Jollibee Group has consistently expanded its use of solar power.

By the end of 2022, the company has equipped 28 stores in various parts of the country with solar panels, including 19 Jollibee, seven (7) Chowking, and two (2) Mang Inasal branches. Aside from providing renewable energy, solar panel integration also improves cost-efficiency of business operations delivering from 5% to 35% of the store's energy needs.

In the current year, an additional 16 stores are slated to incorporate solar panels into their operations. By 2024, another 20 stores will be added, bringing the total count to 64. Combined with its solar panel integrated commissaries and logistics centers, this manifests Jollibee Group’s commitment to continuously better its sustainability practices.

Shared Commitment to Going Green

The Jollibee Group recognizes that implementing and fast-tracking its sustainability agenda demands collective commitment and collaborative action. As such, the company encourages franchisees to grow their businesses with sustainability in mind.

Over the years, more franchise stores have chosen to use solar energy. Jeannie Posas, a franchisee who owns several stores across various brands of the Jollibee Group, has installed solar panels in her stores – four (4) Jollibee, one (1) Mang Inasal, and one (1) Red Ribbon store. She is installing solar panels in three (3) more Jollibee stores in Davao.

Posas views solar panel installation as fundamentally right for the environment and right for business. She noted, "On average, the power generated from solar panels will contribute to around 5-12% of our daily requirements. But we believe it offers a bigger advantage, allowing us to give back and make the world a better place."

"We also took the cue from the Jollibee Group, their initiatives, and their eagerness to get us onboard with the effort to install solar panels. We especially appreciate their support during the entire process, from the initial stages of the installation down to the assessment of the actual performance of the solar panels," Posas added.

In the case of Jollibee Camiling in Tarlac, located at Wishing Well Plaza Mall, the store’s franchisee, Albert Tan, took the initiative to find innovative solutions in locating a suitable placement for their solar panels. “We’re happy to support the Jollibee Group in their thrust towards treating the planet responsibly,” said Tan.

"We know that transitioning to solar energy would not be easy and it would entail physical and financial requirements, but we and our franchisees know that it is worth doing," said Tanmantiong. “This initiative goes beyond generating cost efficiencies for operations. This represents diverse groups coming together to contribute towards a more sustainable future.”

Sustainable Commissaries and Logistics Centers

Amid the pandemic in 2020, Jollibee Group’s commissaries and logistics centers, which support the company’s varied portfolio of brands in the Philippines, has beefed up its sustainable business practices, that aims to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

Solar panel installation is underway in two of its state-of-the-art commissaries in Canlubang, Laguna, with expected completion by December 30, 2023. Installation at other sites, such as the Jollibee Worldwide Services Logistics Center, is set to be finished by the second quarter of 2024.

"The implementation of solar panel systems across two manufacturing sites and a logistics center presents an exciting opportunity to harness clean energy. This initiative will effectively transform approximately 18% of the total energy consumption at these three facilities into renewable energy sources," explained Jose Miñana Jr., Jollibee Group Chief Sustainability and Public Affairs Officer.

The use of solar panels forms part of the wide array of initiatives that Jollibee Group has implemented in its commissaries and logistics centers to continue enhancing its responsible practices. These initiatives are integral components of the Jollibee Group's global sustainability agenda known as "Joy for Tomorrow."

“We place a strong emphasis on taking care of the planet in our sustainability agenda, and our renewable and energy efficiency programs are vital in supporting this pillar.  We in the Jollibee Group, along with our partners and stakeholders, will continue taking proactive steps towards a more sustainable future," added Miñana.

Jollibee Group Partners with PBEd, USAID to Provide Jobs to Filipino Youth

Jollibee Group Partners with PBEd, USAID to Provide Jobs to Filipino Youth

MANILA, Philippines. – Unemployment remains an issue to many underprivileged Filipino youth, especially during a challenging economic climate. Most of them have lost their jobs or failed to secure stable jobs due to the impacts of the pandemic. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), youth unemployment rate in the Philippines as of May 2023 is at 10.6%.

To help address youth unemployment, the Jollibee Group, and its social development arm Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) recently partnered with the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) and Career Builder Skills Training and Assessment Center on the YouthWorks PH project.

Launched in 2018, YouthWorks PH is a private sector-led initiative which aims to increase access of unemployed and out-of-school Filipino youth to quality training and employment opportunities. This project is implemented by PBEd in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

PBEd is the business community's response to the need for sustained and strategic education reform in the Philippines. Career Builder Skills Training and Assessment Center is a TESDA accredited skills training and assessment center established in 2020 to help provide employment opportunities to unemployed Filipinos through skills training.

For its part, the Jollibee Group will co-develop the technical-vocational school-based curriculum with Career Builders, in coordination with Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). JGF will also provide scholarship assistance to youth scholars and provide them with practicum training in select JFC stores. A pilot training program will be done this year to optimize the design and mechanics that can be used to scale to more youth trainees across the country beginning 2024.

“We are happy to partner with PBEd, USAID, TESDA, and Career Builder on providing the marginalized youth sector with the opportunity to empower themselves with technical and leadership skills. This initiative will enable them not only to find jobs, but also to unlock their potential so they can achieve a better life for themselves and their families,” said Jollibee Group Foundation President Gisela Tiongson.

Sustained program for youth employment

This is not the first time JGF has undertaken an initiative for the marginalized youth sector. In 2005, JGF launched the Access, Curriculum, and Employability or ACE Scholarship Program, which provides two types of educational support to underprivileged youth: college scholarships for degrees in Hotel and Restaurant Management or Business Management, and technical skills training scholarships, in partnership with Don Bosco Technical College.

In 2018, JGF partnered with the Anihan Technical School for the development of the Quick Service Restaurant Operations course, which includes both in-school and in-store training for scholars, improving not only their skills set, but also their employability in the food service industry.

Since the ACE Scholarship Program started in 2004, JGF has given scholarships to 2,397 students, which includes 1,117 students for agriculture and 139 for technical-vocational skills training.

“We continue to work towards reducing barriers to education for the marginalized Filipino youth. With new partners like PBEd and USAID, we are strengthening our ACE Scholarship Program even further and helping provide more young people with better chances at succeeding in life and improving their quality of life,” said Tiongson.

By the end of 2022, Jollibee Group manufacturing sites in the Philippines achieved 21% reduction in energy use ratio, 23% reduction in water use ratio, and 38% reduction of waste, with almost 50% of waste now being recycled versus the company’s 2020 benchmarks. On the store level, each solar panel installed reduces about 3-7% of consumption form the grid.

Progress over perfection

“We understand that assessing our impact is a continuous process of ambition and refinement. We will track the success of our strategies over the coming years, and periodically review our material topics and stakeholder engagement process. We will set agile goals and targets to help us significantly impact society and the environment in more meaningful ways,” Tanmantiong said.

Apart from establishing a unit dedicated to sustainability and the appointment of a Chief Sustainability Officer as part of its Executive Team, Jollibee Group also instituted an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Council to ensure that its business operations are aligned with the sustainability goals.

“Our Global Sustainability Agenda represents our belief system in conducting business more ethically. As a global food company, we are responsible and deliberate with our actions and their impact, and we are making our sustainability measures the way of the future,” added Miñana.
