BPI, ACEN Seal Three-Year Partnership to Empower more Filipinos with Financial Knowledge

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) continues to advance financial inclusion by strengthening financial literacy, particularly among underserved communities.

Through its social development arm, BPI Foundation (BPIF), and Ayala Group’s renewable energy company ACEN, BPI will bring financial education programs to communities near ACEN’s project sites across Real, Quezon; Pakil, Pangil, and Paete, Laguna; and San Marcelino, Subic, Castillejos, Palauig, Iba and Botolan, Zambales.

The program aims to reach 3,000 direct beneficiaries across communities.

The initiative will be implemented through BPI’s flagship financial education program, FinEd Unboxed, which equips participants with essential financial knowledge through structured and practical learning modules covering saving, budgeting, credit management, investing, insurance, retirement planning, and fraud prevention. The program combines capacity-building sessions with interactive learning tools, including the Breakthrough App, a digital financial education platform that enables participants to apply key money management concepts in real-life scenarios. The program will also focus on empowering local community leaders to become effective financial literacy advocates who can cascade financial knowledge within their communities.

This program aims to address gaps in financial literacy and resilience among Filipino adults. While financial knowledge is improving—with 74% of adults correctly answering basic financial questions in 2025, up from 69% in 2021—challenges remain. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported that only 43% report being satisfied with their financial situation, and just three in ten have enough savings to withstand financial shocks, underscoring the continued need for accessible and practical financial education.

“At BPI Foundation, we believe that financial education is not a privilege—it is a foundation for opportunity and progress,” said Carmina Marquez, BPIF Executive Director. “Through our collaboration with ACEN, we are expanding access to financial literacy in communities that need it most, empowering more Filipinos to build better financial habits, pursue their aspirations, and contribute to a more inclusive and resilient Philippines.”

In 2025, BPIF’s financial education initiatives reached 3.3 million Filipinos in local communities nationwide, including financial literacy sessions with ACEN that equipped 334 participants from Laguna, Quezon and Zambales with practical knowledge on saving.

Beneficiaries were also provided with practical knowledge about insurance, debt management, investing, and protecting themselves from scams and fraud. Facilitated by BPI employee volunteers, the sessions provided participants with essential tools to make informed financial decisions and build a more secure financial future.

“As we expand renewable energy projects across the country, we recognize that creating positive impact goes beyond providing clean power. It also means helping build resilient and empowered communities around our project sites,” said Gabby Mejia, ACEN Executive Director. “Through this partnership with BPI Foundation, we are equipping families and community leaders with practical financial skills that can help them better manage their resources, prepare for future opportunities, and strengthen their long-term economic well-being. We see financial literacy as an important complement to our efforts to deliver sustainable development in the communities we serve.”

BPIF and ACEN’s partnership highlights the strong synergy within the Ayala Group in advancing sustainability goals and reaching underserved and indigenous communities.

Drew, Iya Arellano and Kids are BPI AIA’s Newest Brand Ambassadors

MAKATI CITY, Philippines, June 24, 2025 – BPI AIA Life Assurance Corporation (BPI AIA), the strategic alliance between Bank of the Philippine Islands and AIA Philippines, proudly introduces Drew Arellano and Iya Villania, along with their five children, as its official brand ambassadors. This announcement coincides with the launch of BPI AIA’s “Rethink Healthy” campaign, a health and wellness campaign that aims to change the way people view and approach health.

Well-loved for their active lifestyle, strong family values, and mindful approach to life, the Arellanos embody what it means to live a healthy and well-rounded life. For them, health goes beyond physical—it is about achieving balance and peace of mind across every aspect of life, from mind and body to finances. Their partnership with BPI AIA reinforces the brand’s mission to make holistic wellness a reality for every Filipino household.

“BPI AIA is proud to welcome the Arellano family to help us inspire more Filipinos to ‘Rethink Healthy’ not just as a goal, but as a way of life,” says Karen Custodia, CEO of BPI AIA. “Their authenticity and commitment to overall well-being perfectly mirror our values.”

