Security Bank Economic Forum 2025: Navigating Tariffs, trade, and ASEAN’s Next Moves

Makati, Philippines, October 16, 2025—Now in its 15th year, the Security Bank Economic Forum continues to be a premier platform for business and investors to understand trends driving growth and opportunity across ASEAN. This year’s theme, “Trump, trade, and the impact on ASEAN,” zeroes in on how shifting US trade and tariff policies are reshaping the region’s economic outlook and influencing strategies for resilience and growth.
“Global shifts—from US trade policies to geopolitical tensions—continue to reshape the flow of goods, capital, and talent. For Philippine businesses, these translate into real challenges such as supply chain disruptions and investment uncertainties,” said Cirilo P. Noel, Security Bank Chairman.  “At Security Bank, our BetterBanking promise means going beyond financial services to empower clients with insights that help them navigate complexity, adapt with resilience, and seize opportunities,” he added.
The forum featured thought leaders offering timely perspectives on the evolving global landscape.
Curtis S. Chin, former U.S. Ambassador to the Asian Development Bank and Senior Advisor for Global Markets at the Milken Institute, explored how US trade and tariff policies under President Donald Trump are influencing ASEAN economies, and redefining partnerships.
“As geopolitical tensions rise, businesses must understand both the risks and opportunities of this new era. Tariffs and trade are not just economic issues—they shape the future of cooperation and competition in the region,” said Chin. “However, we should never forget that progress in any nation is ultimately up to its own leaders, its own citizens, its own businesses, its own communities, its civil society. Whoever is president of the United States or any other outside nation should be no excuse for not moving forward.”
Dr. Cielito F. Habito, former Socioeconomic Planning Secretary, unpacked the implications of shifting global policies on the Philippine economy—emphasizing strategies for resilience and inclusive growth.
“Many see opportunities for the Philippines along with the clear threats from tectonic shifts in the global financial and economic landscape, but in the end, we could well be our own worst enemy in navigating through all the changes happening,” Dr. Habito said. “We need fundamental policy and institutional reforms to avoid the real threats to the nation’s future arising from self-inflicted weaknesses, especially in our most basic assets: our people and our land.”
“Uncertainty is not an excuse to stand still. It’s a call for clarity, agility, and purpose.,” said Sanjiv Vohra, Security Bank President and CEO. “Forums like this embody our BetterBanking promise—bringing together ideas, connections, and strategies that help clients thrive amid change.”
The 15th Security Bank Economic Forum reaffirms the Bank’s commitment to fostering dialogue that drives informed decision-making. By convening global and local experts, the Bank continues to provide actionable insights that equip businesses to navigate volatility with confidence and purpose.

What is an MSCI ESG Rating and Why Security Bank’s ‘A' Matters

ESG ratings have become a key benchmark for investors, regulators, and customers to evaluate how well companies manage long-term environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks. Among these standards, the MSCI ESG Rating is one of the most widely recognized globally—used by asset managers and analysts to assess companies’ resilience to issues like climate change, labor practices, and corporate ethics.

What is an MSCI ESG rating?
MSCI ESG Ratings aim to measure a company's resilience to long-term ESG risks. Companies are scored on a scale ranging from AAA (leader) to CCC (laggard), relative to industry peers. Ratings are based on a company’s exposure to ESG risks and its ability to manage those risks effectively. MSCI assesses multiple factors, including:
- Environmental: Exposure to carbon-intensive sectors, environmental policies, and resource efficiency
- Social: Labor practices, customer protection, product safety, and community impact
- Governance: Board independence, shareholder rights, and transparency in management practices

A higher rating signals to investors that the company is well-positioned to manage ESG challenges and seize opportunities in a changing business environment.

Why Security Bank’s ‘A’ rating stands out
Recently, MSCI upgraded Security Bank (PSE:SECB) to an ‘A’ rating, making it the only Philippine bank to hold this score today. This positions the Bank on par with leading banks in the Asia-Pacific region for ESG risk management.

MSCI cited the following as key drivers of the upgrade:
- Enhanced corporate governance: Stronger Board oversight, improved transparency, and better executive accountability practices
- Leadership in consumer protection: Top-tier performance in complaint resolution and customer data protection
- Robust cybersecurity measures: Strong controls around encryption, access management, and information security standards
- Refined ESG risk oversight in lending: Updated sustainability framework to moderate exposure to environmentally intensive sectors

“Being the only Philippine bank with an MSCI ESG ‘A’ rating is a clear signal that our governance, risk management, and sustainability practices are helping us realize our vision to be the best-in-class in sustainable banking,” said Sanjiv Vohra, President and CEO of Security Bank. “An MSCI ‘A’ rating is not just a badge—it’s a sign that we are managing ESG risks as effectively as the best in our industry.

Why it matters for customers and investors
For customers, an MSCI ‘A’ rating means the Bank is building systems and safeguards that protect their interests and the environment over the long term. For investors, it signals resilience and strategic foresight in navigating regulatory, environmental, and societal shifts.

