Farming Futures

While modern agricultural techniques boost yields for some, there remains a number of Filipino farmers who struggle to keep pace. These experienced hands find themselves falling behind in a market demanding higher production, clinging to familiar yet often inefficient methods passed down through generations.

One farmer from Pampanga, Jayson Garcia, sought to disrupt this prevailing narrative in his family. He knew that he had to chart a new course forward for his farm and innovate to remain competitive within the rapidly evolving landscape of modern agriculture.

“Noon, mahirap ang magtanim,” he recalled their life before joining SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan. “Para bang tsambahan, basta pag itinanim mo ‘yan, hintayin mo na lang mamunga. Mas mahirap pa lalo kapag nagkaroon ng kalamidad,” he added.

SM Foundation’s training program focused on high-value crop cultivation was the breakthrough Garcia needed to revitalize his farming techniques. These included selecting the best seeds and caring for them as well as strategic planting schedules.

Jayson attends the SM City Clark’s Weekend Market to observe best practices and gain insights into new agricultural techniques.

The livelihood program also gave way for him to discover alternative sales channels that enhanced his earning potential while extending fair prices to his customers. The knowledge and confidence he gained led him to expand his farm, and in effect, increased his monthly income to more than Php25,000.

Aside from directly selling his harvests, he is now planting a variety of vegetables–on his farm, including lemongrass, malunggay, and madre de cacao, which he sells online to small businesses that process the produce into other products.

Embracing new techniques

Sharing the same story of hope is another KSK farmer from Pampanga, Juanito Dela Cruz. Despite his age, he actively pursued and adopted modern farming techniques. Building on his current success, he shared the importance of adaptability for farmers, calling for others to try and explore new practices.

From a modest monthly income of Php10,000, Juanito experienced an upsurge in his earnings, notably through participation in the Weekend Market at SM City Clark, yielding around Php30,000 weekly. “Kailangan maging bukas tayo sa makabagong pamamaraan ng pagsasaka para makahabol tayo sa demands ng panahon ngayon—ito ang itinuo sa akin ng SM Foundation-KSK,” he said.

Juanito, alongside his wife, actively participates in the SM City Clark Weekend Market. They credit the market with contributing to their increased profitability.

The SM Group’s KSK program has changed the lives of roughly 30,000 Filipino farmers, including Jayson and Juanito. Through its initiatives, farmers who once lost hope have been able to embrace modern farming techniques, leading to adaptability in the face of the evolving agricultural landscape.

The SM Group, through SM Foundation, remains steadfast in its commitment to spreading social good. This dedication extends to SM’s forthcoming endeavors to be led by its future smart city property development – with focus on enhancing positive social impact in the communities where SM operates.

Freedom March Rekindles the Spirit of ‘Bayanihan’ as it Commemorates Fallen heroes of Bataan

FREEDOM MARCH

In the early hours of March 16, 2024, hundreds of members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), civic group representatives, descendants of World War II veterans, and various community members, gathered at the historic Kilometer Zero in Mariveles, Bataan, to embark on the poignant 160-km Freedom March.

This momentous event, organized by the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) in collaboration with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) and the Department of National Defense (DND), is a profound act of remembrance and honor, marking the 82nd anniversary of the Fall of Bataan.

The Freedom March, resuming after a hiatus, traces the actual route of the infamous Bataan Death March in 1942 and culminates at the Capas National Shrine in Tarlac. It commemorates the courage and sacrifice of World War II's Filipino and American heroes and serves as a solemn tribute to their enduring spirit.

VETERANS BANK FREEDOM MARCH

"Eighty-two years later, we return to these hallowed grounds, not as witnesses to the sorrow and pain, but as bearers of remembrance and respect. Those WWII veterans went beyond the call of duty defending or country despite their vintage weapons and limited ammunition. They fought starvation, sickness and a well armed enemy. As they marched, they still did not think of their own, but thought about their comrades. Our presence here today honors those heores. We walk this path to relive history, not to reopen old wounds, but to ensure that their example lives on and is passed on to the next generation." said Mike Villa-Real, PVB first vice president for marketing and communications.

Participants, spanning generations and backgrounds, are offered a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of heroes, engaging in a powerful educational experience that deeply connects them with this pivotal moment in history.

