Among its key wins, BPI Capital was named “Best Equity Adviser” in the Philippines and was recognized for several landmark transactions that are shaping the country’s capital markets.

BPI Capital, as Joint Global Coordinator and Joint Bookrunner, played a key role in Maynilad Water Services, Inc.’s Php 34.3 billion initial public offering (IPO), which was named “Best IPO”. It was the only Philippine bank in this role for what became the country’s second-largest IPO and the first with a Green Equity Label, drawing strong institutional and retail demand despite challenging market conditions.

The firm also led Cebu Landmasters, Inc.’s sustainability-linked issuances as Sole Issue Manager, and Sole Arranger and Bookrunner for the follow-on notes. Recognized as “Best ASEAN Sustainability-Linked Bond”, this marked the Philippines’ first sustainability-linked instruments tied to a social goal. For Ayala Land, Inc., BPI Capital acted as Lead Underwriter and Bookrunner for its Php 15 billion Sustainability-Linked Bond, which was awarded “Best Sustainability-Linked Bond”. The transaction links financing to environmental targets such as emissions reduction and green building standards.

Cotabato City’s Ongoing Push for Cashless Payments via GCash Simplifies Tax, Fee Payments

Paying government fees in Cotabato City has become faster, safer, and more convenient as the local government unit (LGU) officially rolled out cashless payment options with GCash, the Philippines’ leading finance superapp and largest cashless ecosystem.

Since the partnership launch in May 2024, the initiative has introduced Scan to Pay and Bills Pay features that allow citizens to settle local taxes and fees directly from their mobile phones using the GCash app. This effort eliminates long lines at city offices and reduces the risks that come with manual cash transactions.

The move addresses long-standing challenges in an LGU’s collection system: prolonged queues, cash-handling inefficiencies, limited payment channels, and the lack of digital infrastructure. These issues have affected operations, LGU employees, and constituents.

Through the Scan to Pay feature, users can simply scan a QR code displayed in city offices to pay instantly. The Bills Pay feature, on the other hand, allows them to settle fees remotely anytime, removing the need to line up in person. Together, these features offer flexibility and accessibility for Cotabateños, while helping the local government reduce congestion and improve transparency in its financial processes.

The cashless system also enhances safety by minimizing physical cash handling and potential errors in manual recording. This ensures more accurate reconciliation and efficient fund management.

“The integration of GCash in Cotabato City is a testament to the powerful impact of digital transformation on local governance. By replacing cash with a secure, efficient, and transparent payment system, we are actively supporting the city in streamlining its administrative services and fostering a better experience for every constituent,” said Cleo Santos, Vice President and Head for Public Sector at GCash.

The partnership between Cotabato City and GCash forms part of a broader effort to digitize government payments in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), reinforcing the region’s ongoing digital transformation. In his State of the City Address, Mayor Bruce Matabalao said, “Over 1,200 market vendors and tricycle operators are now enrolled in PalengQR Ph Plus, and daily transactions have increased by 30 percent within the first year of implementation—reflecting strong local acceptance of cashless commerce.”

The program holds strong relevance for BARMM as the region continues to strengthen its economic foundations and expand its digital capacity amid ongoing development efforts. In Cotabato City, one of BARMM’s primary urban hubs, the initiative plays a key role in advancing financial inclusion by enabling residents to more conveniently and securely access essential services and government assistance through digital platforms.

By embracing this cashless ecosystem, Cotabato City is addressing operational bottlenecks commonly faced by LGUs while taking a crucial step toward inclusive digital adoption—empowering citizens to transact securely and confidently using technology they already have in their hands.

This collaboration reflects the growing role of digital finance in improving local governance, with GCash continuing to support local government units nationwide in building more efficient, transparent, and citizen-friendly systems.

Security Bank Teams Up with Toyota Auto Auction to Offer Better Access to Quality Pre-Owned Vehicles

Makati City, Philippines — Security Bank Corporation (PSE:SECB) has partnered with Toyota Auto Auction (TAA), the auction services business of Toyota Tsusho Philippines, to optimize the sale of the Bank’s repossessed vehicles through a professional and transparent auction platform.

The partnership is designed to improve price discovery, accelerate turnaround times, and deliver a better experience for both sellers and buyers of pre-owned vehicles.

Under the agreement, TAA will serve as one of the bank’s remarketing partners for repossessed vehicle units. By applying standardized inspection processes, digital data, and established auction best practices, the collaboration aims to maximize recoveries while ensuring fair, market-based pricing for buyers.