“It brings us so much excitement to partner with BPI AIA because their mission to help families live healthier, longer, better lives align perfectly with our journey as a family,” shares Iya. “Health isn’t just about workouts or diet plans. It’s about peace of mind, security, and the little daily choices that help us feel whole.”

Redefining ‘healthy’ with BPI AIA
According to AIA Philippines’ 2025 “Rethink Healthy” research study, Filipinos still primarily define “being healthy” as having a healthy body (52%), followed by a healthy mind (30%), healthy finances (12%), and a healthy environment (7%). The same study shows that 59% of Filipinos consider money worries as the top cause of stress, while 80% have a family history of illnesses, most commonly diabetes (32%), heart disease (30%), and obesity (21%).

In response, BPI AIA’s campaign echoes the global “Rethink Healthy” movement by promoting a more inclusive, flexible, and practical approach to well-being, one that embraces physical, mental, financial, and environmental health. It encourages families to strengthen their foundations through simple, sustainable habits and smart planning.

With the Arellanos on board, BPI AIA aims to show that healthy habits do not require perfection, only consistency and intention. From staying active and mindful to making smart financial choices, Drew, Iya, and their five children bring the “Rethink Healthy” mindset to life in a way that feels real, doable, and relatable.

“For us, healthy means balance, physically, emotionally, and financially,” says Drew. “It’s about making mindful choices every day, whether it’s staying active, eating nutritious meals, or securing our family’s future through smart planning. Our top priority is ensuring our kids grow up in a stable and thriving environment.”

Making holistic health a family affair
The Arellanos know that staying healthy requires creativity, commitment, and teamwork. For them, wellness is a family affair. They stay active by incorporating movement into daily routines, such as playing tag with the kids, going on bike rides on weekends, or doing quick home workouts while the kids nap or play. “You just need to move. Make it fun and consistent, even for a few minutes daily,” Drew says.

For Iya, self-care is as vital as parenting. Despite a busy schedule, she makes time for short walks, quiet prayer, or screen-free moments with their children. “Whether it’s cooking together, limiting screen time, or sticking to bedtime routines, these small habits create a culture of wellness at home,” she explains.

Financial health also plays a critical role in their overall well-being. Raising five kids means planning ahead, building emergency savings, investing in education, and securing life and health insurance through BPI AIA.

“We want to provide the best future for our kids,” Iya says. “That means teaching them about money, building good habits, and protecting their dreams with the right tools.” Drew adds, “Partnering with BPI AIA gives us confidence about the future. It’s about finding what works for your family, whether that’s a meal plan, a budget, or a weekend bike ride.”

With the Arellanos leading the charge, BPI AIA is showing that health and happiness start at home. Even the smallest choices, like drinking water, sticking to bedtime, or talking about money, can shape a stronger, healthier future.

Whether you’re just starting your health journey or looking to protect your family’s future, BPI AIA invites every Filipino to take that first step, no matter how small.

Keep the FLAMES Burning this Valentine’s Day and Protect Yourself from Scammers

Remember the FLAMES—Friends, Lovers, Anger, Marriage, Engagement (Enemy for some), Soulmates—game in the 90’s? It was a popular pen and paper pastime among young teens. They would name their ‘crush’ and be able to ‘predict’ their future by playing with the letters that make up the name.

Fast forward to this day and age, “FLAMES” can guide adults and teens alike. But this time on a more serious note.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) presents a ‘FLAMES’ way—of protecting against scammers.

“No one can really predict when and how a scammer attacks. We must always be careful not to fall for their schemes,” said BPI Enterprise Information Security Officer and Data Protection Officer Jonathan John B. Paz.

BPI’s ‘FLAMES’ reminder consists of simple cybersecurity tips that account holders can do to keep their accounts safe and secure especially this Valentine’s Day:

  • F-riends? Family? It is better to keep confidential details like your PINs and passwords a secret (even) from them.