FREEDOM MARCH CAPAS TARLAC

The Freedom March covers the route taken by approximately 76,000 POWs, transforming each step into a personal encounter with the past, and reinforcing the narratives of endurance and resilience that are foundational to our heritage.

The 2024 Freedom March extends an open invitation to the public, encouraging everyone— students, families, and local communities—to join in this moving tribute. The arduous walk can be made lighter with offerings of food, water, and encouragement from passersby.

Decades ago, residents risked their own safety by throwing food and water to the starving soldiers passing by their houses.

FREEDOM MARCH JAPANESE SOLDIERS

This display not only shows the kindness of Filipinos towards strangers but also illustrates how humanity can shine even in the darkest times. Walking under the heat of the sun is no mean feat, yet this reenactment serves as a small, symbolic sacrifice compared to the unimaginable horrors our fallen heroes endured.

Through these acts of communal support, participants and onlookers alike breathe life into the timeless spirit of ‘bayanihan,’ demonstrating a collective memory and unwavering respect for the past.

FREEDOM MARCH GUEST

As we come together to retrace these historic steps, we reaffirm our commitment to remembering the lessons of history, ensuring that the bravery, suffering, and ultimate sacrifice of those who came before us are never forgotten but honored and learned from, generation after generation.

At each Freedom March, we do more than remember; we pledge to uphold the values, courage, and spirit of those who walked before us, ensuring their legacy endures for generations to come.

PLDT Group Expands Mental Health Awareness to Indigenous Communities

PLDT Porac

Pastor Benny Capuno, a tribal leader in Porac, Pampanga, knows all too well the great distress his Ayta community goes through when an earthquake strikes. In April 2019, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake devastated Porac, affecting hundreds and killing 10, five of whom were from the Ayta community. For Capuno, it reminded him and the community of the fragility of life, especially as when the same town was devastated by the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption. It also reminded him of the mental well-being of those who survived.

So when the community partnered with PLDT and Smart, they co-developed a Psychological First Aid Program that catered to the mental health needs of the community. According to Capuno, the Psychological First Aid Training enhanced the awareness of the community to better address future psychological needs.

Capuno serves as a mamuun or tribal leader of the Indigenous People’s Political Structures in CADT 123 or the ancestral domain of the Ayta MagIndi and Ayta MagAntsi in Porac, Pampanga.

“Malaking pasalamat namin kasi natuto kami na kami mismo meron pala kaming kakayanan. Natuto kami kung paano makinig, ‘yung paano namin labanan ‘yung nagaganap at tsaka natutunan namin kung ano ‘yung kahulugan ng mga nagaganap [sa amin] at paano namin mapagtagumpayan at mas mapalakas pa. Natuto kami sa parte na iyon at kami mismo, kaya naming lagpasan ang mga ganitong sitwasyon,” Capuno said. (We are really grateful because we learned that we also have the capacity [to address the mental health needs of our community]. [Through the training] we learned how to listen. We learned that we can fight the difficult things that are happening to us. We learned to understand the meaning of what is happening around us and how we can overcome and strengthen these. We learned in those aspects, and we now we know that we, ourselves, can overcome these situations.)

“‘Yun ang doon sa mga pangyayaring pagkaba, takot, at ‘yung kamalayan ay natutunan namin – bagong kamalayan sa amin. Masaya kami dahil natutunan namin ‘yung akala namin ‘yung pag-aaral ng kalusugang pang-sikolohikal ay natutunan namin na akala namin, hindi puwede sa amin. Pero ngayon pala, puwedeng puwede. At kami mismo pala ay puwedeng makapagsagawa ng ganoon,” Capuno added. (Those situations [where we experience] nervousness [and] fear, we learned some awareness – it was a new awareness for us. We are very happy because we are open to learning new awareness and that we learned more about the psychological health care because we thought it was something that we cannot learn ourselves, but then, we learned how it’s possible. That it is possible for us to do it and it is possible for us to implement this kind of initiative.)

Promoting mental health strength as fundamental to digital wellness is a key part of PLDT and Smart’s continuing commitment to help the Philippines contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) #3 that stands for good health and well-being.

DTI Secretary Pascual Distributes Assistance to Small Businesses in Samar and Pampanga

DTI-OSEC-Public Relations Unit News Release for Monday, July 17, 2023

On 17 July 2023, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. together with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Fred Pascual led the opening of the Kadiwa ng Pangulo Caravan and the distribution of financial assistance for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the province of Pampanga. As part of the program, President Marcos witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) by different government agencies to expand the Kadiwa ng Pangulo in various Local Government Units (LGUs).