The MSCI upgrade is one of several advancements in the Bank’s sustainability agenda this year. In May, the Bank became the first Philippine bank to join the Alliance for Green Commercial Banks, a global initiative spearheaded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to accelerate sustainable banking practices.

Additionally, the Bank partnered with IFC to expand its green financing portfolio and strengthen its institutional sustainability framework—enabling greater support for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate-resilient projects.

These developments, combined with the MSCI ESG ‘A’ rating, reinforce Security Bank’s position as a forward-looking organization committed to building a sustainable and inclusive economy.

GCash Highlights Role of National ID in Enabling Inclusive, Secure Finance at BSP Forum

A trusted digital identity system lays the foundation for true financial inclusion, helping ensure that every Filipino, regardless of their background or circumstances, can access essential financial services with confidence.

This was the central message at the recent Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Forum on Digital Identity, where GCash, the country's leading finance finance super app and largest cashless ecosystem, shared how its integration with the National ID eVerify Authentication Service (NIDAS) is making identity verification easier, more accessible, and more inclusive to help more Filipinos, especially those with limited access to traditional IDs, open an account.

Held at the BSP Assembly Hall, the forum brought together leaders from government, financial institutions, and the tech sector to examine how digital identity can support more secure and inclusive financial systems. Guided by the theme “Building Trust and Synergy in Digital Identity for an Inclusive and Secure Financial System,” the discussions emphasized the need for collaboration, innovation, and user-centric solutions that address real-world access challenges.

Representing GCash was Joanne Avendaño, vice president and head of customer experience management, who shared the company’s experience as the first and only Electronic Money Issuer integrated with NIDAS. This enables GCash users to validate their identity using their National ID in real-time, eliminating the need for multiple traditional IDs, which many Filipinos today still lack. This approach has helped reduce drop-offs during onboarding and has improved the success rate of account creation, especially among underserved groups. Most importantly, it has helped streamline onboarding for a broader range of users.

“Our partnership with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has always been more than just ID acceptance. It’s a shared commitment to make sure that no Filipino is left behind in the digital economy,” said Avendaño. “By enabling real-time National ID validation and bringing services on-ground, we’re helping more Filipinos complete their verification journey with ease and confidence,” Avendaño added.

The forum also featured insights from the National Privacy Commission, World Bank, Korea Credit Information Services, and several units within the BSP. Topics ranged from data governance and consumer protection to practical implementation challenges and international benchmarks.

Avendaño joined fellow panelists from Asia United Bank, Seabank Philippines, Maya Philippines, and the Bankers Association of the Philippines in discussing the value of coordinated efforts, shared learnings, and responsible use of digital identity systems in strengthening public trust.

Beyond app integration, GCash has also worked with the PSA and local government units (LGUs) to support on-ground National ID registration and account onboarding events, which were held in schools, barangays, and underserved communities across the country. This approach brings both digital identity and financial access closer to Filipinos who need it most.

With digital ID adoption gaining momentum, GCash’s role as an early adopter highlights the importance of responsible integration, cross-sector collaboration, and community engagement in building a more accessible and inclusive financial ecosystem.

A Smarter Way to Bank

Makati, Philippines— MSMEs make up 99.5% of all businesses in the Philippines and employ over 60% of the country’s workforce—yet they continue to face systemic barriers to growth, from limited access to credit to persistent cash flow issues and administrative hurdles. Recognizing their critical role in driving inclusive economic development, Security Bank is addressing these gaps with customer-centric solutions tailored to the day-to-day realities of Filipino entrepreneurs.
Through its Business Banking Segment (BBS), launched in 2022, Security Bank offers tailored financing, multi-channel access, and expert support for MSMEs nationwide. Backed by strong investments in platforms, partnerships, and talent, the Bank is making business banking more responsive and intuitive.
This focused approach is driving strong growth: as of March 2025, MSME loans under BBS reached PHP 21 billion, up 50% from PHP 14 billion the previous year.
“We’re committed to making banking simpler and more intuitive for entrepreneurs,” said John David Yap, EVP and Head of the Business Banking Segment. “By removing friction from everyday transactions and offering proactive guidance, we help MSMEs focus on what matters most: growing their business.”

Smart, convenient tools for modern businesses

Security Bank’s DigiBanker platform gives MSMEs a centralized system for payroll, tax remittances, supplier payments, and receivables management—cutting down manual tasks and improving operational visibility. For business owners, this means faster access to credit, fewer documentation hassles, and more time to run their operations.
“Security Bank has proven to be a reliable partner, offering competitive interest rates, accessible payment plans, and convenient digital banking services that allow us to monitor our transactions in real-time,” said Katherine Ann Karaca, President of Rider’s Pit Stop Philippines Incorporated, a wholesaler and retailer of motorcycle parts and accessories. “Location-wise, it’s excellent. Wherever we expand, there’s a Security Bank nearby, making it easy to deposit our daily sales. Thanks to Security Bank’s support, we closed the year with 27 Rider’s Pit Shop branches: 22 in Cebu, two in Tagbilaran, Bohol, and three in Dumaguete.”
As part of its commitment to continuously enhance its platforms and improve service for entrepreneurs, the Bank will soon launch a new MSME-dedicated app—building on the capabilities of DigiBanker to offer faster, more intuitive access to banking.