  • L-ove to share your latest updates online? This is okay but be sure to set boundaries. Avoid oversharing, especially on social media, for your and your loved ones’ safety.

  • A-nger, excitement, and curiosity are some of the most common emotional trigger's scammers latch on to for their social engineering scams. Too much of these feelings can also be used as bait to manipulate you.

  • M-arriage between online and offline cybersecurity practices is a good habit to develop. It is not enough to be careful with your actions online only but not offline, and vice-versa.

  • E-ngage only with trusted accounts. When planning to use e-commerce, do background checks first and read reviews about the sellers or product. Legitimate Facebook pages have the blue verified badges on them.

  • S-oulmate? One-True Pair. Just like them, take care of your One-Time PINs (OTPs) as well by never sharing them with anyone.

917Ventures’ Fundspace Offers Philippine MSMEs Grappling with Credit and Funding Issues New Seamless Digital-Based Solution

Manila, Philippines, 30 January 2024–  As fund sufficiency remains a major challenge for MSMEs, particularly in emerging markets, 917Ventures’s loan aggregator Fundspace is offering

MSMEs and local entrepreneurs a swift, user-friendly, and easily accessible digital solution to bridge the financing gap in the Philippines.

“No one can deny the outsized impact of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). According to the United Nations Development Programme, these businesses contribute 40% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and employ 63% of the local workforce. Despite their substantial contributions, many MSMEs continue to be underfunded. This hinders the growth of these businesses, and in turn may hinder the growth of the economy,” said Martin Luchangco, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at 917Ventures.

Straightforward Application Process
FundSpace caters to enterprises of all sizes, ensuring easy access to the funding to ensure business growth and sustainability. It connects borrowers to different lending partners offering various loan products through an accessible mobile-friendly platform.

Entrepreneurs can start their financing journey in four simple steps:

  1. Visit the FundSpace website

  2. Specify the loan amount

  3. Submit necessary business documents (such as Barangay and Mayor’s Permits, DTI Permits, valid IDs, and the latest three months bank statements), and;

  4. Wait for its dedicated account managers to get in touch.

    1. The platform has a quick 14-day loan approval timeline, a significant improvement over the typical 60-day timeline seen in traditional banks.

Together with its lender partners that include Alon Capital, iGlobal, Mt Fuji Lending, BPI Business Banking, First Circle, Zenith Capital, and Esquire, FundSpace provides loans from P5,000 to upwards of P100 million.

“It’s important to provide flexible loan amounts to better serve MSMEs across the board–from those who are just starting out, to those who want to aggressively grow their businesses,” Luchangco explained.

Since launch, FundSpace has facilitated loans across multiple businesses, including industries like retail, construction, food and beverage, services, and software industries, underscoring its position as a valuable partner of MSMEs, helping propel them toward sustainable growth and success.

Inclusive Access to All Types of Businesses

Data from the United Nations Development Program showed that more than half of MSMEs (67%) in the Philippines face challenges when it comes to securing funding.

Many of these entrepreneurs rely on personal savings or loans from family and friends to start or expand their businesses, as banks and other financial institutions often subject entrepreneurs to a lengthy, tedious process, demanding extensive documentation. Rigid collateral requirements and high-interest rates pose additional barriers, limiting the accessibility of crucial financial resources and cost of business for these enterprises.

In response to these challenges, FundSpace was developed to simplify the borrowing process.

Features to look forward to

Beyond continuing to expand its loan offerings, FundSpace plans to launch a credit scoring feature later in the year. This feature is designed to streamline the application process for borrowers by reducing the required documentation. Simultaneously, for lenders, it will facilitate quicker assessments and enable the platform to deliver higher-quality leads.

FundSpace's commitment to innovation not only enhances the user experience for borrowers but also strengthens the efficiency and effectiveness of the lending process for its valued network of financial partners.

"Empowering MSMEs with easy financial solutions is both an investment in their growth and in fostering economic resilience. By removing financial barriers for these enterprises we are contributing not only to their success but also to the sustainable development of communities and the Philippine economy,” Luchangco added.