The Kadiwa ng Pangulo aims to provide high-quality and affordable agricultural products to Filipino consumers. Meanwhile, the distribution of financial assistance aims to aid small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, calamities, and disasters to help them recover and restart their businesses.

The said MOA was signed by different government agencies that were part of the Kadiwa ng Pangulo namely: Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Presidential Communications Office (PCO), and Presidential Management Staff (PMS).

Following the Kadiwa ng Pangulo conducted in Catarman, Samar last 14 July 2023, the simultaneous opening of Kadiwa Caravans only shows the administration's unwavering commitment to ensure every Filipino's access to affordable goods.

Aside from this, the Kadiwa is instrumental in expanding the market reach of products and services produced by MSMEs that are also supported by the DTI. Through this program, MSMEs were given spaces or booths where they can sell their products.

Together with President Marcos Jr., Secretary Pascual expressed strong support and cooperation of the DTI in expanding the Kadiwa ng Pangulo in different areas of the country. Kadiwa is also an important aspect in pursuit of the goal of attaining food security.

Through the Kadiwa ng Pangulo in Catarman, the DTI distributed assistance to four (4) beneficiaries of the RISE UP Micro Multi-Purpose Loan Program which received PHP 300,000 each. The DTI also provided financial assistance to one (1) beneficiary of the Wholesale Microfinance Program amounting to PHP 3,500,000. “As part of our mandate to ensure every Filipino's access to affordable and high-quality basic necessities and prime commodities, we at DTI will continue to work collaboratively with different government agencies to strengthen and expand the Kadiwa ng Pangulo. I express my deepest gratitude to President Marcos Jr. for this Kadiwa as this also helps MSMEs promote their products and reach wider markets,” Secretary Pascual added.

Golf Ridge Private Estate Marks First Pouring Milestone

GOLF RIDGE ESTATE

Central Luzon is shaping up to be the next best destination for people searching for a peaceful, unhurried lifestyle, surrounded by the beauty of nature, and the convenience of urban living, thanks to new developments like the Golf Ridge Private Estate by luxury real estate brand Filigree.

Soon to rise within the thriving Filinvest Mimosa+ in Clark, Pampanga, Golf Ridge Private Estate is the most premium residential golf community in Central Luzon that recently celebrated its first pouring milestone shortly after its groundbreaking last October 2022.

“Following the successful project developments of Filigree in Filinvest City in Alabang, we’re very thrilled to expand our portfolio to bring our exacting and masterful approach to planning and design in Clark,” said Filigree head Daphne Sanchez.

Filigree’s first luxury condominium outside of Metro Manila is designed to target the varying tastes and needs of the discerning few. For one, investors who are looking for a valuable real estate investment can find that Golf Ridge Private Estate is a winning proposition, foremost because of its main feature: The picturesque view of the neighboring 128-hectare Mimosa Plus Golf Course, hailed as the Philippines’ Best Golf Course for the year 2022 by the World Golf Awards.

According to David Faulkner, managing director for Valuation and Advisory Services at Colliers Asia, golf courses generally boost property prices. “Residential communities with golf courses are popular in the Philippines,” he said. This can be seen in Golf Ridge whose value appreciation already reached 45.44% since its 2019 launch.

Golf Ridge Private Estate

This is further strengthened by the property’s unparalleled design and amenities helmed by renowned architectural firm Leandro V. Locsin Partners with Andy Locsin at the helm. Golf Ridge highlights its country club-like features and amenities to help residents rejuvenate and enhance their health and well-being right at their doorstep. Residents can relax and unwind amid a slew of well-curated facilities including a fully-equipped Fitness Center, infinity pool, landscaped gardens, and outdoor lounge.

Golf Ridge also offers generous living spaces where each unit has an amply-sized balcony that gives a commanding, borrowed view of the Mimosa Plus Golf Course. Designed to cater to people of varying lifestyles, Golf Ridge offers one-bedroom units, two-bedroom units, and three-bedroom units.