More than financing: Holistic business support

To address deeper operational challenges, Security Bank developed the Business Elite Program—offering preferential rates, waived fees, data-driven insights, and a dedicated Relationship Manager for qualified MSMEs. It goes beyond banking by combining financial tools with business support services.

“We developed the Business Elite Program with a clear focus on the needs of our high-value MSME clients to provide them with the right mix of financial and operational tools to support their growth,” Yap explained.

Through its Beyond Banking network, the Bank also connects MSMEs with expert partners like Empleyado (HR/payroll), FilePino (registration), SYCARDA (analytics), Taxumo and Juan Accounting (tax filing), Ninja Van (logistics) and MyLegalWhiz (legal support). MSMEs also benefit from non-life insurance coverage via PhilBritish Insurance, which includes property, liability, theft, fraud, and 24/7 telemedicine protection for businesses under the Business Elite program.

A long-term partner for business growth
`
“Ever since we started doing business with Security Bank, they are able to continuously give us information that we need and almost all the time, they are a call away from us,” said Martin Allen del Mundo, Acting OIC and current successor of Ared Enterprises, manufacturers of Porky Best Chicharon. They have been a Security Bank client since 2017. Del Mundo got a Business Mortgage Loan to expand their manufacturing center—allowing their products to be in more stores in Davao and Metro Manila.
“As business owners we understand how important capital plays in the business. And because of Security Bank, we were able to get that capital and be able to have good interest rates and good payment terms that did not hinder us from continuing to grow the business,” he added.

Looking ahead, Security Bank is committed to expanding its ecosystem to meet the evolving needs of MSMEs. By creating a seamless, end-to-end experience that goes beyond traditional banking, the Bank aims to be the long-term growth partner for Filipino entrepreneurs at every stage of their business journey.

BSP and ATRAM Expand PERA Digital Access with GCash Support

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) enables more Filipinos to easily sign up for the government’s voluntary retirement savings program called Personal Equity and Retirement Account (PERA), with its integration to the Open Finance Pilot in the Philippines.

The voluntary retirement savings plan offers tax perks, investment options, and long-term financial security for account holders. It is designed to allow local contributors to invest up to P200,000 per year (P400,000 for Overseas Filipino Workers) and enjoy a 5% income tax credit on these contributions, with their investments growing tax-free until retirement.

As part of the first phase of BSP’s Open Finance pilot, several financial institutions have come together to explore more inclusive ways of improving the PERA account opening process. Among initial participants are PERA Administrator ATRAM and e-wallet platform GCash, whose strong collaboration is paving the way for a more accessible PERA onboarding experience.

Fully verified GCash users can now open a PERA account more quickly and easily by consenting to share their information with the PERA Administrator. ATRAM, a leading independent asset and wealth manager in the country, is the first participating administrator for the pilot program.

In the past, those interested in creating their own PERA had to complete a lengthy account opening process with manual paperwork requirements.

Keep the FLAMES Burning this Valentine’s Day and Protect Yourself from Scammers

Remember the FLAMES—Friends, Lovers, Anger, Marriage, Engagement (Enemy for some), Soulmates—game in the 90’s? It was a popular pen and paper pastime among young teens. They would name their ‘crush’ and be able to ‘predict’ their future by playing with the letters that make up the name.

Fast forward to this day and age, “FLAMES” can guide adults and teens alike. But this time on a more serious note.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) presents a ‘FLAMES’ way—of protecting against scammers.

“No one can really predict when and how a scammer attacks. We must always be careful not to fall for their schemes,” said BPI Enterprise Information Security Officer and Data Protection Officer Jonathan John B. Paz.

BPI’s ‘FLAMES’ reminder consists of simple cybersecurity tips that account holders can do to keep their accounts safe and secure especially this Valentine’s Day:

  • F-riends? Family? It is better to keep confidential details like your PINs and passwords a secret (even) from them.

  • L-ove to share your latest updates online? This is okay but be sure to set boundaries. Avoid oversharing, especially on social media, for your and your loved ones’ safety.

  • A-nger, excitement, and curiosity are some of the most common emotional trigger's scammers latch on to for their social engineering scams. Too much of these feelings can also be used as bait to manipulate you.

  • M-arriage between online and offline cybersecurity practices is a good habit to develop. It is not enough to be careful with your actions online only but not offline, and vice-versa.

  • E-ngage only with trusted accounts. When planning to use e-commerce, do background checks first and read reviews about the sellers or product. Legitimate Facebook pages have the blue verified badges on them.

  • S-oulmate? One-True Pair. Just like them, take care of your One-Time PINs (OTPs) as well by never sharing them with anyone.