“At Security Bank, we are focused on doing things properly—clear processes, fair outcomes, and solutions that create real value,” said Hirofumi Umeno, EVP and Alliance Segment Head, Security Bank. “By combining our stable supply of repossessed units with Toyota Auto Auction’s strong valuation capabilities, we’ll help establish a fair marketplace and ease access to secondhand cars for buyers.”

“TAA started with the goal of running fair auctions and handling ROPA remarketing, which is outside the core business of banks,” said Yoshihiro Goto, FVP Toyota Motors Philippines and GM Toyota Auto Auction.

Beyond repossessed vehicle remarketing, both parties see potential to broaden collaboration over time, including opportunities that support wider engagement across the Toyota ecosystem and the Bank’s corporate and commercial banking businesses.

Makati City, Philippines — Security Bank Corporation, together with Bank of Ayudhya Public Company Limited (Krungsri), MUFG Bank Ltd., MUFG Innovation Partners Co., Ltd. (MUIP), Krungsri Finnovate Company Limited (KFIN), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen inbound and outbound startup collaboration and advance innovation across the region.
“At Security Bank, this commitment reflects our BetterBanking promise—to create value, deliver meaningful experiences, and open doors for businesses to thrive,” said Hirofumi Umeno, Director, Executive Vice President and Alliance Segment Head. “Our shared goal is to turn collaboration into real outcomes that strengthen industries and fuel long-term growth across the Asia and globally.”
The partnership brings together each organization’s strengths—Security Bank’s deep ties with Philippine corporates, MUFG’s extensive corporate network in Japan, the Philippines and across the region, Krungsri’s presence in Thailand, experience in regional business‑matching platforms, MUIP and KFIN’s reach across regional and global startup ecosystems, and DTI’s mandate to promote Philippine startup growth and international participation.
“This collaboration advances Startup Pilipinas, the Innovative Startup Act, and the Tatak Pinoy Strategy as we build an innovation‑driven economy that empowers MSMEs and boosts global competitiveness,” said Assistant Secretary Nylah Rizza D. Bautista. “We will support market access, startup exchanges, accelerator programs, and business matching while strengthening our AI and Startup Center as a regional innovation hub.”

Driving cross-border business matching

Under the MOU, the partners will collaborate to promote startups internationally, support exchange programs and trade missions, and participate in DTI-led innovation events. Philippine corporates and startups will also be invited to join Krungsri’s annual Japan-ASEAN Startup Business Matching Fair in Bangkok in June—an established regional platform focused on driving synergy between startups and large corporates.
"Krungsri Bank has been playing an important role on encouraging ASEAN regional expansion. We have launched ‘Krungsri ASEAN LINK’, a business advisory service that facilitates our customer’s expansion into ASEAN markets," said Bunsei Okubo, First Executive Vice President and Head of Japanese Corporate Banking, Bank of Ayudhya PCL. "We will be hosting the Japan-ASEAN Startup Business Matching Fair again for the 4th year. The event will create opportunities for Filipino Startups to connect with leading corporates from over 10 countries."
“Backed by MUFG’s ASEAN network and USD20 billion investment commitment, this collaboration advances innovation and strengthens the Philippines’ role in the regional startup ecosystem. We remain optimistic about the long-term potential of the Philippines and Thailand as we continue connecting both to global capital, talent, and technology,” said Masami Yoshitake, Managing Director, Country Head-Philippines at MUFG Bank.
“This MOU with DTI and our partners marks a key step in our regional strategy, advancing investment readiness, two‑way market expansion, and deep‑tier knowledge exchange to accelerate the growth of Philippine and regional startups,” said Palida Artispong, Acting Managing Director at Krungsri Finnovate.
The collaboration will also help map Philippine startup activity, identify opportunities for partnership with corporates, and support innovation in high-growth sectors.
“With the Philippines’ young, digital-native population, English as an official language, and strong global connections, this market is well-positioned to contribute significantly to digital transformation in the region. We believe these strengths will enable startups here to scale internationally and create impactful solutions for the future,” said Atsushi Ishihara, Deputy CEO of MUFG Innovation Partners.
“This partnership creates real value by connecting startups with corporates for pilots, partnerships, and investments—helping ideas scale and businesses stay competitive,” John Cary Ong, Executive Vice President and Wholesale Banking Segment Head at Security Bank added. “The MOU provides a practical framework for cross‑border exposure, trade missions, and structured business matching, while upholding good governance and institutional independence.”