On top of these appealing features, Golf Ridge also enjoys the benefits of being strategically located in Clark, Pampanga. Life essentials are within reach of the property, including leisure sites, medical hubs, and reputable learning sites. Not only that, the city is currently displaying rapid economic growth because of the implementation of infrastructure projects including railways, expressways, transportation, and airports. Colliers predicts that these big-ticket projects will boost residential demand in Pampanga, and will be supported by the continuous developments of integrated townships like the Filinvest Mimosa+.

Apart from that, many international businesses are already choosing Pampanga as the preferred location to grow their businesses. There’s the Dito Community in Clark Global City, while Singaporean firms are also keen on investing in the Filinvest Innovation Park in New Clark City. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is also currently pitching North Luzon as a manufacturing and logistics hub, further highlighting growth opportunities within the area.

At Filinvest Mimosa+, end-users and investors planning to relocate outside the congested urban areas will enjoy the live-work-play environment of the development. The majority of the property is made up of sprawling open spaces where mature trees and well-maintained green landscapes soften the glass and concrete buildings that are home to corporate offices, restaurants, malls, golf, and gaming establishments.

With model units soon ready to be viewable, future residents of Golf Ridge Private Estate can visit the property, which is easily accessible with only a comfortable two-hour drive to and from Metro Manila via major highways such as the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx), Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx), Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEx), and the newly developed Skyway Stage 3. It is only a 10-minute drive to Clark International Airport.

Beat Holiday Stress with RedDoorz 499 Promo

The holiday fever is on! Mall sales, Christmas tiangges and bazaars are up and Chtistmas shopping is on everyone’s mind.

It’s easy to get stressed even just by thinking of how to navigate through the hustle and bustle of the days ahead, how to survive the horrendous traffic and get all one’s Christmas errands done.

RedDoorz, the Philippines’ No. 1 affordable hotel chain and Southeast Asia’s largest, fastest-growing, technology-driven hotel management company, may just have a good solution. For the month of October, RedDoorz is offering rooms at Php 499 for overnight stay at selected RedDoorz hotels nationwide.

This means..

1. You can rent a room to serve as “battle station” while you shop till you drop.

Shopping and walking with all those bags and packages in your arms can be really uncomfortable, plus the chances of you dropping or missing a package or two increases with each new purchase. You wish you could have a place to leave your bags so you can free your hands and do more “battles” at store counters and tiangge queues.

Why not check into a nearby RedDoorz hotel with a 499 Promo? You can deposit all your stuff while you go out and “shop pa more”, maybe even grab a bite or drink in between. You can rest assured that all your belongings will be safe. You can even grab some snooze time if you want.

2. You can beat the traffic with an overnight stay at an affordable but clean and comfy hotel.

The MMDA says traffic is going to get even worse, thanks to Holiday mall sales, night markets and tiangges. A lot of people decide to let the traffic subside by staying at restos or roaming around malls a little bit longer. Only to find out that a thousand other mall-goers are thinking the same thing. The result? You all get caught in the jam, and the traffic is still heavy even up to midnight.

Bypass the stress and the traffic. Check your RedDoorz app and look for the nearest RedDoorz hotel. Book a room and let the thought of the traffic melt away as you enjoy a warm shower, savor the clean sheets and treat yourself – yes, the family too! -- to a relaxing overnight stay. At very affordable rates.

3. You can cook up a quick, low-budget Barkada Party and save big bucks.

It’s hard to find a get-together place this time of year. Restaurants are fully booked, bars are crowded and event places are too expensive. Instead of looking for a costly place and spending lots of money on food and beverages, why not hold your cozy Christmas party at a nearby RedDoorz? You’ll get a different vibe, lots of time to chill, and while you’re on a low budget theme, you can ditch the fancy foods and just party on chips, finger foods, and drinks.

4. You can have a happy, cost efficient Holidays.

So for the Christmas season, don’t be afraid to pursue your dream holiday staycation. Celebrate Paskong Pilipino with family and friends anytime, anywhere in the Philippines. RedDoorz’s affordable hotel rates – even those not included in the 499 Promo -- lets you experience and enjoy travel as much as you want, near or far. RedDoorz now has 200 partner hotels all over the Philippines from way up north in Baguio, to Pampanga, Metro Manila, Tagaytay and Palawan all the way down south to Cebu, Iloilo, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Tacloban, Bohol, Davao, Cagayan De Oro and Boracay. Your best Christmas celebration yet could be just a RedDoorz away.

Download the RedDoorz app on Google Play Store and App Store to find your perfect location this Holiday season.
